This thesis examines Judith Butler's account of performative agency in relation to its critics, in particular, the question of whether Butler's thesis disavows materiality and thereby agency. These questions are answered by reading Butler's work through the work of Merleau-Ponty, in particular, by comparing Butler's account of performative agency to Merleau-Ponty's account of bodily intentionality. It is argued that a common ground underlies these featured concepts. I identify this common ground through the institution of the concept "simultaneity" to express a relationship of reciprocity between meaning and materiality through which ontological and epistemological significance is, reciprocally, sedimented and transformed; stabilised and destabilised.

E, nessa mistura das cores, como apontou Safo, nesse caleidoscópio em forma de arco-íris é gerada uma construção histórica, na qual se constitui uma narrativa. Nesse processo, surgem novas formas, como assim indica Foucault, em um jogo político e o pensar como sujeito. Vale afirmar também que da era clássica à contemporânea verifica-se a grande contribuição que, significativamente, fornece subsídios para o reconhecimento da diversidade das identidades, incluindo a sexualidade. Deduz-se que, decerto, o conceito de identidade problematizado conduz a uma compreensão da formação do corpo político das lésbicas e os elementos envolvidos. O marco teórico abordado nesta dissertação está centrado nas poesias de Safo, bem como em pensadores e filósofos. Por fim, a fluidez no agir desse corpo político possibilita certa originalidade a este. Assim, a sexualidade é colocada sob novos modos criativos, isso em certo sentido quer dizer que não se descobre o esbianismo, pois este existe pela vontade e é nseparável do que se é. ______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This paper aims to establish a dialogue on the formation of the body politic of lesbians, streamlined and historical processes. And this mix of colors, as noted by Sappho, this kaleidoscope in the shape of the rainbow is created a historic building, which is a narrative. And so, in the process new forms, as Foucault put a political game and thinking as a subject. It also states that of the classical era to the contemporary era there is the great contribution that provides significant subsidies for the recognition of the diversity of identities, and that includes sexuality. Surely questioned the concept of identity leads to an understanding of the formation of the body politic of lesbians and the elements involved. The theoretical framework discussed in this dissertation is the centrality of poetry in Safo, thinkers (s) and philosophers. Finally, the fluidity of the body politic act allows certain originality to it. Thus, sexuality is placed under new creative ways, in a sense this means that lesbianism is not discovered, because it exists by the will and is inseparable from what one is.

The success of teacher strikes is often analyzed according to tangible outcomes, such as salary gains or the prevention of privatization bills. The point of this dissertation, however, is to argue that there are significant intangible outcomes as well. Using the West Virginia teacher strikes of 2018 and 2019 as a case study, I argue that the intangible outcomes of teacher strikes comprise a political-aesthetic education that expands the possibilities for how teachers can live within a neoliberal and patriarchal context. To do this, I develop a theoretical framework using three disparate yet nested concepts: counter-conduct, as used by Michel Foucault; performativity, as used by Judith Butler; and aesthetics, including everyday aesthetics, as used by Yuriko Saito, and somaesthetics, as used by Richard Shusterman. With this theoretical framework, I analyze the West Virginia teacher strikes as both political manifestations and aesthetic experiences. I collected data on the strikes through teachers’ written and spoken first-personal narratives, media interviews, academic books and articles, podcasts, videos, and images. Ultimately, I find that in their strikes, the West Virginia teachers performed counter-conduct against particular characteristics expected of them under neoliberalism and patriarchy. Even though not articulated or asserted, this counter-conduct could be aesthetically experienced through the sensuous and felt dimensions of the strikes. Teachers could feel, see, and hear the performance of alternative ways of being. This experience led to an expansion of possibilities for how teachers live as educators and as persons, even without dismantling the governmentalities of neoliberalism and patriarchy.

