Comparison of refractivity profiles derived by Radiosonde soundings and GNSS tomography

Brecht, A., Raabe, A., Bender, M. 28 September 2017 (has links)
By tomography of GNSS slant delay data the refractivity fields of the atmosphere can be reconstructed. The resolution of the tomography field is about 40 km in horizontal and several 100 m in vertical direction. In 2009 about 270 GNSS stations were available in Germany. The tomographically reconstructed humidity fields have to be validated with other observation methods which are able to detect the refractivity profiles of the atmosphere. The data used to compare is from radiosonde soundings, by which the refractivity can be calculated. The first results of the comparison of GNSS data with radiosonde data from two radiosonde stations in Germany are shown.

Long-period (2-18 Days) oscillations of mesopause winds at Collm

Jacobi, Christoph, Schminder, Rudolf, Kürschner, Dierk 03 November 2016 (has links) (PDF)
Daily analyses of the zonal and meridional prevailing wind at the mesopause ( - 95 km height) are investigated with respect to planetary wave scale oscillations with periods ranging between 2 and 18 days. A mean climatology of the years 1983 - 1994 is presented. Time series of planetary wave activity show a significant increase during this period, which is in accordance with results from literature.

D1 LF wind measurements in autumn and early winter 1994 at Collm, Germany

Jacobi, Christoph, Schminder, Rudolf, Kürschner, Dierk 03 November 2016 (has links) (PDF)
Results of total reflection mesopause wind measurements, carried out at the Collm Observatory of the University of Leipzig in 1994 are presented with special regard to the CRISTA period in November 1994. Height-time cross-sections of the prevailing wind and the semidiumal tidal amplitude and phase show the variation of these parameters during the course of the year. In autumn and early winter oscillations of the prevailing wind with a period of about 2 - 3 weeks are found. They are partly due to an overshooting of the parameters while the circulation adjusts to its winter conditions. A comparison of the zonal prevailing wind in 1994 with the values measured since 1982 shows a solar cycle dependence.

Radiative transfer modelling in inhomogeneous clouds by means of the Monte Carlo Method

Gimeno García, Sebastián, Trautmann, Thomas 10 January 2017 (has links) (PDF)
The Monte Carlo (MC) method is an effective approach to simulate the radiative transfer in an inhomogeneous cloudy atmosphere. It is based on the direct physical simulation of the extinction processes that solar and thermal photons incur when traveling through the atmosphere. A detailed description of the MC method is presented in the second chapter. A new three-dimensional Monte Carlo radiative transfer model, based on a pre-existing model (Trautmann et al. [1999]), has been developed. Some outstanding characteristics of this model are discussed in chapter 3. Several simulations of reflectances, transmittances, absorptances and horizontal flux densities have been performed, the results of which have been compared with worldwide accepted codes (chapter 4). The two cases selected for the radiative transfer computations were taken from the Intercomparison of 3D Radiative Codes (I3RC) project: an ARM (Atmospheric Radiation Measurements) reconstructed cloud and a 3D marine boundary layer cloud / Die Monte Carlo (MC) Methode ist ein effektives Verfahren, um den Strahlungstransport in einer inhomogenen bewölkten Atmosphäre zu simulieren.

Sensitivity studies with a surface and channel runoff module coupled to a mesoscale atmospheric model

Mölders, Nicole, Rühaak, Wolfram 06 December 2016 (has links) (PDF)
A module to investigate ground water recharge was developed, and implemented into the mesoscale meteorological model GESIMA (Geesthacht’s simulation model of the atmosphere) as well as coupled to a soil-vegetation scheme. Important features of the ground water module are the determination of surface and channel runoff. A comparison of the results provided by GESIMA with and without consideration of surface and channel runoff shows a remarkable impact of surface runoff on the soil moisture fluxes. Substituting water meadows by willow-forests demonstrates their importance for soil moisture fluxes.

The influence of NCEP-data assimilated into COMMA-LIM on the 16-day wave

Fröhlich, Kristina, Pogoreltsev, Alexander I., Jacobi, Christoph, Nechaeva, L. A. 04 April 2017 (has links) (PDF)
The general circulation model COMMA-LIM solves the primitive equations on a sphere using gridpoints. The relative large interval between adjacent gridpoints (5° × 5.6° latitude versus longitude) causes an incorrect meridional temperature gradient in the coarsly resolved troposphere that leads to too weak winds there, particularly in the lower winter stratosphere above the polar region. By using the technique of nudging 11-year averaged NCEP zonal mean temperature data were assimilated into COMMA-LIM. This means that longitudinal dependent processes as calculated by the model still influence the atmosphere. The nudging method has improved not only the lower atmosphere, but also the middle atmospheric jets show a more realistic behaviour. A numerical experiment by forcing the 16-day wave was carried out in order to investigate the influence of an improved background circulation on the vertical propagation of planetary waves.

