Design guidelines for therapeutic gardens serving cancer patientsChalfant, Cheryl Lynn January 2002 (has links)
A growing body of research suggests that certain environmental conditions may positively contribute to the healing process. Consequently, the medical and design professions are now exploring how the medical environment - both indoors and out - can better support the health and well being of its patients and their caregivers. Landscape architects and environmental psychologists are contributing to the growing interest in healing environments by exploring the relationship between nature, therapeutic gardens, and patient healing. One result of this interest has been the formulation of design recommendations for therapeutic gardens serving specific populations such as those with Alzheimer's Disease, AIDS or psychiatric illnesses. However, little attention has been given to therapeutic gardens designed to meet the needs of cancer patients even though a number of such gardens already exist. The purpose of this project is to identify design guidelines for therapeutic gardens that support the health and well being of cancer patients and to use these guidelines to design a model garden. The research for this project focused on two areas. First, literature review and interviews with employees of Ball Memorial Hospital were used to establish a base knowledge of cancer, including the emotional, physical and psychological characteristics associated with it. Next, characteristics of healing environments for cancer patients were determined through literature review, review of case studies and interviews with Ball Memorial Hospital employees. Based upon this research, design guidelines were established for therapeutic gardens serving cancer patients and applied in a design for Ball Memorial Hospital's soon to be completed CancerCenter. / Department of Landscape Architecture

The process of urbanization of Brazilian cities has recently followed a horizontal expansion model, with the construction of new districts far from urban centers, and with housing construction on the outskirts of the cities. Among the problems originating from this, one should emphasize the occupation of increasingly larger areas, the environmental problems, the occupation of protected areas and risk areas, the social problems, the gentrification, the land speculation, the distancing from workplaces, the lack of adequate infrastructure and the problems with slums or substandard housing and poor quality housing. In response, architects and city planners have been pointing out for decades the necessity of "returning to the center", assigning to housing, among other solutions, the potentiality for improvement of dense and consolidated central areas. Despite extensive research on the topic, at present, there still are lacunas in the bibliography, mainly regarding the critical analysis on recent practices and on the formulation of new theories. Thus, the objective of this research is to analyze the methodological, theoretical and project possibilities in contemporary architecture and city planning for social housing projects in consolidated urban centers. With this purpose, projects of social housing in the central area of the city of São Paulo were analyzed, and documents about the topic of social housing in Brazil were collected and organized. All this was done in an effort to contribute to the process of elaboration of new projects for housing programs and to contribute towards filling the lacuna that exists in the bibliography. In addition, these Brazilian projects were contrasted to Spanish projects of a similar nature, elaborated in central areas of Madrid, in the beginning of the 21st century; the analysis and comparison of the theoretical, technical and methodological basis of both sets of projects were made. The case studies reveal good project solutions concerned with the urban context and the quality of the results. In this manner, this research aims at contributing to the discussion on housing production in the country, in contrast to the reality in Spain / Mestrado / Arquitetura, Tecnologia e Cidade / Mestra em Arquitetura, Tecnologia e Cidade

Placemaking : a city plaza in downtown Muncie that celebrates its heritageCui, Jing January 2001 (has links)
There is a phenomenon of placelessness. Cities have look-alike landscapes. This sameness leads to a lack of significant places and a loss of sense of place. In addition to that, with the suburban sprawl and downtown deterioration, there is an increasing need for downtown revitalization. Cities call for vibrant and pleasant places with characters. In a world where most cities are getting more similar with each other and where people can't tell whom they are and where they come from, placemaking actions should be welcomed. Placemaking respects the genius of the place and finds links between traditions and our present experience of life. This thesis presents an overview of placemaking including its definition, history, categories, functions, principles and actions. Its purpose is to apply placemaking into the design of a city plaza in downtown Muncie to make a place that links people to history, to culture, and to other people. By doing that, this creative project tries to illustrate that placemaking is a valuable strategy in urban regeneration. / Department of Landscape Architecture

Arquitetura de bibliotecas universitárias: diretrizes de projeto para edifícios mais sustentáveis / Architecture of university libraries: project guidelines for more sustainable buildingsSgoda, Cleverson 28 April 2016 (has links)
The concept of sustainable development has been widely discussed in many sectors of society, aiming an integrated and comprehensive vision of improvements and solutions for the growing environmental, social and economic problems. As a result, professionals, working with projects in higher education institutions, have been discussing the inclusion of practices that minimize the impact caused by the construction of their own libraries, especially when it is necessary to establish a connection between the edification, the occupant health and the quality of performed activities. In this regard, the environmental assessment systems have been widespread in Brazil and through those we seek to raise awareness related to the environmental impact made by the buildings during the stages of planning, construction and operation. However, what incorporate as practices aimed at sustainability in university libraries Projects? To answer this, it was made a literature review to find the concepts inherent to the university libraries theme, as well as was analyzed projects within the area in question with greater sustainability features. Also, the current sustainability criteria presented in the evaluation systems were analyzed, among which were detailed LEED, AQUA-HQE and PBE-Edifica. Through this analysis we identified the parameters used in a way to assist in a proposition of sustainability guidelines and using a survey applied to the library users of the Universidade Tecnológica Federal do Paraná (UTFPR), we sought a deepening of the issues that imply the quality of these spaces by checking the incorporation of sustainability criteria as well as the variables that are part of the project process. Ultimately, through the ideas presented throughout the work, along with the study of conditions, we came to the proposition of guidelines for incorporating sustainability concepts in planning and architecture projects of university libraries.
