This thesis attempts to illuminate some aspects of the most obscure period of Mahler's life by setting the known biographical facts into a broader social and musical framework. It concentrates not on Mahler himself, but on the environment in which he lived and worked as a child and youth. The opening chapter is a brief study of Mahler's background and childhood: the position of Jews in Austria during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the unusual ethnomusicological features of Mahler's early environment and musical life in Iglau during the 187Os. The remaining five chapters are concerned with Mahler's three years of study at the Vienna Conservatoire and the works he composed before and during his years as a student there. Previously neither the courses he attended at the Conservatoire nor the musicians he encountered have been the subject of serious scholarly attention and much new information about the nature of the composer's early studies and the music his contemporaries were writing has been assembled. In particular, the influence of one student, Hans Rott, on Mahler's mature compositions is examined in detail. This wide-ranging approach provides the basis for a fruitful re-examination of Mahler's early output, both lost and extant works. It leads to the identification of what may be a previously unrecognised orchestral work by Mahler, and to a re-assessment of the currently accepted dating of some of his early compositions. The appendices include lists of works by Franz Krenn, Mathilde von Kralik and Richard von Kralik, and a catalogue of works by Hans Rott, together with biographical notes on the non-musicians among Mahler's Viennese friends, and transcriptions and reproductions of unpublished compositions by Franz Krenn, Rudolf Krzyzanowski and Anton Krisper.

Margaret Ada Sutherland (1897-1984) is respected as one of the leading musicians in Australia in the twentieth century. She is widely recognised as having made significant contributions to the development of Australian musical composition and contemporary creative life. While a significant body of scholarly work has been completed on Sutherland and while it is varied in scope and purpose, to date, no study has been undertaken with a strong focus on the identification and examination of primary sources relating to Sutherland. Research on Sutherland and her creative life has been consistently hampered by problems such as numerous lacunae in the composer???s corpus of works and the transmission of errors from one study to the next. It is the thesis of this study that these problems can be addressed by a reevaluation of all previously-used primary documents as well as the study of newlyfound primary source material: returning to primary sources has uncovered a considerable amount of material, both by and about the composer, which has remained previously unexplored. In order to address omissions in Sutherland???s work list, the starting point for the current study is the compilation of a thorough catalogue of works which incorporates all known compositions by Sutherland. This catalogue is derived from the collation of comprehensive primary source material. Further to this, the close examination of extensive primary sources relating to Sutherland???s life and music provides insights into aspects of the contemporary musical network in which she worked and also into the particular problems she encountered as a female composer in a geographically isolated country. The diversity of her achievements is also illuminated. The resources used in this thesis provide the material which will enhance, augment, and sometimes offer new perspectives relating to the current understanding of Sutherland???s creative life. Thus, Sutherland???s contribution to Australian music can be more deeply understood.

<p>Trumpet repertoire listings currently available to the public are often unsuitable for music instructors as means of adequately selecting repertoire for their students. This thesis will first discuss shortcomings of current trumpet repertoire lists and how a new listing would better serve the purpose of selecting new and appropriate works. A repertoire database design is presented with its many features, both musical and bibliographical. Further, technical considerations and issues concerning the implementation of such a database are discussed.</p> <p> Works for trumpet by Canadian Prairie composers was chosen as a body of repertoire to be cataloged in the database, as a means of presenting a prototype and therefore of limiting the number of initial database entries. Listing only works accessible in libraries and other public holdings warrants that pieces will be available for performance by the database users. </p> <p> As the application of the proposed database to this specific body of repertoire demonstrates, the database will be helpful to trumpet instructors seeking repertoire for students, as well as professionals wishing to create varied programs for performances and recordings, which include Canadian Prairie trumpet repertoire.</p>
