Anfíbios em uma floresta úmida da vertente pacífico ao sudoeste da Colômbia: avaliação da diversidade e sistemática de espécies, e o uso de recursos alimentares / Amphibians from a premontane rain forest on the Pacific slope in southwestern Colombia: evaluation of the species diversity and systematics, and the use of food resources

Paul David Alfonso Gutiérrez-Cárdenas 30 June 2015 (has links)
Because of concerns with the conservation status of many of these species, it has been suggested that in Colombia should prioritize research in taxonomy and ecology in undersampled regions in order to enhance the knowledge and conservation of Colombian amphibians. Based on a scientometric analysis of 319 works on ecology of Colombian amphibians published between 1840 and 2014 (Chapter 1), we identified trends in the efforts made in different research topics, and both regional and taxonomic distribution of these studies. Most studies (67%) was conducted in the Colombian Andean region compared to other natural regions of Colombia. Only 46% of amphibian species occurring in Colombia was included in the reviewed studies, and the most of them (58%) is from the Andean region. Among the reviewed publications, we identified 14 research topics in ecology, of which reproductive ecology (26%), species conservation (23%), and diet (14%) were the most investigated. Our data showed that in Colombia, there is a considerable advance in research on amphibian ecology, but we need further efforts to fill many gaps in information for many regions and for many amphibian species possessing incipient data. In southwestern of the Colombian western Andes there is little information about the species occurring there. In order to know some ecological aspects of these species, we conducted three studies on diversity and ecology of the amphibians present in the Reserva Natural Río Ñambí (hereafter RNRÑ). In the Chapter 2, we show an analysis of the systematics of the genus Andinophryne (Family Bufonidae), composed by three species, A. atelopoides, A. colomai (present in the RNRÑ) and A. olallai. The phylogenies showed that Andinophryne is embedded within Rhaebo. Therefore, we synonymize Andinophryne under Rhaebo and we discussed the putative morphological synapomorphies for Rhaebo. In addition, we provide ecological informations and on the conservation status of the three species included in the new taxonomic combination. In the Chapter 3, we show a list of 19 amphibian species from eight families, with a numerical dominance of the Family Craugastoridae and of the genus Pristimantis. The species with the highest relative abundance (>25%) were Pristimantis labiosus and P. verecundus. Seven different reproductive modes were recognized, with most species (68%) presented direct development of eggs. Five (26%) of the species recorded are classified in the categories of greatest threat of extinction. We report for seven species an extension of the latitudinal distribution range in Colombia. In the Chapter 4, we compared the diet of juveniles and adults of P. labiosus in order to identify if there was an ontogenetic shift in the prey size consumed as mouth width increases. The diet was composed of 19 prey categories (> arthropods), and the two age-classes consumed a similar array of prey categories. Juveniles had a broader trophic niche (0.57) than adults (0.25), with a relatively low trophic overlap among them (0.39). Although we found differences in mouth width between juveniles and adults, we did not observe a corresponding ontogenetic shift in prey size consumption. We consider that P. labiosus is a generalist predator, consuming a wide range of prey types and sizes

Do tecer do algodão ao tecer da informação: organizando a explosão informacional do século XIX / -

Luciana Corts Mendes 27 November 2014 (has links)
Analyses the objectives and proposals of information organisation developed by the Bibliographic Movement, and indicates its influence in Information Science. This exploratory research, accomplished through bibliographic survey, literature review, and analysis, investigates in the context of modernity the ideas of Bibliographic Movement exponents Paul Otlet, Wilhelm Ostwald, H. G. Wells, John Cotton Dana, and Watson Davis. The Bibliographic Movement was characterized by its plurality, and aimed to respond to modernity\'s effects in the information world. The movement attributed to information the potentiality of individual transformation. Therefore, it changed the focus of information services from preservation to access, and pursued the organisation of collections according to its contents. The development of technology made the Bibliographic Movement exponents emphasise the application of new technologies to the process of information dissemination in order to facilitate and accelerate it. Information Science inherited its social role partially from the Bibliographic Movement, and aims at organising information so that it can be accessed. Information Science also shares with the movement the perspective of employing high technology to disseminate information. The Zeitgeist that gave rise to the Bibliographic Movement led to a common set of ideas and allowed the elaboration of similar proposals for the organisation of information. However, it is not discarded the probability of mutual influence between the individuals analysed. Despite its historical specificity the Bibliographic Movement shares with Information Science modern ideas and its relation to culture. It is concluded that the current information culture and the information culture of the Bibliographic Movement have differences, notwithstanding, they are entwined cultures and many of their problems are similar and need similar solutions

A influência de autores estrangeiros no aumento de citações em periódicos brasileiros de medicina: uma análise bibliométrica / The influence of foreign authors on citations increase in Brazilian medical journals: a bibliometric analysis