Ce mémoire retrace l’évolution parallèle des concepts de genre et de sujet depuis Le deuxième sexe de Simone de Beauvoir jusqu’à la théorie du genre performatif et citationnel de Judith Butler. Dans un premier temps, nous considérons comment le concept de genre s’introduit dans la théorie féministe et y est envisagé tantôt comme un point de vue subjectif sur le monde, tantôt comme une structure sociale oppressive. En effet, dans le sillage de la dénaturalisation du sujet femme amorcée par Beauvoir, certaines autrices se concentrent sur l’aspect subjectif du genre, en prônant une valorisation de la différence féminine, tandis que d’autres, envisageant avant tout le genre comme une structure oppressive, visent l’égalité à travers son abolition. Nous montrons dans un deuxième temps comment la théorie butlérienne du genre, fondée sur une conception poststructuraliste du sujet constitué, permet de résoudre le conflit entre subjectivité et normativité en replaçant la norme au coeur de la constitution du sujet, et rend ainsi compte du genre à la fois comme structure essentielle du sujet et comme norme oppressive. Cette compréhension du genre nous permet aussi d’envisager la tâche du féminisme comme une transformation de la norme du genre et un effort constant pour déstabiliser et ouvrir les catégories qui composent l’identité du sujet. / This thesis retraces the parallel evolution of the concepts of gender and of the subject starting from Simone de Beauvoir’s The Second Sex up to Judith Butler’s theory of gender as performative and citational. In the first chapter, I examine how “gender” is introduced into feminist philosophy and considered, alternatively, as a subjective view point and as an oppressive social structure. In the wake of Beauvoir’s attempt at denaturalizing “woman,”some feminists chose to focus on the subjective aspect of gender by valuing feminity as difference, while others, considering gender first and foremost as an oppressive structure, sought to achieve equality through its abolition. In the second chapter, I show how Butler’s account of gender, based in a poststructuralist understanding of the subject as constituted,resolves the conflict between normativity and subjectivity by conceiving of the norm as central to the subject. Gender is thus accounted for as both an essential component of subjectivity and an oppressive norm. This understanding of gender also entails that the task of feminism is defined as the transformation of the norm of gender, and as a constant effort to destabilize and open the categories that make up the identity of the subject.

Tesis para optar al grado de Magíster en Estudios de Género y Cultura en América Latina mención Humanidades / No autorizada su publicación a texto completo, según petición de su autor. / El objetivo de la presente investigación será volver sobre la división social en Marx con la intención de introducirla críticamente en el debate contemporáneo de género signado por los trabajos de Foucault y Butler, teniéndose como hipótesis que las dificultades y aporías en el constituir proyectos políticos emancipatorios pueden verse mermadas radicalmente con hacer entrar en juego aquel asunto de la división. La investigación se estructura en cuatro partes. En la primera realizaremos una sinopsis intencionada del debate en los estudios críticos de género a fin de trazar el contexto de la presente tesis. En la segunda parte abordaremos conceptualmente el debate contemporáneo crítico de género, centrándonos en su matriz predominante: la matriz foucaultiana y butleriana de la subjetividad y del poder y su aporía en torno a la emancipación y el resistir. La intención de esta segunda parte será preguntarnos si ahí donde el poder tiene la forma de productor de la subjetividad como sujecionada (assujetti), habrá todavía un lugar para la emancipación. En la tercera parte se buscará trazar el asunto de la división social en los primeros escritos de Marx, así como el lugar fundamental en esta problemática de elementos como la enajenación, la emancipación humana, el asunto del género humano, entre otros. La intención de esta tercera parte será delinear las imbricancias entre esta problemática de la división y la constitución de la subjetividad, para así, posteriormente, poder hacer entrar en diálogo –de mismos términos– el pensamiento de Marx con el debate contemporáneo de género, debate que tiene lugar –como señalamos– excelsamente en términos de subjetivación. Trazado aquel nivel de términos para la división en Marx, en una cuarta y última parte, se establecerán implicancias críticas de su problemática de la división para el debate contemporáneo de género. La intención de esta última parte es establecer en esa confrontación la posibilidad crítica de la emancipación en las luchas políticas de género, abriéndose así la posibilidad de desbordar la aporía del resistir que nos embarga.

Tesis (magíster en derecho con mención en derecho público) / El feminismo como teoría crítica y movimiento social tiene siglos de historia. Con vaivenes, con sus conquistas y sus retrocesos, la teoría feminista ha logrado insertar en el orden social una reflexión y acción frente a la dominación masculina, siempre desde la producción teórica consciente y polémica. En esa lid se inserta este trabajo, cuyo propósito es aportar elementos teóricos para la construcción del sujeto político del feminismo, en una perspectiva institucional; es decir, desde el Estado. Para ello, se desarrolla una aproximación al sujeto del feminismo que reúne las aportaciones de los feminismos liberal, radical, postmoderno y postestructuralista, con el objeto de reconocer subjetividades nuevas, distintas y cambiantes, a partir de las cuales insertar el feminismo en el Estado. Ello se compromete con dos cuestiones que están presentes a lo largo de todo este trabajo: por un lado, la importancia de la dimensión polémica en la construcción de las identidades colectivas –de allí la necesidad de detenernos en el dominio de lo político– y, por otro, el desafío de traer estas diversas formas de vida, envueltas en la categoría mujeres, a una forma jurídica.
