A questionnaire related to environmental awareness was administered to 244 students enrolled in NR 101, Introduction to Natural Resources, during the Spring Quarter of 1979 in an attempt to answer the following questions: (1) To what extent will viewing a slide-tape presentation alter student responses on a questionnaire? (2) To what extent will the responses of the students viewing a slide-tape presentation differ from a control treatments result in significant differences in responses when compared to a control group?Results of this research indicate the treatments did alter the students' responses on one factor. The purpose of this study was to make an investigation of the use of motion pictures and film strips in the coaching of athletics in a selected group of high schools in Texas. It was proposed, also, to formulate conclusions as to the practices utilized in connection with these visual aids in the coaching technique and to make recommendations for their use by coaches as outgrowths of the study.

The purpose of this study is to determine the types of audio-visual aids that are being used in the junior high schools of Texas, the extent of their use, the evaluation by teachers in service of various audio-visual aids, the needs recognized by the teachers in service for additional audio-visual aids in the respective schools, and the needs of teachers in service for aid and instructions in the use of such aids. It is hoped that, with this information and additional information from professional literature, conclusions can be drawn and recommendations made that will aid teachers in the Texas junior high schools to use available audio-visual aids to a much greater advantage than is now being evidenced.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of on-screen video instructor gender and expressivity upon the competency based performance of adults in the learning of basic computer skills from a series of locally produced instructional videotapes. These tapes were typical of the type of instructional videos used by corporations, government, and schools to train adults. A 2 x 3 factorial design was used to analyze the variables effects on learning. The independent variables were instructor gender and instructor expressivity. Mediating variables were student gender, ethnicity (as measured by first language), reading level, and attitude towards computers. The dependent variable was student learning as measured by a 20 question multiple choice exam. The subjects (n=120) used in the study were under employed or unemployed adults. Sixty-nine percent were considered to be limited speakers of English. Six videotapes were produced. These tapes were identical in every way except that in three tapes a male actor taught in respectively low, average, and high expressive manners. In each of the other three tapes a female acted in a low, average and high expressive manners. Each subject viewed one of the tapes, in groups of eight to ten students, and was immediately tested on the material presented in their tape. Students were also asked to rate the instructor they saw on a five item scale of expressivity. The findings showed no significant main effects for either on-screen instructor gender or expressivity. A significant interaction was found between on-screen instructor gender and expressivity, as measured by the students. Students viewing the low expressive male and the high expressive female scored higher on the exam than students viewing either the high expressive male or the low expressive female. Performance on the test was correlated with student reading level, computer experience, the time it took to take the exam, and student ethnicity (as measured by first language spoken). Additionally, a significant interaction was found between student gender and instructor gender. Students viewing instructors of the opposite gender scored higher than those viewing instructors of the same gender. The implications of this study suggest that subject matter and student population be considered in both the design of instructional television programs and in the casting and the directing of talent for these programs. / Ed. The purpose of this project was to design, create, and implement a pilot for an adapted physical education (APE), DVD-Video teaching aid. This creative project has resulted in a DVD-Video that can be used as an instructional tool and resource for physical educators. It follows the teaching methods and skills from the wheelchair basketball chapter in Davis (2002), featuring strategies and ideas that can aid in the successful teaching of physical education (basketball) to individuals of all abilities.The use of interactive DVD-Video in a learning environment is seen as an innovative and exciting delivery method for instructional purposes. It is proposed that the majority of learners would enjoy using, and acquire a very significant learning experience from using, interactive DVD-Video instruction. Therefore, it is anticipated that physical educators would get a meaningful APE training experience from an interactive instructional DVD-Video such as the one piloted for this creative project. / School of Physical Education, Sport, and Exercise Science

This qualitative research aims to present students' beliefs about the role that culture plays in language learning and to understand their responses towards the use of authentic multi-media materials. Based on the results of the study, this dissertation describes the impact that authentic multi-media materials had on students' cultural knowledge and their overall language learning experience. The implications discussed in this study are based on students' responses and are relevant to foreign language instructors who are interested in the areas of culture teaching, authentic multi-media materials, students' perspectives, and autonomous learning. In particular, the dissertation presents a link between authentic multi-media materials and motivation based on Ryan and Deci's Self-Determination Theory (2000). The results found in this study suggest that authentic multi-media materials are resources that could be utilized in the early stages of instruction in order to capitalize on students' inherent interest in the Italian culture, which in turn serves to motivate students to persist in their language study. / text

M.Ed. (Subject Didactics) / It is important that allowances be made for the Mathematics gifted pupil, who is seen as the problem solver of the future. Mathematics gifted pupils, on the average, use half their time to work thoroughly through the average syllabus and achieve 90% plus. The average subject teacher does not always have the necessary time for the gifted pupil. He is thus left to his own devices. The lack of facilities, sufficient qualified teachers, support from like-minded people, stimulating opportunities, resource centres and other stimulating factors add further to the pupils' frustrations. Enrichment of syllabi is seen as one of the most prominent provisional possibilities for the gifted child. The reason for this is found in the fact that the gifted child does not constitute even 5% of the population. They are kept mainly in the mainstream and are in no way identified as a group for any type of special educational need, like acceleration. Enrichment by means of educational computer programmes does not need individual teaching or a faster pace, but an adjustment in the activities within the classroom. This study investigated the effects of a home-based, audio cassette marriage enrichment course on marital communication and marital adjustment. The marriage enrichment course evaluated in this study consisted of two audio cassette tapes, each containing two sessions of approximately 45 minutes in length, and one work booklet. The course contained exercises emphasizing the development of communication skills, encouragement of self-disclosure, learning of empathy skills, and the setting of personal and mutual goals. The unique aspects of the course were the home-based setting in which the couples completed the program, and the self-enclosed audio cassette nature of the course.

M.Ed. / The subject English is compulsory in the researcher's students' field of study. The researcher offers the subject English for the National Teacher's Diploma Technical and the National Higher Diploma : Post-School Education. The students come from many different cultural backgrounds and for many of them English is a second or third language. The researcher has observed that there are social affects with which students have to contend, and has detected a definite need amongst students for more certainty pertaining to communication in distance education. The researcher has also perceived definite distinguishing features amongst cultural groups in her subject field English. A definite need arose to examine problems experienced by students studying through teletuition, such as trying to interact with a distant institution, problems concerning the study of English as second or third language and social effects experienced by students in distance education. After having done theoretical research, the researcher included an empirical questionnaire survey in which she attempted to gain biographical and other background information. Respondents were asked questions which concentrated on methods by which they had learned English, whether they experience an intrusion of their home language on English language performance and whether culture impinges on the acquisition of English. The research also attempted to determine whether students experience demotivation, fear of failure and situational problems, amongst others. In the light of the literature study, the questionnaire survey and interviews, the findings summarily were that students * have a need for more contact with their lecturers * revealed a need for emotional support from relatives and lecturers * are demotivated by the negative tone of comments on assignments * experience situational problems * experience fear of failure * experience an intrusion of their home language on English language performance * experience a cultural intrusion in the study of English * experience too many cross - cul,tural contrasts which have an effect on the understanding of English. If the educator in a distance education institution is aware of the students' needs and problems, it would result in a greater understanding of this didactic responsibility in helping students realize their full potential.

For this project the brain-based theory of learning, an eclectic theory that incorporates the cognitive and humanistic views was researched. Multimedia, a technology which supports the principles of brain-based learning, was then selected as the vehicle to present historical materials to students.
