In-memory Business Intelligence : Verifying its Benefits against Conventional Approaches

Sakulsorn, Pattaravadee January 2013 (has links)
Business intelligence project failures in organizations derive from various causes. Technological aspects regarding the use of business intelligence tools expose the problem of too complicated tool for operational users, lack of system scalability, dissatisfied software performance, and hard coded business requirements on the tools. This study was conducted in order to validate in-memory business intelligence advantages towards functionality, flexibility, performance, ease of use, and ease of development criteria. A case study research method had been applied to achieve the goals in this thesis. Primarily, a pilot study was carried out to collect the data both from literatures and interviews. Therefore, the design of test case had been developed. Types of testing can be divided into 2 categories: BI functionality test and performance test. The test results reveal that in-memory business intelligence enhances conventional business intelligence performance by improving the software’s loading time and response time. At the meantime, it was proved to be flexible than rule-based, query-based, and OLAP tools, whereas its functionality and ease of development were justified to be better than query-based system. Moreover, in-memory business intelligence provides a better ease of use over query-based and rule-based business intelligence tools. Pair wise comparisons and analyses between selected in-memory business intelligence tool, QlikView, and conventional business intelligence software, Cognos, SAS, and STB Reporter, from 3 banks were made in this study based on the aforementioned test results.

Factors That Drive the Selection of Business Intelligence Tools in South African Financial Services Providers

Gina, Bonginkosi Phila 10 August 2021 (has links)
Innovation and technology advancements in information systems (IS) result in multiple product offerings and business intelligence (BI) software tools in the market to implement business intelligence systems (BIS). As a result, a high proportion of organisations fail to employ appropriate and suitable software tools meeting organisational needs, resulting in a prime number of BI solution failures and abandoned projects are therefore recorded. Due to such project failures, benefits associated with BI are not realised hence organisations loose enormous investments on BI solutions and competitive advantage. The study aims at discovering and exploring critical factors influencing the selection of BI tools when embarking on the selection process. This is a quantitative research study and questionnaire surveyed data was collected from 92 participants working in South African financial services providers listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) appearing in the top 100 based on market capitalization. The data was analysed quantitative by employing the use of SPSS and SmartPLS-3 software's to test the significance of influential factors using the proposed conceptual model that emerged from the literature. The findings showed that a combination of domain technical and non-technical factors is critical. Therefore, software tool technical factors (functionality, ease of use, compatibility, availability of an integrated hardware/software package, and availability of source code), vendor technical factors (availability of technical support, technical skills, quality of product, availability of user manual for important information, tutorial for learning and troubleshooting guide, and experience in using product developed by the same vendor), and opinion non-technical factors (end-users, subordinates, outside personnel acquaintances, and improvement in customer service) emerged as significant combination of influential factors to be considered. The study contributes to both academia and industry by providing influential determinants for software tool selection. It is hoped that the findings presented will contribute to a greater understanding of factors influencing the selection of BI tools to researchers and practitioners alike. Furthermore, organisations seeking to select and deliver appropriate BI tools will be better equipped to drive such endeavours.

Business intelligence usage determinants: an assessment of factors influencing indivdual intentions to use a business intelligence system within a financial firm in South Africa

Nkuna, Deane 10 July 2012 (has links)
Although studies are conducted on economical gains due to BI system adoption, limited knowledge is available on factors which influence BI system usage. Identifying these factors is necessary for organisations because this may enable the design of effective BI systems, thus increasing the chance of firms adopting them to realise the actual value inherent in the exploitation of BI systems. The purpose of this study is, therefore, to investigate factors which influence BI system usage. The investigation employed constructs derived from three theoretical frameworks, namely technology acceptance model (TAM), task-technology fit (TTF) and social cognitive theory (SCT) as follows: intention to use, perceived usefulness, perceived ease use, task characteristics, technology characteristics, task-technology fit and computer self-efficacy. To test the hypotheses, data was collected by administering the study to 682 BI system users in a South African financial institution, SA-Bank, wherein 193 usable responses were received. The findings of the study with partial least squares (PLS) analysis indicated support for the joint use of constructs from the three theoretical frameworks, explaining 65% of BI system usage variance. Furthermore, the perceived usefulness of a BI system reflected a stronger influence as a factor of BI system usage over the beliefs that the system was easy to use, and the belief that it was aligned to the performance of business tasks. An unusual outcome in this study was the lack of influence of computer self-efficacy on BI system usage. Nonetheless, the study extended validation of the use of constructs derived from the three theoretical frameworks for a BI technology in the context of SA-Bank, thereby contributing to theory. Finally, the results of hypothesis testing suggested a starting point for practitioners towards designing BI systems, and recommendations and suggestions are included in this report.

Ahmad, Hanna, Asmelash, Simon January 2017 (has links)
Nyckelord – Business Intelligence, beslutstagande, kriterier, mindre företag, system. / Purpose – The purpose of this thesis was to investigate which criteria that are vital before the choice of BI-system for small companies with 10-30 employees. Furthermore, to find an appropriate BI-tool that is applicable for small companies with 10-30 employees.   Method – The authors have used semi-structured interviews and literature studies. The qualitative interviews have been conducted by interviewing BI-experts from five smaller companies. The literature review consisted of scientific articles, course literature, and relevant web-pages.   Findings – The findings of this thesis are a production of criteria and a proposal on BI-tool, in the choice of BI-system for smaller companies with 10-30 employees.   Implications – The produced findings of this thesis indicate that there are gaps in what are essential to think of, before a future investment of a BI-system that is suitable for smaller companies with 10-30 employees. Furthermore, there is limited research about which BI-tool that is appropriate for smaller companies with 10-30 employees. This thesis is directed towards smaller companies that are interested in acquiring a BI-system to their organization.   Limitations – This thesis was limited by time constraints, that is why the authors remained their focus on companies with 10-30 employees.   Keywords – Business Intelligence, decision-making, criteria, smaller companies, system.