Montefusco, Adilson Marcos 23 February 2018 (has links)
Idioma, tipo do documento, indicador Scimago (cites per doc - 2 years) e categoria do assunto do periódico influenciaram significantemente o número de citações recebidas / Introduction: The challenge of increasing the impact of Brazilian science has been much discussed. Compared with other countries, Brazil has a high publication rate, but with low citation index per document. While sponsoring and research institutions are proposing international cooperation as a means of increasing the impact of science, journal editors question this demand. Objective: To evaluate whether, in Brazilian medical journals, the number of received citations is influenced by the type of authors affiliation and other variables related to the document or to the journal. Methods: A total of 61 medical journals published in Brazil in 2012 were analyzed, SCImago and Scopus were used to extract the articles and their data. The number of citations of a document over five years was analyzed according to the authors\' affiliation (national, international or in collaboration), language and document type, SCImago index and journal subject category. Results: Univariate analyses showed that all tested variables influenced the number of received citations. After adjusting for covariates by multivariate analysis, we observed an increase of citations in 0.17 (95% CI: 0.094-0.246) for documents with affiliation in collaboration when compared to national affiliation. A significant increase in the number of citations was observed in bilingual documents (English and Portuguese) 0.329 (95% CI: 0.256-0.402) and only English 0.158 (95% CI: 0.086-0.231) when compared to documents in Portuguese, document type: Article 1.716 (95% CI: 1.410-2.021) and Review 2.931 (95% CI: 2.618-3.245) when compared to Article-in-Press and that have subject category Hematology 1.280 (95% CI: 1.019-1.540), among others, when compared to geriatrics and gerontology. Conclusion: Documents with authorship in collaboration increased, in a discreet way, the citation index in journals of interest, when compared to those with national authorship. Language, document type, SCImago index (cites per doc 2 years) and journal subject category significantly influenced the number of received citations

Use of electronic databases by postgraduate students in the Faculty of Science and Agriculture at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg.

Soyizwapi, Lindiwe. January 2005 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of electronic databases by postgraduate students in the Faculty of Science and Agriculture at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, with a view to proposing a set of recommendations based on the findings that would contribute to a more effective use of these databases. The study focussed on the use students made of electronic databases provided by the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg Library and any other electronic databases which provided information and were needed for their studies. The study population consisted of 500 registered postgraduate students. The survey instrument used to elicit data was a self-administered questionnaire that was distributed to a sample population of 100 postgraduate students. The questionnaire sought to establish if postgraduate students used electronic databases, which electronic databases postgraduate students used and the reasons for their choice, to identify problems postgraduate students encountered, how students became aware of the databases and how often they used the available databases. A total of 65 postgraduate students responded, a response rate of 65%. The results were analysed in terms of frequency responses and they are graphically displayed in the form of tables and graphs. The study found that postgraduate students did use the electronic databases, but a few of the databases were not used. A number of problems were experienced when using the databases. Students became aware of the availability of electronic databases from a variety of sources such as friends, library orientation programmes and academic staff. Search engines were identified as a resource that was very popular with almost all the students. There was a need for training on use of the databases and a need for improving access for all campus and off-campus users. Recommendations for action and further research, based on the conclusions of the study, are made. / Thesis (M.I.S.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2005.

An investigation of the role of microcomputers as information retrieval tools in the greater Pietermaritzburg schools' water audit projects.

Addo, Hillar Gbagidi Komla. January 1999 (has links)
In South Africa, government (Mbeki 1996:37) and educators (SAIDE Report 1998:9) have expressed concern over the provision of microcomputers for learners. Their provision to schools would allow their effective use across the curriculum and enhance education. This study investigated the role of microcomputers as information retrieval tools in the 1997 schools' Water Audit projects in the greater Pietermaritzburg area. The study considered, firstly, a discussion of environmental education with emphasis on water conservation, and secondly the Water Audit projects. An overview of issues relating to microcomputer systems as information retrieval tools in education was presented. A descriptive survey method was employed for the study, with questionnaires as the data collection technique. Thirty out of 40 teachers/school project co-ordinators were sampled, with a 24 (80%) response. Twenty percent of 550 pupils who participated in the projects also responded. Data was presented by the use of tables. The study revealed an unequal availability of microcomputers among the schools in the departments of education, as they existed prior to 1994, that participated in the projects. Findings also revealed that only a minority of pupils used the microcomputer system for information retrieval during the projects. The use of hard copy sources was significantly high within the departments. A high number of pupils who used the microcomputer found it useful. A higher number that used hard copy sources found them useful. Training of pupils to acquire computer and information skills was inadequate. Major problems encountered during the projects included congestion, lack of computer skills on the part of both teachers and pupils and inadequate training of participants. The study found infrastructural backlogs and logistical problems as hindrances to the delivery of education in South Africa using microcomputers. Non-involvement of media teachers negatively impacted on the results of the projects. It was recommended that schools without microcomputers liaise with donor agencies to acquire microcomputers, while government initiates policies to address the issue of equity. Educators and media teachers should be given concerted training in computer and information skills, as training underpins the use of microcomputers in an information age school. / Thesis (MIS)-University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 1999.

