Vertaalteoretiese benaderings by Kinderbybelvertaling

Thesis (MPhil (Afrikaans and Dutch))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this thesis the importance of knowledge about translation theories during the preparatory phase of a translation project is examined. Theorists agree that translated children’s literature in general and children’s Bibles in particular are transmitters of cultural and ideological norms, and that source texts are therefore to a greater or lesser degree manipulated when they are translated. This thesis is an attempt to ascertain in which ways insight into various translation theories regarding translation as manipulation as well as theories about Bible translation empowers a translator to deliver a functional target text in which she can motivate and defend her translation choices and strategies. For this reason manipulation theories, Venuti’s insights about domestication and foreignisation and the theories of Nida, Nord and Gutt about Bible translation are described. A particular translation project is then analysed by comparing the source text, the Read and Learn Bible by Eva Moore, with the target text, the Lees-en-Leer Bybel, to discover in which ways insight into the various translation theories can lead to a functional translation. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: In hierdie tesis word die belangrikheid van kennis omtrent vertaalteorieë tydens die voorbereidingsfase van ’n vertaalprojek ondersoek. Teoretici is dit eens dat vertaalde kinderliteratuur in die algemeen en Kinderbybels in die besonder draers is van kulturele en ideologiese norme, en dat brontekste daarom in mindere of meerdere mate herskryf word wanneer hulle vertaal word. Hierdie tesis is ’n poging om vas te stel in watter mate kennis van verskeie teorieë wat insigte lewer oor vertaling as herskrywing en ook vertaalteorieë wat meer spesifiek op Bybelvertaling fokus, ’n vertaler in die voorbereidingsfase in staat kan stel om uiteindelik ’n deurdagte produk te lewer waarin sy haar vertaalkeuses en -strategieë kan motiveer en verantwoord. Om dit te kan doen word eerstens die teorieë van die Manipulasieskool, Venuti se insigte oor domestikering en vervreemding en die teorieë van Nida, Nord en Gutt oor Bybelvertaling beskryf. Daarna word ’n gevallestudie van ’n vertaalprojek gedoen deur die bronteks, die Read and Learn Bible deur Eva Moore, en die doelteks, die Lees-en- Leer Bybel, te analiseer en vas te stel in watter mate kennis van die verskillende vertaalteorieë kan lei tot ’n funksionele vertaling.

Die vertaling van die Bybels-Hebreeuse kommunikasieleidraad hinneh in Afrikaanse Bybelvertaling : 'n verkennende studie

