Instrumental Vibrato: An Annotated Bibliography of Historical Writings Before 1940

January 2012 (has links)
abstract: The use of instrumental vibrato in certain periods of classical music performances has become a highly debated and often fiery topic. The scholars of yesterday had only a few sources with which to gain a better understanding of the definition, mechanics, employment, and prevalent attitudes of those coming before them. This project aims to develop the foundation to a better understanding of instrumental vibrato by compiling primary source material written before 1940 and secondary source material relevant to that period into an annotated bibliography. The source materials in this study were mainly comprised of treatises, tutors, method books, newspaper articles, and dictionaries. The instruments covered in this study included the violin family and relatives (viols, etc...), woodwinds (including recorder), members of the brass family, organ, other keyboard instruments, guitar/banjo/lute, theremin, and prototype/niche instruments (such as player pianos). This project investigated 309 historical documents, finding 258 contained writings about instrumental vibrato. Of those, 157 were presented as bibliographic annotations. The author found no consensus at any time in the history of Western art music between 1550-1940 that vibrato is wholly acceptable or wholly unacceptable. / Dissertation/Thesis / D.M.A. Music 2012

Information literacy skills : Hong Kong primary teachers' perceptions of the role of the teacher librarian

Leung, Yuet Ha January 2018 (has links)
The thesis reviewed the changes to the role of teacher librarians and the implications of this for primary teachers. The study sought to explore the teachers’ views about information literacy skills, who should teach them and the role of the teacher librarian. This study took a mix-methods approach, i.e. quantitative and qualitative research, in which self-report data were collected through a questionnaire to classroom teachers followed by individual face to face interview with six questionnaire respondents. The findings of the study were that teachers associate information literacy skills with information technology skills. Though they said they understand information literacy skills, their understanding of information literacy skills was discrete and not systematic compared with the definition of information literacy skills in the literature. They agreed that information literacy skills were important and they have the responsibility to teach student such skills. They agreed that they have further professional development needs in terms of information literacy skills. Teachers who started teaching before 1998 reported some changes in teaching and learning made by the presence of the teacher librarian. They agreed with the provision of the teacher librarian post though they were not aware of the legislated role of the teacher librarian. They thought that awareness of the role of the teacher librarian and information literacy skills and the ability to develop students’ information literacy skills would help them utilize the skills of the teacher librarian. The findings have highlighted the implications for teacher education to train teacher information literacy skills, raise teachers’ awareness of the role of the teacher librarian especially in Cooperative Planning and Teaching with teachers to equip student information literacy skills. For serving teachers, piloting the role of the teacher librarian, Cooperative Planning and Teaching and flexible library timetable are necessary to facilitate implementation of the legislated role of the teacher librarian.

A user-centered design of a web-based interface to bibliographic databases

Ahmed, S. M. Zabed January 2002 (has links)
This thesis reports results of a research study into the usefulness of a user-centred approach for designing information retrieval interfaces. The main objective of the research was to examine the usability of an existing Web-based IR system in order to design a user-centred prototype Web interface. A series of usability experiments was carried out with the Web of Science. The first experiment was carried out using both novice and experienced users to see their performance and satisfaction with the interface. A set of search tasks was obtained from a user survey and was used in the study. The results showed that there were no significant differences in the time taken to complete the tasks, and the number of different search terms used between the two search groups. Novice users were significantly more satisfied with the interface than the experienced group. However, the experienced group was significantly more successful, and made fewer errors than the novice users. The second experiment was conducted on novices' learning and retention with the Web of Science using the same equipment, tasks and environment. The results of the original learning phase of the experiment showed that novices could readily pick up interface functionality when a brief training was provided. However, their retention of search skills weakened over time. Their subjective satisfaction with the interface also diminished from learning to retention. These findings suggested that the fundamental difficulties of searching IR systems still remain with the Web-based version. A heuristic evaluation was carried out to find out the usability problems in the Web of Science interface. Three human factors experts evaluate the interface. The heuristic evaluation was very helpful in identifying some interface design issues for Web IR systems. The most fundamental of these was increasing the match between system and the real world. The results of both the usability testing and the heuristic evaluations served as a baseline for designing a prototype Web interface. The prototype was designed based on a conceptual model of users' information seeking. Various usability evaluation methods were used to test the usability of the prototype system. After each round of testing, the interface was modified in accordance with the test findings. A summative evaluation of the prototype interface showed that both novice and experienced users improved their search performance. Comparative analysis with the earlier usability studies also showed significant improvements in performance and satisfaction with the prototype. These results show that user-centred methods can yield better interface design for IR systems.

Graphic communications education, art or technology? : a curriculum materials resource guide

Scurr, Peter Grant January 1981 (has links)
Graphic communications courses are being taught in the province of British Columbia without official recognition from the Ministry of Education. As a result development of graphic communication programs has been sporadic and independent. Although the Ministry of Education does not officially recognize Graphic Communications, they do provide funds for equipment and facilities. Graphic communications or graphic arts is traditionally accepted as a component of industrial education. Without official recognition by the Ministry of Education and the Faculties of Education, there is no teacher training in graphic communications available in this province. Thus educators involved with graphic communication courses have diverse backgrounds and have been trained in either art, industrial education or business education. Curriculum development has reflected this diversity of experience and background. This thesis project was initiated because of the following discrepancies. There are no prescribed courses of study but seventy-five programs exist throughout the province. There are no provincial teacher training programs but teachers are authorized to offer graphic communications courses. There are no provincially prepared resource materials but curriculum guides are available in Canada and the United States. The objective of this thesis is to assemble resource material for graphic communications education and to propose a rationale for the development of a program of studies recognized by the Ministry of Education. Graphic communications is a component of visual communications that integrates concepts from both art education and industrial education. This blend of art and technology can provide a philosophical base for program development. The interface of personal expression with machine manipulation is the basis for preparing graphic materials. The review of graphic communications curriculum materials was initiated to determine the existence and availability of prepared materials. The research was conducted over a twelve month period and consisted of correspondence with every state and provincial education agency in Canada and the United States. The collection represents the present status of curriculum development and provides numerous examples of curriculum strategies. An emphasis on motor skill development was evident in the collected materials. Graphic communications is an inter-disciplinary course of studies and program development should reflect the relationship of imagery and technology. Personal expression and skill development are components needed to prepare and produce graphic material. This philosophical blend of concepts from art and industrial education can provide the impetus to promote the integration of imagery and technology inherent in graphic communications education. / Education, Faculty of / Curriculum and Pedagogy (EDCP), Department of / Graduate

Testing featural and holistic composite technologies under different methods of face recall

Prag, Bhavesh January 2005 (has links)
This thesis evaluates the effectiveness of two facial composite systems, used to produce facial images of alleged perpretators of crime, under varying conditions in two experiments. The first system is called E-face, a configural eigenfaced-based system originally developed at the University of Cape Town and currently undergoing further revisions; the second is called Faces, a featural system currently being used by several law enforcement agencies around the world.
