"Pegar primero: he ahí la ley" : Estereotipos de género en una obra de Oscar Castro / "To hit first: that’s the rule" : Gender stereotypes in one work of Oscar CastroCotal San Martín, Nirvana January 2016 (has links)

In Portugal, as in other countries, a common characteristic of many of the novels published in the past twenty years is the recourse to a repertoire of literary devices that recall those of the historical novel. On the basis of critical studies published in the 1990’s, and in particular Fernández Prieto’s Poética de la Novela Histórica, this thesis undertakes a study of the Portuguese historical novel with the aim of defining, to the extent possible, the limits of this literary genre, and to examine in detail some of its intrinsic—and pertinent—semantic and pragmatic traits: the setting of a fictional narrative in the past, the introduction of historical persons and events and, not the least, the transtextual relationship between the fictional and the historiographic text. Special attention is given to some of the more innovative forms of the contemporary historical novel, to highlight how by emphasising certain generic traits —that refer to the reader’s acquired knowledge— the author can compensate for the absence of others. Despite the inherent ”heterodoxy”, this device justifies grouping these novels under the general heading of the historical novel. The thesis explores the analogies between some of these innovative narrative strategies of the contemporary historical novel with transtextual practices characteristic of literature predating the 19th Century and by which a certain ”historical knowledge” is requisite for decoding the text. The thesis also establishes a set of generic traits that the historical novel shares with epic poetry. In light of these analogies, the thesis proposes a reading of Os Lusíadas as a historical poem. With this the author hopes to provide a contribution to a theory of historical fiction, understood as a genre encompassing, in addition to the novel, all forms of fictionalisation that rely on the historical discourse. © Mauro Cavaliere ISBN 91-7265-442-2

Projednávání amerických sankcí proti Kubě na půdě Valného shromáždění OSN / Discussion on US sanctions against Cuba at the U.N. General AssemblyŠplíchalová, Eva January 2015 (has links)
The United States imposed the longest lasting sanction regime on Cuba in 1960 as a result of strained relations in recent years. Each US administration modified form of the sanctions regime, depending on the attitude toward the Cuban issue. General Assembly, the highest authority of the UN, adopts not legally binding but politically significant resolutions. Resolution condemning US sanctions regime has been adopted annually since 1992. Discussion on changes of the sanction regime in the General Assembly is a sign of reflection on current events and unrigid process of resolutions adoption. The main purpose is to determine whether the changes of the sanction regime were mentioned in the discussions on the adoption of the resolutions. The result of the analysis shows the reflection of the events in the speeches of ambassadors. The amount of mentioned events in speeches depends whether they were positive or negative step toward easing the embargo, and also how important the event was.

Kubánské zahraniční mise v Africe v 60. letech 20. století a Československo / Cuban Missions in Africa during 1960s, and CzechoslovakiaKotrman, Václav January 2018 (has links)
1 Abstract A Group of revolutionaries led by Fidel Castro has been struggling to overthrow the Cuban President Fulgencio Batista since the half of 1950s. After they succeeded on New Year's Eve 1959 the Revolutionary Cuban Government changed strategy in all aspects of the state administration. One of the most visible change happened in the sector of foreign policy. Cuba began to act not only as a sovereign country in relation to the neighbouring states which led to the conflict with the United States, but also began to actively export her model of revolution. The main initiators in this turn were Ernesto "Che" Guevara and Fidel Castro. The first region where Havana attempted to export the revolution was Latin America. Nevertheless, all attempts failed during 1960s. At the same time, the process of decolonisation in Africa visited by Guevara in the middle of 1959 was in progress. In Egypt, he established his first contacts with revolutionary leaders and subsequently informed Havana about the situation. The socialist character of a number of revolutionary movements was close to Cubans, so they started to widen relationship with them. First aid to Africa was sent by Cuban government at the end of 1961 to Algeria which fought for independence on France since 1954. Strengthening of relations between Havana and...

