Tuning Up BIM for Safety Analysis

Taiebat, Mojtaba 25 January 2012 (has links)
The construction industry is on the top list of hazardous industries. This justifies the importance of safety research in this industry. Review of the literature identified "falls" as the top mortality source in the construction industry. Therefore, this research focuses on falls from heights. Conventional safety practices have held designers responsible for safety of the end-users, and considered constructors responsible for the safety of construction workers. Design for Safety — along with its similar ideas such as Safety in Design, Prevention through Design, etc. — is gaining attention with the emerging paradigm of Integrated Project Delivery which promotes collaboration between designers and constructors through the entire delivery process. With Design for Safety concepts, designers and constructors can work together to enhance construction workers' safety early in the design phase. The philosophy of Design for Safety is based on the idea that eliminating hazards early in the design phase rather than the construction phase is more effective. Szymberski's (1997) time-safety influence curve explains how construction workers' safety can be influenced in the different phases of construction. Szymberski depicts that the ability to influence safety diminishes as the phases from design to construction to operation progress. This research is inspired by the Design for Safety (DfS) concept. It aims at "design"ing and "engineer"ing safety during design as well as construction phases. BIM (Building Information Modeling) and parametric modeling are the tools that this research considers when designing its road for future developments. This research limits its scope to construction workers falls from heights. The research presents a framework for representing falls hazards for future implementation in a BIM modelin order to help the designers and constructors better study and analyze safety of construction workers. The research studied falls accidents recorded from past projectsand proposed rules and properties for hazard identification in a BIM / parametric model. These rules and properties were abstracted and presented in the form of flowcharts and validated by an expert panel. The flowchartswill guide software developers for incorporating hazard identification functions into parametric BIM environments in future research. / Ph. D.

Workflow from point cloud to BIM / Arbetsflöde från punktmoln till BIM

Kaliakouda, Alexandra January 2021 (has links)
The title of this thesis is 'Workflow from point cloud to BIM'. Thus, an attempt is made to present and analyse all the steps followed in such a process. The building used as a case study is U-Building which is located at KTH campus. Briefly, a report is made on the various methods of mapping existing buildings. Also, the principles of operation of 3D laser scanners are presented as well as an analysis of BIM technology. Furthermore, it is analysed the process of creating a 3D representation of the building in the form of a point cloud as well as the process of creating the 3D model with the help of two software packages.

Al-Naami, Zurya January 2018 (has links)
Several authorities and organization, for example, the Environmental Protection Agency, UN, and Stockholm city have pointed out the importance of promotion of innovations and diffusion to achieve a sustainable urban development. To promote the emergence, implementation and the diffusion of innovations which support sustainable urban development, this study focuses on identifying common success factors and challenges in sustainable urban development’s innovations processes. The examination is based on a case study of “the application of BIM in the reconstruction of Slussen”. To achieve the purpose of the study several different steps were taken, these are: experiences from Vinnova about common success factors and challenges in innovation projects were collected. A theoretical framework was chosen, Technical Innovation System (TIS), this framework was used to explore which factors are used to promote the emergence, implementation and the deployment of the innovations which supports a sustainable urban development. Eventually three comparisons were made, first, the success factors and the challenges identified from the case study were compared to the theoretical framework TIS, then they were compared to Vinnovas experiences, and the last comparison was made between Vinnovas experiences and the theoretical framework. The results showed that the most common success factors in an innovation are inter alia, an innovation should be needed, the existence of collaboration between the involved participants, to have a common vision for how the innovation should be established and that experiences should be learned from through experience-sharing. Many challenges were also identified, amongst them are, the lack of collaboration between participants, lack of interest in new technology and difficulties in the establishment of the innovation in the market. Many of the success factors which were identified in the case study and from experiences from Vinnova were confirmed in the theoretical framework TIS. To summarise, several recommendations were made by the author of the report for future work to promote innovations, one of these recommendations is to inform and educate participants about the innovation.

