People today are less physically active than ever before, thus health related issues and overweight has risen to record levels. People also use more IT than before; it can be argued that IT is one of the main factors people’s activity levels have dropped. Au contraire IT has found its way into most people’s training routines and the amount of IT-artefacts aimed at exercise has exploded. However, most research studying IT and exercise, only studies single artefacts. Though, current research shows that it is impossible to view an artefacts impact as single artefact, it must instead be looked up on as part of an information ecology of interconnected artefacts. Thus, this study aims to find out: How does IT interconnect in artefact ecologies to motivate to exercise? The findings of this study suggests that in order to understand how IT motivate to exercise it should be looked upon as a dynamic ecosystem of artefacts. And that the artefacts should be analysed from its function, rather than as individual artefacts. It also shows that functions are not always linked to a single artefact and can span over several different artefacts, and that an artefact function is not static over time. It shows that, we need to be aware that different sports require different functionality, and even form should be viewed as a function. It also shows that functions for collecting quantitative data and social interacting have a place in most people's artefact ecologies. However, this may not occur in designated training applications, but instead in any of the artefacts people uses. Therefore, is an awareness also required that people’s motivation to exercise does not have to come out of training artefacts, but it can spring out of all the artefacts people uses.
