Return temperature influence of a district heating network on the CHP plant production costsSallent, Roger January 2009 (has links)
The aim of this Project is to study the influence of high return temperatures in district heating on the costs for heat and power production in a CHP plant. When the temperatures of the water coming back to the heating plant are so high, the overall performance of heat and power production is decreased and, consequently, also the production costs. Along the project, the influence of this temperature on the different parts of a CHP plant are analysed as well as the economical impact it has. At the same time, some general impacts on the entire network are mentioned. A real network is used in this project, and it is the net of district heating in Gävle (Sweden), and the most of the study is focus in its bigger combined heat and power production plant (CHP), called Johannes.

Optimal design and integration of solar systems and fossil fuels for process cogenerationTora, Eman Abdel-Hakim Aly Mohamed 15 May 2009 (has links)
Because of the fluctuations in incident solar power, outlet power also changes over
time (e.g., on an hourly basis or seasonally). If there is a need for a stable power outlet,
there are options towards a steady state output of the system. This work is aimed at the
development of systematic design procedures for two solar-based power generation
strategies.
The first is integration of fossil-fuel with the solar system to provide a compensation
effect (power backup to supplement the power main source from solar energy).
The second is the use of thermal energy storage (TES) systems to save solar energy
in a thermal form and use it when solar input decreases. A common TES configuration is
the two-tank system which allows the use of the collector heat transfer fluid (HTF) as a
storing medium. For the two tanks, one tank has the hot medium (e.g., a molten salt) and
the second has the cold storage media.
Specifically, the following design challenges are addressed:
1. What is the optimal mix of energy forms to be supplied to the process? 2. What are the optimal scenario and integration mode to deliver the selected energy
forms? How should they be integrated among themselves and with the process?
3. What is the optimal design of the energy systems?
4. What is the optimal dynamic strategy for operating the various energy systems?
5. What is the feasibility of using thermal energy storage to this optimum fossil fuel
system?
The developed procedure includes gathering and generation of relevant solar and
climatic data, modeling of the various components of the solar, fossil, and power
generation systems, and optimization of several aspects of the hybrid system. A case
study is solved to demonstrate the effectiveness and applicability of the devised
procedure.

Heat and Power Applications of Advanced Biomass Gasifiers in New Zealand's Wood Industry A Chemical Equilibrium Model and Economic Feasibility AssessmentRutherford, John Peter January 2006 (has links)
The Biomass Integrated Gasification Application Systems (BIGAS) consortium is a research group whose focus is on developing modern biomass gasification technology for New Zealand's wood industry. This thesis is undertaken under objective four of the BIGAS consortium, whose goal is to develop modelling tools for aiding in the design of pilot-scale gasification plant and for assessing the economic feasibility of gasification energy plant. This thesis presents a chemical equilibrium-based gasification model and an economic feasibility assessment of gasification energy plant. Chemical equilibrium is proven to accurately predict product gas composition for large scale, greater than one megawatt thermal, updraft gasification. However, chemical equilibrium does not perform as well for small scale, 100 to 150 kilowatt thermal, Fast Internally Circulating Fluidised Bed (FICFB) gasification. Chemical equilibrium provides a number of insights on how altering gasification parameters will affect the composition of the product gas and will provide a useful tool in the design of pilot-scale plant. The economic model gives a basis for judging the optimal process and the overall appeal of integrating biomass gasification-based heat and power plants into New Zealand's MDF industry. The model is what Gerrard (2000) defines as a 'study estimate' model which has a probable range of accuracy of ±20% to ±30%. The modelling results show that gasification-gas engine plants are economically appealing when sized to meet the internal electricity demands of an MDF plant. However, biomass gasification combined cycle plants (BIGCC) and gasificationgas turbine plants are proven to be uneconomic in the New Zealand context.

January 2008 (has links)
Abstract: The pulp and paper sector is intensive in the use of energy, and presents a high participation in industrial context, specially based in renewable source produced as byproduct in the pulp process. Although the black liquor gasification (BLG) is not a completely dominated technology, it has the potential of becoming an important alternative for the pulp and paper sector, once the burning of BLG in gas turbines should guarantee higher efficiencies, better use of the available renewable resources, also allowing the chemical recovery, just as is done nowadays with Tomlinson chemical recovery steam generations. In this dissertation, an analysis of the pulp and paper sector will be developed identifying its energy and environmental participation in the context of the national matrix. Based on the Rankine cycle, considered as the current state of knowledge, an energetic and exergetic analysis of a cogeneration system based on BLG system associated to gas turbine, heat recovery steam generator and backpressure steam turbine with extractions will be developed. The proposed scheme will be developed to produce electric/mechanical power and two pressure steam for guaranteeing better operational conditions comparatively to the traditional system. / Mestre

