Efficacy of handwashing as an aid in the control of rotavirus and Giardia transmission

Diarrhea caused by rotavirus and Giardia is a major health problem among children attending day-care centers because of inadequate personnel hygiene. Epidemiological evidence suggesting person-to-person transmission of enteric pathogens has long been recognized. This study was initiated to investigate the effectiveness of handwashing for the removal of rotavirus and Giardia from contaminated hands. The palms of participant hands were innoculated with approximately 103 Giardia cysts or 105 plaque forming units of rotavirus and the effect of washing using tap water alone, a liquid soap or a bar soap on their removal was assessed. Handwashing with liquid soap was found to be very effective in the removal of rotavirus and Giardia cysts as compared to washing with bar soap or tap water alone. The overall recovery of viruses in both bar soap and liquid soap was low (0.03-22.5%), probably due to virus inactivation by the detergent.

Sexual Preferences in Play Among Infants in a Day-Care Setting

This study investigates (1) whether infants in a day-care setting exhibit sexual preferences in the choice of a playmate, and (2) whether males exhibit more overt acts in play than do females. Eight male and eight female infants, attending a day-care center, paired by age (ages twelve to twenty-four months), were selected as subjects. Each of the sixteen children was observed for a ten-minute period on four separate days, over a two-week period, a total of forty minutes' observation time per child. No significant differences were found between male and female infants involving the preference of the sex of a playmate, or between male and female overt behaviors.

Corporate initiatives in providing child care services

This thesis explores the initiatives possible for corporations interested in providing child care services to their employees. It also attempts to explain why corporations are becoming increasingly interested in providing this benefit to employees.A needs assessment survey was designed to discover the child care related needs of employees and to determine how child care responsibilities impact the work environment. An exploratory study was conducted of a sample of employees (N=127) at General Telephone in Fort Wayne, Indiana.Most employees, parents and non-parents, in this sample believed that child care responsibilities adversely affected productivity within their company. They also felt that company-sponsored child care assistance could improve productivity. Using the chi-square test of significance, child care responsibilities were significantly related to increased rates of absenteeism, work interruptions and turnover. There was substantial interest among employees in a corporate sponsored child care center and/or financial assistance to reduce the cost of child care expenses.

The nature of verbal interactions with toddlers in child care centers

This study investigated the verbal interactions directed to toddlers within child care settings. The primary purpose of the study was to determine the quality of verbal interactions available to toddlers during natural, daily routines while attending child care; more specifically, to determine if a difference existed for toddlers developing typically versus those developing atypically. The participants included 36 toddlers (26 typical and 10 atypical) and 23 child care providers in four child care settings. Coded observations similar to those originally developed by Girolametto, Hoaken, Weitzman and Van Lieshout (2000a) in their work investigating patterns of adult-child interactions were utilized to gather the data. Data were gathered in naturally occurring daily routines such as free play, book sharing/reading, and gross motor/outdoor time. Data were organized into three broad categories – directives, interaction-promoting, and language modeling – based upon contribution to language development. These three dependent variables were analyzed using a negative binomial regression model. Results indicated no significant group differences of quality of verbal interactions used by care providers with toddlers developing typically versus toddlers developing atypically. The predominant form of verbal interaction available to all toddlers was directive in nature, contributing very little to language development. Interaction-promoting forms of verbal interaction which contribute most to language production occurred the least. Supplemental analysis was completed regarding providers’ degrees and years of experience related to utterance types used. This research, although based on a small sample size, supports a concern for quality of verbal interactions and language stimulation available to toddlers in child care settings and has implications for school readiness and academic success. / Department of Special Education