BIM: Revit-content : Modellering och hantering / BIM: Revit-content : Modeling and management

Ericson, Robert, Ruuti, Henriikka January 2012 (has links)
The introduction of the BIM-methodology in the building industry has awoken several questions regarding the reformation of work methods in the project planning process. One is the question about content; graphics and information inside a Building Information Model. The purpose of this report has been to analyze existing content managing strategies, in order to create recommendations for the forming of consequent work methods in Revit projects. The goal has been to adjust the recommendations for companies willing to further develop internal work methods in the field, particularly concerning the management of Revit content. Several interviews with representatives from different Revit projects at the architectural firm Tengbom in Stockholm were conducted. Four of the Revit projects, were chosen for a more detailed case study, in order to acquire information about the company’s strategies concerning content management. Simultaneously, a literary study was executed, through which information about existing content management strategies in other companies and organizations could be obtained and analyzed. The results of the case studies at Tengbom were compared with theories acquired from the existing strategies in content management. Benefits and disadvantages were analyzed, based on different aspects concerning modeling and management of Revit content and also the education of Revit use. The report concludes that Tengbom has applied the most sustainable strategies in the initial part of the company’s BIM implementation process. Several benefits were also found in the existing strategies, analyzed in the literary study. Together, the conclusions formed a solid base for further recommendations, made as a result of the study in this report.

Användningen av BIM under förvaltningsskedet - Utvecklingen av digitala ritningar/verktyg & hur det används idag / BIM During Management Phase- The development of digital drawings/tools & how it's used today

Ekefäll, Oscar, Oktay, Philip January 2018 (has links)
This bachelor thesis is about in what range BIM or other digital solutions are being used today during management phase and also map out curtain problem areas. Management phase has fallen back in the technical development if you compare them with other parts of the building process. There is still a lot of 2D-drawings being used during management phase.Interviews has been made with both managers and consultants. With these interviews and study of literature a mapping of the BIM-usage has been made. Witch has shown that the 3D-model that was made earlier in the building process was seldom used during management phase. In fact none of the companies that was interviewed was using the 3D-model. This is a huge problem because much of the information that was once made is lost. The reason for this is either that the managers doesn’t have competence enough to use the model or that the question isn’t prioritized because the managers can’t see any economic value in the model. If the management phase want to develop in the field of technology there has to be specific programs for managers available. There’s also a lot of older people working in the field of management and the computer skills are very different between the coworkers. This is bad from a BIM-perspective because the technical competence is lacking. Which can be explained because the management phase isn’t prioritized at the Universities.

Byggnadsinformationsmodelleringgenom byggprocessen / Building information modeling throughout the construction process

Kjaergaard, Karl, Molin, Wilmer January 2021 (has links)
Background: The construction industry in Sweden is divided. The need for housing construction is great, but the current production is insufficient. Many factors are affecting the production of new properties, both commercial and private. One of the most significant factors in the construction industry's insufficient production opportunities is the industry's own development. The development of the industry has largely been stagnant for several decades. This has been ongoing until this millenium, when digitalisation has also made an entrance in the construction sector. Several digital tools and working methods have been developed to streamline the industry. Among the most prominent tools that have entered the market are BIM, building information modeling. From having worked with physical blueprints and drawings, actors such as planners and project managers now have access to digital construction documents. Construction documents that contain much more information such as geometric and quantity of based information linked to different building parts. BIM models are to a very high degree a major contributing factor to both increased efficiency and digitalisation of the industry. Purpose: With this thesis, we want to identify concrete areas of use for BIM models and how they are used in the industry today. We also intend to identify opportunities to improve the use and implementation of BIM models and get answers to what challenges the implementation and practice of BIM models the production faces. Method: For this study, in-depth interviews, own observations and gathering of previously published empirical data have formed the basis for method choices. The in-depth interviews that have been conducted have involved highly relevant people who use BIM in their working life. These in-depth interviews have given us a highly up-to-date picture of what the use of BIM models mean and look like. Conclusion: The digitalisation of the construction industry entails major changes in the construction process. The implementation of digital tools and programs has been a huge step in the industry's development. The working methods for each step in the construction process have developed significantly, and the methods are constantly optimized and streamlined. BIM's influence on how a project is carried out, from start to finish, has undoubtedly improved the construction industry and the possibilities with BIM undoubtedly mean a further development.

Användningen Av BIM inom fastighetsförvaltningen : I vilken utsträckning används BIM och digitala verktyg i förvaltningsprocessen idag?

