This work tackles the contentious issue of the relacionship between racism and the economy. Our analysis is undertaken within the framework of the transition from slave to free labor in the sugar-producing Recôncavo region of Bahia and focuses on the ¿ non-recognition¿ by historical economic studies of the rich experience imbedded in the slave and post-abolition periods. Therefore, our study is a contribuition to the on going debate around the heterogeneity of Brazil¿s formative process. This study examines the role that racism has played in determining the forms of labor organization and re-organization of the post-abolition period, highlighting the mechanisms of racial control erected against the ex-slaves, as well as the survival strategies that the latter and their descendents employed with a view to their insertion into the labor market / Doutorado / Historia Economica / Doutor em Ciências Econômicas