Resource Description and Access (RDA): continuity in an ever-fluxing information age with reference to tertiary institutions in the Western Cape.

Janse van Rensburg, Rachel January 2018 (has links)
Magister Library and Information Studies - MLIS / Although Resource Description and Access (RDA) has been discussed extensively amongst the ranks of cataloguers internationally, no research on the perceptions of South African cataloguers was available at the time of this research. The aim of this study was to determine how well RDA was faring during the study's timeframe, to give a detailed description regarding cataloguer perceptions within a higher education setting in South Africa. Furthermore, to determine whether the implementation of RDA has overcome most of the limitations that AACR2 had within a digital environment, to identify advantages and/or perceived limitations of RDA as well as to assist cataloguers to adopt and implement the new standard effectively. The study employed a qualitative research design assisted by a phenomenological philosophy to gain insight into how cataloguers experienced the implementation and adoption of RDA by means of two concurrent web-based questionnaires. The study concluded that higher education cataloguing professionals residing in the Western Cape were decidedly positive towards the new cataloguing standard. Although there were some initial reservations, they were overcome to such an extent that ultimately no real limitations were identified, and that RDA has indeed overcome most of the limitations displayed by AACR2. Many advantages of RDA were identified, and participants expressed excitement about the future capabilities of RDA as it continues toward a link-data milieu, making library metadata more easily available. As this research has revealed a distinctly positive attitude from cataloguers' two main matters for future research remains, being: ? Why South African participants in this study voiced almost no perceived limitations to RDA as a cataloguing standard. Future research might be able to relay information regarding this trend, especially in the light that it was not a global phenomenon. ? A deeper look might have to be taken at how participants' experienced RDA training as this phenomenon might be closely linked to the reasons why the participants did not mention more limitations.

The information space sstructurde by the digital approach : development of the service offering in academic libraries

Bourdenet, Philippe 05 December 2013 (has links)
The catalog takes up a special position in the supply of services of academic libraries, as a pivot for the intermediary between users and information professionals who carry the responsibility for building up collections. For 10 years, through a serious crisis, they’ve been seeing their patrons preferring the general or commercial search engines. The Web is more than a serious competitor today, ahead of the document information systems, and became the main access point for information retrieval. Libraries are trying to structure an information space that is temporarily or permanently inhabited by users, in which the service offering is developed, but it is still presented as a series of silos, with few opportunities of navigation between them despite considerable engineering efforts and a perspective of evolution towards discovery tools. The profession, having become aware of this deep crisis after accusing eddies caused by the breakdown of the digital switch, looking for ways to adapt and diversify its offering, streamlines the dissemination of information, and reinvents its roles, trying to take advantage of new practices of users, new expectations and new prospects. Libraries put their hope in new data models, trying to add a level of abstraction promoting links with the world of knowledge. The evolution towards the Semantic Web seems to be a valuable opportunity to enhance the collections and make them usable in another context, at the expense of significant efforts sized up by this analysis. A constructivist approach based on participant observation and data collection offers a vision of the outcome within the library community on the development of catalogs and intermediation tools, and an outlook on their issues.

O perfil da produção científica sobre capital natural na Região Metropolitana de Curitiba / The profile of scientific production on natural capital in the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba

Biagi, Aline Maria 06 February 2018 (has links)
The general objective of this dissertation was to analyze the profile of publications on natural capital in the metropolitan region of Curitiba (RMC). The research was based on the analytical model proposed by Meadows, in the approach of the three capitals (natural capital, social capital and built capital), using specifically the "lens" natural capital. This analysis will seek to establish relationships and correlations between the scientific production and the chosen territorial context, demonstrating how the natural capital of the region is portrayed within the scientific production on the same. As a methodology, the research is based on systematic review and content analysis, using a mixed method to quantitatively and qualitatively characterize the scientific production carried out in the MRC from 1992 to 2017. From the categorization of natural capital into eight categories , it was possible to infer about the main thematic and temporal trends of research, besides evaluating this profile from the indicators of quality, impact factor, SJR and SNIP. There was a greater thematic tendency on the biodiversity theme, justified by the high number of sources and forest remnants in the region, but when the number of citations is observed, air / climate publications have greater visibility in the scientific community.