Thesis (MPhil (Ancient Studies)--University of Stellenbosch, 2009. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In the past, Bible translations sometimes suffered from inadequate theoretical and grammatical description, which interfered with consistent translation choices. Nowadays, however, development of translation theory and improved description of Biblical Hebrew cause more scientifically motivated translation options to be generated in a more consistent way. This study has as its point of departure for future Bible translations the translation model of Gutt’s direct and indirect strategies within the paradigm of Nord’s functionalist approach. According to Gutt first generation Bible readers can make use of indirect translations while serious Bible students prefer to come to their own conclusions about source texts. For that reason translators should provide all possible communicative clues from source texts to enable target readers to reach appropriate interpretations about its underlying message. Following an overview of a sample of previous Bible translations, three Afrikaans translations are discussed to examine whether previous translation approaches (sometimes assumed) have supplied an adequate theoretical basis for ensuring consistent translation choices. Nida’s influential dynamic-functional approach is discussed next. My hypothesis that past translation theory and the description of Biblical Hebrew grammar were not adequate to provide motivation for consistent translation options, is then tested during a comparative study of the translation of the communicative clue hinneh in three previous Afrikaans Bible translations. Gutt’s requirement for direct Bible translations, that all communicative clues should be translated, presupposes insight into translation theory and close co-operation between a Biblical-Hebrew and a translation expert. This requirement was tested and proved during this study. In accordance with the findings of this study recommendations are made to demonstrate some ways in which hinneh as example of other complicated communicative clues can be treated in future Afrikaans Bible translations. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Vorige Bybelvertalings het soms in die verlede gely onder onvoldoende vertaalkundige en taalkundige beskrywing wat vertaalkeuses bemoeilik het. Deesdae bring die ontwikkeling van vertaalkunde en die beter beskrywing van Bybels- Hebreeuse grammatika egter mee dat meer wetenskaplik begronde vertaalkeuses konsekwent uitgeoefen en gemotiveer kan word. Hierdie studie neem as uitgangpunt vir toekomstige Bybelvertaling die vertaalmodel van Gutt se direkte en indirekte strategieë binne die paradigma van Nord se funksionalistiese benadering. Volgens Gutt kan eerstegenerasielesers baat vind by ’n indirekte vertaling terwyl ernstige Bybelstudente verkies om self relevante afleidings uit brontekste te maak. Daarvoor moet vertalers alle kommunikasieleidrade moontlik uit die brontekste verskaf om doellesers te help om gepaste interpretasies te maak. Ná ’n historiese oorsig oor ’n aantal Bybelvertalings word Afrikaanse vertalings onder die loep geneem om te ondersoek of vorige (soms veronderstelde) teoretiese vertaalbenaderings die gewenste wetenskaplike begronding verskaf het om te verseker dat konsekwente vertaalkeuses gemaak is. Aandag word ook gegee aan die invloed van Nida se dinamies-funksionele vertaalstrategie op Afrikaanse Bybelvertalings. Die hipotese dat die vertaalteorie en die beskrywing van Bybels-Hebreeuse taalkunde nie genoegsame teoretiese begronding verskaf het vir vorige vertalers om konsekwente keuses uit te oefen nie, word voorts getoets deur ’n verkennende studie van die kommunikasieleidraad hinneh in drie Afrikaanse Bybelvertalings. Gutt se benadering vereis dat alle kommunikasieleidrade vertaal behoort te word in die geval van direkte vertalings. Daarom is ’n grondige kennis van die mees onlangse vertaalteorie asook voldoende beskrywing van Bybels-Hebreeuse grammatika noodsaaklik. Nord se voorstel vir noue samewerking tussen vertaalkundiges en brontaalkundiges vir Bybelvertaling is met hierdie studie proefondervindelik bewys. Na aanleiding van die bevindings van hierdie studie word voorstelle gemaak waarvolgens hinneh as eksemplaries van ander ingewikkelde kommunikasieleidrade hanteer kan word in toekomstige vertalings van die Bybel in Afrikaans.

Sola scriptura : die Skrifbeskouing in die Gereformeerde Kerke van Suid-Afrika sedert 1959 : ʼn dogmaties-historiese ondersoek / Christiaan Jooste

In the history of the Reformed Churches of South Africa (RCSA) great emphisis was placed on the notion to make decisions on the basis, and in accordance to the Scriptures. In spite of this notion, the church community of the RCSA stand in the midst of great tension regarding some decisions. In the fifty year period from the centenary festival in 1959 to the 150 year festival in 2009, assemblies of the church community were confronted with many objections to decisions regarding racial relations, the acceptance of the 1983-translation of the Bible in Afrikaans, the acceptance of the 2001-Psalter, the use of small cups in the Holy Communion and the role of women in the offices of deacon, elder and minister. The question that’s being addressed in this study is, if a shift in the RCSA’s view of Scripture took place. Chapter 2 gives an historical overview of the decisions that gave way to to the differences mentioned above. From the historical overview the aspects regarding the view of Scripture can be formulated. In chapter 3 the relation between the differences and the view of Scripture are examined. At first a short definition of the reformed view of Scripture are formulated. Hermeneutical and view of Scripture aspects of the raports of deputies and decisions of assemblies are tested according to the formulated definition of a reformed view of Scripture. Chapter 4 examines the influence that paradigm shifts had on the differences in the RCSA. Focus is placed on the influence of postmodernism on the one hand and fundamentalism on the other. Attention is also given to the stance of the RCSA on these two paradigms of thought with relation to the view of Scripture. In light of the reformed view of Scripture the postmodern approach to hermeneutics is discarded as well as the the fundamentalist view of Scripture. In spite of the reality of paradigmshifts, the raports of deputies and the decisions of assemblies does not reflect this reality. Chapter 5 tries to point a way out to handle the differences in the ligt of the Reformed view of Scripture. Focus is placed on the place the sociohistorical context holds in the revelationhistorical exegetical process. The chapter further investigates the relation between desicions on Scriptural grounds and the right to protest according to artical 31 of the Reformed Chrurchorder. Attention in given to so called ordinary cases ans essential cases. The notion that differences can be solved when dessicions is based on Scripture alone is put forward in this chapter. / Thesis (M.Th.
