Experimental Evaluation of the Bond Dependent Coefficient and Parameters which Influence Crack Width in GFRP Reinforced ConcreteMcCallum, Brittany 28 March 2013 (has links)
Reinforcement of concrete flexural components has been traditionally provided by steel rebar; however, durability concerns and life maintenance costs of this product have powered the emergence of fibre reinforced polymers (FRP) as reinforcement in concrete. FRP products hold tremendous promise but their application can be constrained due to design challenges resulting from a reduced modulus of elasticity. The ability to meet serviceability behavior, such as crack width and deflection, is commonly the limiting factor for design. Therefore, the area of FRP reinforcement provided is often greater than the amount required for strength alone and this has significant impacts on the project economics. The bond dependent coefficient (kb) of FRP is required for serviceability design purposes in order to account for the bonding capability of FRP to concrete. The values of this coefficient reported in experimental studies are highly variable, resulting in unreliable crack response predictions. Therefore, a more consistent interpretation and calculation must be found for the bond dependent coefficient due to its critical importance in design.
The bond dependent coefficient, as well as physical parameters which influence crack width in GFRP reinforced concrete, were investigated experimentally in this study using a total of 33 specimens. The test procedure was taken from a procedure being developed by the American Concrete Institute (ACI) Committee 440 and was evaluated and modified as required during testing. Phase I testing was used to investigate and determine the physical parameters which had the most significant influence on cracking behaviour and bonding capability. Using significant findings from Phase I, Phase II testing was structured to focus on the interpretation of the bond dependent coefficient and the statistical variation in a set of 5 identical test specimens. Current design equations, as recommended by ACI 440.1R-06 and CHBDC CAN/CSA-S6-06, were used for the calculation of the bond dependent coefficient for all specimens. Interpretation of the bond dependent coefficient was considered using the stress-level approach and newly developed slope approach.
Results of the study indicated that the high variability of kb was likely due to its interpretation. Current design equations force a zero intercept, neglecting the fact that concrete does not crack immediately upon loading. In addition, clear definitions of service stress and maximum crack width are ambiguous, further complicating the calculation of the bond dependent coefficient. This resulted in a range of kb values for a given beam despite the fact that kb is inherently a material property of the bar. The behaviour of specimens following load cycling was also very different than the initial loading cycle and consequently, kb was also significantly different. As structures in the field will be subjected to continual loading and unloading, the effect of cyclic loading becomes a consideration in the calculation of kb.

The Characteristics of Successful and Unsuccessful School Bond Election Campaigns in Texas, 1976-1977Martin, K. L. 08 1900 (has links)
The purposes of this study were to 1) compare the characteristics between the elections that were successful and unsuccessful; 2) identify the purpose of the school bond issue (demographic characteristics); 3) identify the financial resources and structure of the school districts (economic characteristics); 4) analyze the public relations and publicity techniques used in the school bond campaign (communications variables); 5) determine the degree of responsibility assumed by individuals and groups for the educational, building, and bond needs of the school districts (group involvement); 6) ascertain personal and professional information about the district superintendent as it related to voter influence in the bond campaign; 7) determine prior bond election experience. The major conclusions were that the trend of large or small eligible voter turnout was inconclusive, urban districts had more difficulty than rural or suburban districts in passing bond issues, and bond issues were passed mainly for new facilities. School districts with large assessed valuation per resident student had better results than others. The newspaper, "general talking it up," speakers, public meetings, and telephone committees were effective means of communication. The superintendent, board of education, faculty, principals, P.T.A., and lay groups assumed the most responsibility in the elections.

Bond market development in emerging economies: a case study of the Bond Exchange of South Africa (BESA)Hove, Tagara January 2009 (has links)
This study looks at the development of bond markets in emerging economies and focuses on the development of the Bond Exchange of South Africa (BESA). It explores the history, structure, performance and key issues related to the development of this market within the broader context of domestic, regional and global bond market development. BESA's experience provides valuable lessons for other emerging market economies also seeking to build bond markets. The sophistication of the local bond market is not enough to make it appealing to foreign borrowers. Market development demands an enabling market infrastructure and a background of macroeconomic stability, diversified market participants, deregulation of capital flows and an appropriate regulatory and supervisory environment.

Bioinformatický nástroj pro návrh disulfidických můstků v proteinové struktuře / Bioinformatics Tool for the Design of Disulfide Bonds in Protein StructureSumbalová, Lenka January 2016 (has links)
Proteins are substances with great usage. For industrial usage, proteins are often taken from their natural enviroment. In foreign environment, it proteins can unfold and their function can be compromised. This is the reason for stabilization of proteins and one of ways to stabilization is using disulphide bonds. This work describes basic terms related to protein stabilization - proteins, their structure and interactions within them, basic terms from thermodynamics. Problem of protein stability is discussed and the factors which stabilize or destabilize protein are enumerated with the emphasis on disulphide bonds. Existing approaches to disulphide bonds design, dataset for testing own tool are described. Implementation of the tool using geometrical properties of the bonds and fl exibility of places in protein is described. The tool was tested on proteins with native disulfide bonds and compared to existing tools, also metrics FRO (fractional rank order) was used. Native disulfide bond was found in 64 % of cases, in 60 % of cases this native disulfi de bond was in the first quarter of ordered found disulfi de bonds.
