Tools for the revision of a maintenance strategy for an explosives manufacturing plant, using asset management principles / A.B. LouwLouw, Andries Barnabas January 2009 (has links)
The research topic is: Tools for the revision of a maintenance strategy for an explosives
manufacturing plant, using asset management principles. This research has specific reference
to the SASOL Prillan plant based in SASOL, Sasolburg. The purpose of this research is to
identify tools for the revision of a maintenance strategy for an explosives manufacturing plant,
using asset management principles. These tools must be aimed to increase the proactive work
capacity index, Figure 3, and to identify and/or develop tools that can be used by the
engineering team of this explosives manufacturing plant to increase equipment reliability and
performance. In this research assets include people. The meaning and application of asset
management principles were researched and the tools needed to combine existing efforts and
future needs are discussed. The human element to ensure the successful implementation of an
asset management culture was researched and attributes of leaders and a change model is
presented. This research was done into the wider engineering management discipline and not
only maintenance.
The method used to gather data was by means of interviews of a sample group within this
organization. As this manufacturing unit makes use of subject matter experts, these support
functions and plant personnel that were not interviewed, were issued with questionnaires to
ensure that the sample group is a fair representation of the total manufacturing facility. To obtain
a holistic view of potential shortcomings within the current maintenance strategy, all disciplines
and levels within this operation were interviewed and commonalities of various asset
management models were determined and used to define existing problem areas. This data
was used to determine statistical correlations. The case study presented in Chapter 1 indicates
that there is a case for change that can improve the proactive work capacity index of the
engineering team. The results of this research confirm that there is in fact a real requirement to
increase spares accuracy, improve on technical training as well as a need to establish visual
performance indicators (dashboard) to measure overall equipment efficiency with the goal toTools for the revision of a maintenance strategy for an explosives manufacturing plant, using

increase equipment reliability and performance. The technical training referred to in this
research reflects on training of people on equipment after investment in new technology. The
current spares holding strategy is lacking equipment description accuracy.
Furthermore, it is recommended that the implementation of career paths and development plans
for individuals must be developed to create an environment of learning. The use of user status
information captured on the computerized maintenance management system (SAP R/3) can
add to the management of works orders and indicate where the focus must be to complete
overdue work orders. Open work orders should be used to manage expenditure, to measure
planning efficiency and to manage the cash flow of the business. The use of overall equipment
efficiency and engineering efficiency measures is recommended and must be visually displayed
on a “dashboard”. It was recommended that the engineering and operations personnel of this
manufacturing plant be trained in asset management principles and that balanced scorecards
are developed to ensure that the strategies of the various departments are aligned with the
business strategy.
Diagram 1 best illustrates the thinking and process flow of this research. The flow diagram
shows five distinct stages and the appropriate objectives and/ or elements that were considered.
The dissertation is also structured in this manner.

The French « Revenu de Solidarité Active » (RSA) generated a great deal of interest in the the scientific community, focused mainly on its impact on labor force participation and on working poor. In this context, the thesis looks for a critical assessment of the device: we show its inability to take over the contradictory position in which the beneficiaries are placed. Those are confronted with structurally difficult conditions for the exploitation of the labor force, and at the same time the RSA organizes, through various means, the centrality of employment. Firstly, the thesis discusses the categories of work, constructed by the critical Marxism of Moishe Postone and by Hannah Arendt. Thanks to this theoretical approach, we understand that the RSA redefines the beneficiaries' labour statuses, around a staging of the need for a return to work. Simultaneously, we show theoretically and empirically the contradictory position of work in contemporary capitalism: source of social wealth, certainly, but also undermined by increasingly difficult conditions for the exploitation of labor power. Secondly, we implement a follow-up of a cohort of beneficiary households in the department of Isère, between 2010 and 2012. Descriptive statistical analysis and the modeling of mobilities and trajectories lead us to show diversity of individual paths. In addition to the temporary uses of RSA, which constitute a majority, we note paths are broken, and when they show stability, it is often in labor market's margins. Finally, we show that the RSA fails to gather, behind employment as an uniform standard, the great diversity of beneficiaries.

Curriculum development for the master craftsman in the printing, newspaper and packaging industriesThomas, David Llewellyn, 1944- 01 1900 (has links)
This study centres on curriculum development for a master craftsman level in the Printing, Newspaper and
Packaging Industries which is didactically sound and takes cognisance of the dynamic vocational education
and training milieu in which it occurs. Curriculum and curriculum development is viewed from a systems
perspective and incorporates the specific andragogic didactic needs of the learner target group as well as
the unique needs of an industrial sector.
Because the National Qualification Framework model advocates an outcomes-based approach to
curriculum development this necessitated the identification of a suitable standards generating process to
articulate the master craftsman unit standards into a qualification capable of being recognised by the
National Qualification Framework. The nature and complexity of the underpinning knowledge, skills and
competencies for the master craftsman level were quantified and qualified by means of skills and
competency profiling and the development of a job outcome taxonomy of skills, knowledge and attributes
which incorporated critical cross field and fundamental skills, and their underpinning knowledge
requirements.
Using aspects ofvarious vocational education and training models and empirical research course content
was sourced, evaluated and developed into appropriate modules of learning that are congruent with the
accepted competency based modular training system used in the Industries. Course maps that integrate
theory and practice were developed with multi skilling milestones linked to learner certification.
Evaluation of resources for the delivery of the Master Craftsman Programme was facilitated by means of
a provider quality assessment and accreditation system. The interactive teaching-learning situation and the
evaluation processes and procedures were developed to enhance the assessment of applied competencies
in the world of work. A pilot study and unit standards generating activities are to be used as a means of
implementing and institutionalising the master craftsman curriculum.
The findings of this study revealed that by viewing the curriculum from a systems perspective and using a
suitable curriculum development model a creative master craftsman curriculum development process could
take place. The competency profiling technique and taxonomy of competencies, skills, knowledge and
attributes enabled the curriculum process to be a top-down approach which is outcomes-based. / Didactics / D.Ed. (Didactics)