This work has for purpose to discuss the School Groups as space to become subjective and cultivation of the power to discipline; to analyze the characteristic aspects expressed in the biopolitic established by the State starting from the curriculum proposed by the educational reforms contained in de Federal Constitution of 1946, in the Ordinance-law no. 8529 and 8530 of January of 1946, in de Federal Constitution of 1967 and in the Law of Guidelines and Bases of the Brazilian Education (LDB) Law no. 4024/61; to identify the devices pedagogic of confirmation to the process of educational to become the teaching subjective. The subjects that put in motion of this walk are the following ones: How did the School Groups cultivate in your space the process to become subjective and discipline power? How did the curriculum biopolitic conform that process? What pedagogic devices did influence in the process to become subjective the educational work in Teacher Manoel Antonio de Castro Group School? It is a study of bibliographical and documental character. With support in the analysis of official documents of the public files of institutions as: City hall, Municipal and State Public File, Union of the professionals of Education of the Municipal distric and the Files of the Secretary of GEPMAC. The research happened in the historical period from 1940 to 1970, time of establishment of the Constitutions Federal of 1946 and 1967, of the Ordinance-law no. 8929 of the primary teaching and no. 8930 regarding the normal school and of the educational reform originating from of the Law of no. 4024 of 1961, besides to talk about the three ex-teachers of the School Group that were part of the analysis of this work. The study was based theoretically in Philosopher Michel Foucault’s writings of which it was used the analytic tools the can/to know relationships that it involves the analysis of the speech, relationships of can and the process to become subjective simultaneously. Starting from those analyses we considered that the history of the Brazilian education was and it is predominantly addressed by that Foucault calls superior administration starting from speeches of truths. Although the State intervenes in the social control of the education and of the educational work, these subjects are not hostages of the actions idealized in the ambit of the official power, because in your practices and involvement with the pedagogic devices execute institutional demands, but also, they react to them, be ignoring them or reacting or repelling the state action.

Tension under the Sun: Tourism and Identity in Cuba, 1945-2007Gustavsen, John Andrew 24 August 2009 (has links)
My dissertation on Cuban tourism links political, economic, social, and cultural history to show how the development of tourism on the island between 1945 and 2007 has been crucial in helping to cultivate identities for Cuba and the Cuban people on multiple levels. I focus on three distinct periods - 1945 to 1958, 1959 to 1979, and 1980 to 2007. While significant shifts occurred within each of these three phases, this periodization best illuminates the relationship between tourism development and identity. The fall of the Soviet Union, for example, certainly altered the pace of the industry's growth. Arrivals soared beginning in the 1990s, yet much of the institutional framework for conditioning the relationships between touristic actors had been established years earlier. Cuban planners had begun to target a range of specific markets by 1980, over a decade before the economic strife of the 'Special Period' in the early 1990s virtually forced them to move in this direction. For the entire period between 1945 and 2007, tourism and Cuban identity were linked in two very important ways. Tourism provided a lens for foreign visitors to view the island, its people, and its culture; to know what it meant to be Cuban. As well, the industry offered a framework for powerful interests to control the behaviors of Cuban citizens; to instruct them on how to be Cuban.

¡Hasta la utopía siempre! : conflicting utopian ideologies in Havana’s late socialist housing market / Conflicting utopian ideologies in Havana's late socialist housing marketGenova, Jared Michael 26 April 2013 (has links)
Through the broader contextualization of ethnographic fieldwork in Havana’s newly reformed housing market, this study theorizes the Cuban late socialist condition through a lens of utopian ideological conflict. A popular narrative of free market utopia has emerged in the face of the state’s recalcitrant ideology of state socialism. The popular narrative is reproduced through growth in the informal economy, while the socialist utopian narrative is maintained by the ubiquity of its bureaucratic apparatus. Inspired by postmodern theorist Jean Baudrillard’s Simulacra and Simulation (1994), this thesis theorizes the Cuban state narrative as an ideological simulation, supported only through its strongest simulacrum – the government bureaucracy.
Previous work on Cuba has cited the importance of access to government-purchased goods to fuel the informal economy and individual wealth accumulation. This study highlights the reproduction of a narrative of free market utopia in the desire for access to transactions as intermediaries, particularly as the deals increase in hard currency value. The passage of Decreto-Ley Number 288, which authorized the buying and selling of homes has served to rapidly capitalize the market and encourage further development of an informal network of brokers. Greater economic hybridization in the housing sector, among others, is gradually eroding the totalizing nature of the state’s socialist utopia. / text

A Parametric Model of the Portuguese NauCook, Charles 2011 December 1900 (has links)
This interdisciplinary research project combines the fields of nautical archaeology and computer visualization in order to create an interactive virtual reconstruction of a Portuguese nau. Information about the shipbuilding process is gathered from 16th and 17th century treaties by Fernando Oliveira and Joao Batista Lavanha, as well as from Dr. Filipe Castro (Texas A&M Department of Anthropology). Eight registered tonnage formulas from the 15th to 17th century are used to estimate the cargo capacity of the nau. Using this information, I develop an algorithm that creates a parametric computer model of a nau hull and calculates its registered tonnage. This parametric model allows the user to choose between the Oliveira and Lavanha hull shapes, adjust parameters to fine tune the hull shape further, and save the information about the hull shape for future editing. The eight registered tonnage estimates are compared to the volume of the parametric hull model below a generic waterline.
The process I use to adapt the information provided by the two shipbuilding treatises into an algorithm determines the hull shape of a nau. This allows for projects in the future to introduce other shipbuilding approaches and information as it becomes available to this parametric model.
