LAUGHING IN CIRCLES: EXPLORING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN POLITICALLY CORRECT DISCOURSES AND STAND-UP COMEDY IN TORONTO

George, Meghna 10 1900 (has links)

It has been suggested that Canadian society increasingly promotes a rhetoric of tolerance, through the dissemination of multicultural and politically correct discourses. At the same time, there has been a growth in the popularity of performances that seemingly counters this national image; that of risqué stand-up comedy. This dissertation explores if an institutionalized rhetoric of multiculturalism and “PC”, popularized since the late 1980s, is pierced, protracted and parodied within risqué stand-up comedy while remaining confined within spatial and temporal boundaries. Furthermore, this relationship between comedy and multicultural and “PC” discourses illuminates the nature of power circulating within our dialogues about issues of discrimination in contemporary Canadian society. This thesis establishes that both stand-up comic performances and politically correct rhetoric share a carnivalesque nature that while degrades authorial discourses, is ultimately constrained within its self-definition.
/ Master of Arts (MA)

Dominicci Buzó, Jose R. 02 October 2024 (has links)
The literary depiction of prostitutes and courtesans in early modern Spanish and Italian literature (15th-17th centuries) generally follows the misogynistic and patriarchal norms characteristic of the period. Female characters associated with sexual commerce (including go-betweens and procuresses) are presented negatively and tend to meet forms of punishment (death, public humiliation) in line with the moralizing parameters in which they operate. The dissertation centers on three works—the anonymous Carajicomedia (1519), Francisco Delicado’s Retrato de la Lozana andaluza (1524), and Pietro Aretino’s Le sei giornate (1536)—that go against the dominant moralizing representation of female sexual workers, even to the point of celebrating their mode of existence and behavior rather than condemning it. Male characters, in turn, are often presented in a disparaging light, challenging readers’ patriarchal expectations. The dissertation seeks to explain these anomalous works through the lens of Mikhail Bakhtin’s theoretical approach to François Rabelais’s Gargantua et Pantagruel (composed in the same period) whose fundamental characteristics closely conform to the popular-festive environment and practices of Carnival and related phenomena. The “logic” of Carnival is based on systematic transgression, on forms of symbolic inversion (the “world-upside-down”), and the celebration of the human body and its pleasures in a way that breaks the norms of an “official culture” as established by the Church and State. The dissertation strives to place the three works studied in the same unique sociohistorical context that enabled the genesis not only of Rabelais’s works, but several by Erasmus, Cervantes, and Shakespeare: all writers—according to Bakhtin—that activated the worldview of the popular-festive culture that surrounded them. The subsequent ambivalent, if not overtly negative, reception of the three works at the center of the dissertation is largely due to the inability of scholars from later periods to comprehend the precise sociocultural dynamics in play in their production—a fate similar to that suffered by Rabelais’s masterful Gargantua et Pantagruel. / 2026-10-01T00:00:00Z

Dostoiévski e a dialética: fetichismo da forma, utopia como conteúdo / Dostoevsky and dialectics: fetishism of form, utopia ascontent

Vassoler, Flávio Ricardo 11 December 2015 (has links)
The aim of this dissertation is to analyse and interpret the historical, aesthetic, political and literary meaning of the dialectical tensions exposed in the work of the Russian author Fyodor Dostoevsky. On the first part (thesis), Dostoevsky and the Fetishism of Commodity Form, the analysis of Dostoevskys work takes us to both tensions and elective affinities which intertwine two perspectives: polyphony, as it is proposed by the Russian critic Mikhail Bakhtin (1895-1975), in Problems of Dostoevskys Poetics (1929/1963), and materialist dialectics, mainly from the Aesthetic Theory (1968), by the German author Theodor Adorno (1903-1969). The aim is to totalize the polyphonic concerts aporias, so that the analysis dialectically unveils the immanent mimesis of commodity form as the historical and tautological meaning of Dostoevskys form, mainly from Notes from Underground (1864). On the second part (antithesis), Dostoevskys Content as the Healing of the Spirit towards Utopia?, we try to structure the philosophy of history which is established through the authors work. Dostoevskys dialogues which intertwine socialism and Christianity make us correlate the discussions which are established in Memoirs from the House of the Dead (1862), Winter Notes on Summer Impressions (1863), Notes from Underground (1864), Crime and Punishment (1866), The Idiot (1869), The Devils (1872) and, essentially, in two chapters of The Brothers Karamazov (1879): The Revolt and The Grand Inquisitor. Finally and as a harbinger of an overcoming (Aufhebung) Dostoevskys content of history as a dialectical movement towards utopia makes us put into dialogue the short story The dream of a ridiculous man (1877) with the concept of healing of the spirit, which the German philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770-1831) develops in his Philosophy of History (1837).

Paulo (OESP), Folha de S. Paulo (FSP) e O Globo (OG). The identification and comprehension of such neoliberal values on the journalistic texts and on the newspaper advertisements contribute to the understanding of the relation between the aforementioned newspapers and the neoliberal discourse regarding the need for a new Brazilian State Pension reform that would involve, in general terms and under a market logic, a reduction of the benefits offered by the State Pension and, thus, opening space for the development of several kinds of private pensions. This is a key understanding for comprehending the market interests in the appropriation of more financial resources, which are going to be directed to the ambit of the financial globalization and of the implications of such process for the working class that daily lives the dismantling of the State Pension in Brazil and worldwide by the conservative remodeling proposed by the neoliberals. In order to achieve the objective of this research, which is to identify, analyze and interpret the values from the neoliberal discourse regarding the Brazilian pensions that are on the newspapers: OESP, FSP and OG, this thesis relies on the Bakhtin circle s philosophy of language and on the Dialogic Discourse Analysis (DDA) formulated from a Bakhtinian standpoint. The theoretical and methodological framework grounded on such perspective demands the analysis of both the journalistic texts that constitute the corpus of this research and the texts that are not necessarily on those newspapers pages, but which dialogues with them by addressing the neoliberalism and its relation with the social security, the Brazilian pensions and the news organizations approached by this thesis. The corpus of this research is composed by journalistic texts (news, press notes, opinion articles, editorials and interviews) and newspaper advertisements regarding the Brazilian pensions, which were published from 1st Oct. of 2010 to 31st March of 2011, i.e. in a period that comprehends the run-up to the elections and the beginning of Roussef s presidential term, by the newspapers: OESP, FSP and OG. The dialogic discourse analysis conducted here enabled the identification and comprehension of three traditional values from the neoliberalism in relation to the Brazilian pensions, which are: the need for a tightening of the fiscal stance in order to balance the budget of the Brazilian state pension; the meritocracy related to the private pension; and, the State s inefficiency in dealing with the pension system / Esta pesquisa defende a tese de que valores do discurso neoliberal sobre a previdência brasileira se materializam nas páginas dos jornais O Estado de S. Paulo (OESP), Folha de S. Paulo (FSP) e O Globo (OG).