Analysis of planetary waves seen in ionospheric total electron content (TEC) perturbations

Hoffmann, Peter, Jacobi, Christoph 22 March 2017 (has links) (PDF)
The DLR Neustrelitz regularly produces maps of the total total electron content (TEC) on a global scale using the navigation satellite systems GPS and GLONASS to forecast space weather. In this study we turn our attention to the higher middle latitudes TEC variations during September to November 2004 in a long-period range of several days with a zonal wavenumber up to 5. The results are compared with a planetary wave analysis using assimilated stratospheric data, mesosphere/lower thermosphere radar temperature data at Collm observatory (51.3◦N, 13.0◦E) and the ionosonde observed critical plasma frequency of the F2-layer (f0F2) at Juliusruh (54.6◦N, 13.4◦E) to investigate the meteorological influences on ionospheric variability.

Bestimmung von Ozonabbauraten über der Arktis und Antarktis mittels Ozonsonden- und Satellitendaten / Determination of ozone loss rates over the Arctic and Antarctic using ozone sonde and satellite data

Streibel, Martin Albert Gerhard January 2005 (has links)

The subject of this thesis is the destruction of ozone in the stratospheric polar vortex of the Arctic and Antarctic. It is caused by decomposition products of anthropogenic emitted Chlorofluorocarbons and Halons, radicals of chlorine and bromine. Studies which are dealing with the comparison of measured and modelled ozone loss show that the processes are known but that the quantitative development is not fully understood yet.

The processes that lead to ozone destruction are similar in both polar vortices. But as a consequence of different meteorological conditions the chemical ozone loss in the arctic polar vortex is less dramatic than over the Antarctic. On average the Arctic polar vortex is stronger perturbed and exhibit a stronger annual variability. In order to distinguish between chemical ozone loss and the dynamical redistribution of ozone in the Arctic vortex the Match method was developed. Air parcels in the polar vortex are probed several times in order to quantify the chemical change in ozone. To identify those air parcels trajectories are calculated using wind fields. When it is possible to connect two measurements by a trajectory within certain quality criteria the difference in ozone can be calculated and is interpreted as chemical ozone loss. Such a coincidence is called a Match. The Match method is a statistical approach which needs many of those doubly probed air parcels in order to draw significant conclusions about the destruction of ozone. So the ozone destruction can be calculated for a certain period in time which gives ozone loss rates. In order to enhance the number of doubly probed air masses an active coordination was established.

Within the scope of the thesis Match campaigns were performed during the Arctic winter 2002/2003 and for the first time during the Antarctic winter 2003. The achieved data was used in order to determine ozone loss rates in both polar vortices. The loss rates serve for the evaluation of numerical models but allow as well the direct comparison of ozone loss rates of both polar vortices.

The beginning of the winter 2002/2003 is characterized by very low temperatures in the middle and lower stratosphere. Hence, the Match campaign started at the end of November. From January on the polar vortex was strongly dynamically disturbed at certain times. For the height region of 400 to 500 K potential temperature (15-23 km) ozone loss rates and the column loss were determined. The robustness of the ozone loss rates was checked with a variety of different tests.

From beginning of the winter until October 2003 the Antarctic polar vortex was very cold and the expansion of the ozone hole area reached record values in late September. From the beginning of June until the beginning of October ozone loss has been calculated in a height region from 400 to 550 K potential temperature. The development of the ozone loss was almost identical on the different height levels. The increase in sunlight led to an increase in ozone loss rates. From mid September the ozone loss rates decreased rapidly and the ozone was completely destroyed between approx. 14 and 21 km.

In the last part of the thesis a new algorithm is presented which is based on a multivariate regression in order to calculate ozone loss rates from ozone profiles made by different sensors. At the same time the systematic error between different sensors has to be considered. As an example the approach is shown for the Antarctic Winter 2003 on the 475 K potential temperature level. Beside the ozone profiles from the sondes, data from two satellites experiments have been used. The agreement between the ozone loss rates calculated by the multivariate regression method and those calculated by the single match approach is very good.

Das Materielle im Sozialen

Neubert, Christine 25 January 2013 (has links) (PDF)
Architektur umgibt uns permanent.

Mellentin, Udo 18 February 2010 (has links) (PDF)
Statistical analysis of meteorological time series provides proof of changes in temperature and precipitation in Saxony, Germany. To be able to estimate the further development, regional climate model simulations (RCMs) can be applied. This paper investigates the methods of global and regional climate modelling. Seasonal trends in observed and simulated climate change signals for the 20th and 21st century are presented for the area of the federal state of Saxony. Given the differing climate projections produced by the individual models, climate change scenarios and climate impact studies should be based on an ensemble of model output data from different RCMs, which will then enable more comprehensive evaluation of their uncertainties.