Groth, Oscar, Younes, Anthony January 2023 (has links)
The thesis aims to investigate the extent to which BIM and other digital tools are used in property management today and to identify problem areas. The main focus area of the work is managers and project managers in the construction industry. The gap between the actors in the industry has become larger as the administration has not come as far in technological development. In adequate communication and information management in property management costs the Swedish real estate sector 20 billion SEK a year. BIM has gained increased interest and developed several applications early in the project cycle. It also provides the opportunity to create and manage quantifiable information for different purposes, which means that it can also be applied later in the life cycle regarding the management and use of the building. The work is based on qualitative data collection methods in the form of interviews and literature studies. Interviews have been conducted with managers who have varying experiences of BIM. Literature study is based on scientific articles and literature. BIM is used to a small extent in management and the use varies depending on the scope and location of the property. Managers' perception of the concept of BIM differs from each other. It appears that the use of digital tools is significantly higher than the use of BIM. This is based on a lack of knowledge and skepticism about the viability of specific activities. Managers agree that BIM-based information management can contribute to the safe and efficient management of buildings. What is required is a management-oriented model to promote user-friendliness.

PROJEKTERING MED TVÅDIMENSIONELLA ELLER TREDIMENSIONELLA RITNINGAR : En jämförelse baserad på konsulters erfarenhet

Ezzidin, Jin January 2016 (has links)
More and more companies within the building sector are using BIM (Building Information Model). This degree project has the increased use of BIM as a background, but the work is mainly focused on possibilities and limitations specifically for the work with 3D (three-dimensional drawings). The purpose of this study is to compare the work and costs in practice when working with drawings in 2D or 3D. In addition to a literature study, drawings from a particular building are compared, where the original 2D drawings are converted into 3D. Investigations using interviews and questionnaires have been made including several different companies where the respondents have different professions. The answers were really useful, and the results are mainly based on these answers. Conducting all investigations and compiling all the answers gave a balanced picture mainly regarding the work with 3D in practice. One important result is that one should distinguish between BIM and 3D, where BIM is equivalent to a work approach that is recommended primarily for larger projects where you have the possibility to save large sums of money. The advantages and disadvantages between 2D and 3D drawings depends on how you are as a person and how much experience you have with the different software. Moreover, there is no exact figure that explains the economic gain or loss specifically by using 2D or 3D. Results and experiences of this work, however, suggests that in the fairly near future only 3D will be used.

Johansson, Pontus, Olander, Pontus January 2016 (has links)
Purpose: BIM has the potential to reduce the number of design errors in construction projects. Possibilities to change parts at a later stage, as well as better opportunities to which the designer himself can detect if anything wrong has been done. The possibility to discover faults easier and with better opportunities for changes should lead to the defects related to design errors in production decreases. The introduction of BIM in a firm may be costly and clear evidence that the design errors decreased by BIM has not been found. The goal of the work is to find out whether the introduction of BIM in the design stage in construction has led to fewer defects related to design errors in the production stage. Method: In order to achieve the target set has interviews with designers at two consulting companies been implemented. This is to find out how the methods of the designing has become more BIM-based. A document analysis has been carried out on the lists of defects and changes from eleven different engineering projects of varying size. These documents come from two large contractors in Sweden. Findings: The deisgners interviewed describe the methods for designing roads and facilities have gone on to become more BIM-based. Having previously designed in 2D CAD it has gone over more to the 3D models. In the 3D software it is also possible to add different models to the same file and check for any errors between them. To check itself has also become easier than when the designing was done in 2D CAD. The lists of changes and defects also shows that the amount of the defects related to design errors was reduced significantly compared to how it looked in a study conducted in 1999 and mentioned in a study from 2014. Implications: The introduction of BIM in the design has led to the defects related to design errors out in production has fallen. This would be of interest to companies thinking of introducing BIM in their organization but have not yet seen the benefits that BIM brings. Limitations: The thesis is relevant to both designers and contractors in civil engineering. This is when the work has been focused more towards the road and facility than designing of houses. Designers and entrepreneurs from different companies in different parts of Sweden have contributed to the collection of data, which means that the results can be assumed to be general. Contact with more companies from more places in Sweden had definitely been able to make the results even more generally. Keywords: BIM, design, changes, design errors / Syfte: BIM har potentialen att minska antalet projekteringsfel i anläggningsprojekt. Nyckelord: BIM, projektering, ÄTA-arbeten, projekteringsfel.