. / This work considers a transition scenario from fossil combustible energy and the restrict usage of renewable sources, specially biomass, just because water and eolic sources depend on their availability, and solar energy usage depends on technological improvements . During this transition, it is important to optimize traditional cycles that use diesel oil and natural gas, for minimizing the impact on natural reserves and environment, increasing the existing time schedule for changes, if necessary. After describing some advanced cycles, this study evaluates in more detail the usage of steam injection cycle (STIG) burning natural gas, applicable to two natural gas production plant, considering the comparison between Rankine and Brayton conventional cycles. This analysis is focused mainly in natural gas Compression Units due to the great emphasis that it has nowadays, with the necessity of increasing the gas pipeline. In this thesis, the cycles are analyzed considering the project part-load and over-load conditions, explaining why there are thermodynamic modeling to be integrated to computer programs to generate informations for a simulation closer to the real operational condition. In the simulation fuel and equipment prices, maintenance costs and, in a simple way, the potential return of investments coming from carbon dioxide credits sales were considered. Proposal goals from this study include new thermodynamic modelling applicable to the studied cycles and its simulation, considering partial load operation, offering the sparse technical and economic data in an organized way. After ending the study it was possible to conclude that the part load operation must be considered and that the oil and gas installation have a potential in energy savings.

Waste from processing sugar cane (bagasse and trash) has become an important energy source. Trash can be added to the bagasse and both can be burned in the boilers of the mills, as source for the cogeneration of electricity in the sugar cane industry. “São Manoel” sugarcane mill, located in São Manuel – São Paulo state, uses trash as fuel for boilers in its cogeneration system, generating energy for its operations. The bagasse produced is not completely used, and the surplus is sold to mills and other companies in the region. This study aimed at checking the cogeneration potential of such mill by considering the use of the residual biomass (bagasse and trash) of the available sugar cane. This way, trash productivity was determined (20 t/ha), which was separated into green leaves (14.9%), dry leaves (71.3%), and remaining material (stalks, pointers and extraneous matter) (8.3%). The content of mineral impurities present in the samples of trash collected was 5.4%. The content of trash humidity was measured for each constituent and the average final score was 28.7%. The bagasse presented average humidity of 49.81%. The higher heating value (HHV) was determined for the bagasse (19.27 MJ.kg-1), trash (17.90 MJ.kg-1) and mixings of bagasse+trash in different proportions. For lower heating value (LHV), it was noted that for the trash, the energy released (12.11 MJ.kg-1) was higher than for the bagasse (8.55 MJ.kg-1), which was expected once bagasse has a higher humidity content. From the mixings analyzed, the 50%-50% one presented a higher energy potential (LHV of 10.08 MJ.kg-1), which shows that trash can be efficient in energy production when mixed to bagasse once necessary adaptations have been made both in the procedure and machinery. In the 2008 crop, the energy which could be created using the residual biomass, supposing that all the sugar cane was picked raw, would be 227,989 MWh,... / One of the most important questions regarding to the cogeneration issue is the cost definition obtained through the operation of a certain configuration as a form to guarantee the viability of a certain enterprise. From the viewpoint of power systems modeling, there is currently a tendency of developing analysis based on the Second Law of Thermodynamics, once it considers the economic value of inputs and also of the products on a basis that takes into account the irreversibility of each flow. On the other hand, the models based on the First Law of Thermodynamics does not distinguish this part of the flows, hiding the real contribution of each one. In this dissertation it can be identified the real investment amount, operation, and maintenance on the main components of a combined cycle associated to an absorption cooling system and its equations based on energetic and exergy analysis concepts for an afterwards cost analysis based on different methodologies in order to state their advantages and disadvantages on cogeneration applications. Through the current study it is possible to consider a real evaluation using the data, which was obtained with some suppliers, based on traditional economic analysis models, in such a way that is possible to compare some of the cost allocation models described on the classic literature.

With the human advances observed since the pre-historic ages have grown the needing of more and more quantities of energy to feed the development of the civilizations and their production ways. Nowadays, a big part of the world energetic demand is obtained from unrenewable energy sources, that means sources of energy formed naturally during a time so much longer than their consumption velocity, being possible to become exhausted, moreover undesirable products are generated and environmental impacts are caused by their utilization. The present work studies an aplication of a renewable source of energy in small villages or properties. The general objective is the obtainment of an energetic product from the biomass, to supply the local energy needings (broiler chicken farm), employing an adequate transformation process. To make the biomass energy profit, looking for the benefit of the place where the biomass is available, two technologies of are presented and compared as regards the quantity and kind of produced energy, the quantity and kind of necessary energy in the place, the possibility of the utilization of a cogeneration system to satisfy the local conditions, the costs of the investment and the pay-back period.
