Linguistic sexism in a digitally native news outlet : A study on linguistic sexism at lexical and discourse levels in Buzzfeed News / Språklig sexism i en digitally native nyhetskälla : En studie on språklig sexism på ord- och diskursnivå i Buzzfeed NewsHammarqvist Kristensen, Johanna January 2019 (has links)
In 2018, most news articles are consumed online from a digitally native news outlet and it is therefore appropriate to examine the presence of linguistic sexism in the digitally native news site Buzzfeed News. The material is made up of 159 articles collected from Buzzfeed News. Selected features at the lexical and discourse levels are analysed using a quantitative method with qualitative elements. The selected features at the lexical level include generic pronouns and nouns, focused on the affix -man- and naming practices for females and males. At the discourse level, the selected features include how females and males are described in terms of their relationships, appearance and age-related words. Linguistic sexism is found to be expressed at both the lexical and discourse levels in the material. It is mainly expressed in naming practices, the use of relationship words and age-related words.

It is a time of constant changes in communication and journalism, especially with internet and technology. This research intends to understand technoculture of new media (MANOVICH, 2001, 2013) on audiovisual journalism on web. The problems were based on the method of intuition (BERGSON, 2006) that lead to the understanding of audiovisual journalism as a virtual that updated itself on several media, particularly on web. This paper aims to understand what senses are given to audiovisual journalism on web through the analysis of New York Times and BuzzFeed with the frame method (KILPP, 2010). In the deconstructing of images, it was realized different paths on the attempts of ownership of the medium in a transitory stage of the technique that at the same time experiments network logic and recycles traditional imaginaries of the journalism construction having the audiovisual as center of these process.

SAVORING STEREOTYPES: EXPLORING ORIENTALIZED NARRATIVES THROUGH AMERICAN REACTIONS TO EAST ASIAN FOODS ON YOUTUBETyler Chan (18452739) 28 April 2024 (has links)

This study conducts a comprehensive multimodal analysis of online food reaction videos (OFRV), uploaded by Buzzfeed, featuring Americans consuming and engaging with East Asian foods. Employing social semiotic theory, Orientalism, and colonialist discourses as theoretical lenses, this research aims to discern how these videos contribute to narratives that perpetuate the orientalized view that East Asian culture is fundamentally different from American culture and examine how these narratives are constructed multimodally via the YouTube platform. The methodological approach involves moment analysis, multimodal transcription, and in-depth analysis of selected moments to unravel narrative patterns and the various multimodal methods employed. Findings reveal pervasive decontextualization, stigmatizing, and an us vs. them paradigm surrounding the food, which reinforces orientalized portrayals. The study identifies distinct narrative patterns such as savagery, strangeness, sickness, and fear surrounding representations of Asian food, highlighting the multifaceted ways these narratives are constructed. The term "gastronomic orientalism" emerges from the analysis, encapsulating the complex process by which these videos utilize food representation to create an oriental narrative. This paper not only illuminates the multimodal construction of gastronomic orientalism but also contributes to future research by introducing a qualitative analysis method. The findings from this research suggest that media producers should prioritize cultural sensitivity and inclusivity to counter othering narratives against Asians in online media. Additionally, it suggests that future studies delve into more diversified video content and incorporate quantitative methods to yield more generalizable findings on cultural representation narratives.
