A framework for electricity generation opportunities in the South African integrated iron and steel industry : the ArcelorMittal Newcastle case / Marais, B.

Marais, Brendan January 2011 (has links)
Electricity availability and the costs thereof in South Africa were traditionally considered an abundant and low cost commodity, but in recent years this situation has changed altogether. Industries are challenged by a strained national electricity grid and tariff increases more than four times the national inflation rate over the past two years, with further tariff increases expected in subsequent years; thus, exposing industries to significant business risks that may jeopardise the sustainability of industries. With the majority of the national electricity supply derived from coal, South Africa's push to reduce carbon emissions exerts even more pressure on industries as electricity usage is inextricably linked to its carbon footprint. In addition, South Africa's reliance on cogeneration from industries for its 2010 - 2030 electricity capacity plan further promotes industries to become more self–sufficient concerning electricity generation. In view of the above, there is a need in the South African integrated iron and steel industry for a framework that collectively addresses the governing factors pertaining to electricity generation in this industry, technical and economical quantification of available technologies and implementation of these technologies. This dissertation researches the current driving/governing and the remediating factors to become more self–sufficient in terms of electricity generation. A framework for electricity generation opportunities in the integrated iron and steel industry is developed from the literature study and the researcher's own experience. The framework embodies four building blocks into a single and all–encompassing framework, which provides the necessary governing factors that quantify the potential need to pursue electricity generation/cogeneration, the technical and economical implications and, inevitably, the implementation requirements and guidelines. Validating the framework against case studies pertaining to ArcelorMittal Newcastle realised a correlation of between 84.6% to 97.6% concerning the technical parameters. In addition, the validation process also indicated that the framework is aligned with current practices applied by ArcelorMittal South Africa. The framework will enable South African integrated iron and steel industries to expand and adapt their own procedures to be specific to their operational requirements. The implementation of the framework should be tailored to address the specific needs concerning cogeneration in industry. / Thesis (M.Ing. Integration of Combined Heat and Power Generators into Small Buildings - A Transient Analysis Approach

DeBruyn, Adrian Bryan January 2006 (has links)
Small combined heat and power generators have the potential to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions of residential buildings. Recently, much attention has been given to these units. To date, the majority of studies in this field have concentrated on the steady operational performance of a specific generator type, and the available computer models have largely been theoretical in nature.

The main goal of this study was to evaluate the performance of the latest combined heat and power generators, when integrated into Canadian residential homes. A fair comparison of four 1 kW (electrical) units was made. The combined heat and power units studied were based on PEM fuel cell, solid oxide fuel cell, Stirling Engine, and internal combustion engine energy converters.

This study utilized recent test data in an attempt to evaluate the most efficient method of integrating the combined heat and power units into residential houses. Start-up, shut down, and load change transients were incorporated into the simulations. The impact of load variations due to building thermal envelope differences and varying building heating system equipment was evaluated. The simulations were evaluated using TRNSYS software. The building heat demands were determined with eQuest hourly building simulation software.

All of the combined heat and power units under study were capable of providing a net annual benefit with respect to global energy and greenhouse gas emissions. The fuel cells offer the highest integrated performance, followed closely by the internal combustion engine and lastly the Stirling engine. Annual global energy savings up to 20%, and greenhouse gas savings up to 5. 5 tonnes per year can be achieved compared to the best conventional high efficiency appliances.

Heat demand influences performance greatly. As the thermal output of the generator unit approaches half of the average building thermal demand, the system design becomes critical. The system design is also critical when integrating with a forced air furnace. Only the PEM fuel cell unit produces clear global energy and emissions benefits when operating in the summertime.

[en] MODELING OF OFFSHORE PRODUCTION OF COLD, HEAT AND ELECTRICAL POWER / [pt] MODELAGEM DA PRODUÇÃO SIMULTÂNEA DE FRIO, CALOR E ENERGIA ELÉTRICA

YIPSY ROQUE BENITO 11 December 2007 (has links)
[en] The present work embodies two studies: a global analysis of cogeneration systems and an absorption refrigeration cycle model. The first study presents the main equations for energy and exergy balances of a cogeneration system operating with two distinct prime movers (a gas turbine and an internal combustion engine, both powered by diesel oil). For cooling production, an absorption chiller, driven by the prime movers` waste heat, and an auxiliary vapor compression chiller are employed. The energy and exergy balance equations were applied to each component of the system, composing a non-linear system of algebraic equations whose solution provides the performance of the system under different operating conditions. The second study is part of a broader project aiming at the development of an absorption refrigeration system. A mathematical model is presented, describing a small-size absorption refrigeration installation employing a water-ammonia mixture as working fluid. Mass and energy conservation equations were applied to each component of the cycle. Thermodynamic properties of the working fluids were calculated at each point of the cycle. Also, simplifying assumptions were applied. The resulting model was applied to simulate the behavior of an existing system. Comparison of predicted results with experimental data was satisfactory. A parametric analysis was also carried out with the simulation model. The models of both studies were implemented in ESSA software. Simulations were carried out so as to analyze the systems under particular operational conditions and to assess the influence of the main variables on system performance.

[en] PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF THE CO-GENERATON POTENCIAL OF A 5 KW PEMFC / [pt] ANÁLISE DE DESEMPENHO DE UMA CÉLULA DE COMBUSTÍVEL TIPO PEM DE 5 KW COM REFORMADOR DE GÁS NATURAL E COGERAÇÃO

ALESSANDRO LAMA 16 May 2007 (has links)
[en] A 5 kW proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) with a reformer has been installed and tested at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio), Brazil, aiming the experimental determination of its performance and co-generation potential to increase the fuel chemical energy usage. The unit uses a fuel processor to convert energy from natural gas into hydrogen rich reformate. The fuel cell is totally instrumented, supplying data for calculating the overall system efficiency (total efficiency), reformer efficiency, stack efficiency, conversion efficiency (DC/AC), and co- generation potential, at previously set up output powers of 2,5 kW. This study details the equations required for calculating the parameters, both theoretically, from thermodynamics and electrochemics points of view, and experimentally, from mass and energy balances, comparing the results. Steady state data were taken, resulting in reformer, stack, conversion and total average efficiencies, together with the calculated standard deviation. It was also found that the energy loss in the reformer and in the stack are approximately the same. It was also showed that the reformer and stack degradation reduce the system life, which also has an efficiency lower what is stated by the manufacturer. The fuel chemical energy usage potential was estimated by calculating the heat rejected by the stack and the heat rejected in the reformer, giving a value of 71,3%.

Vicente, Décio Tomasulo de 31 October 2011 (has links)
The aims of this study are to present and to evaluate the design of a substation, focusing on the sharing of the installation, equipments, and particularly on the information between transmission and distribution energy companies. This will highlight implications for data access security, along with the security concerning maintenance and operation of a substation and the division of technical responsibilities. The need for this type of project is becoming common in the state of São Paulo as the access to the transmission system by thermal power plants of sugar companies increases, in accordance with the normative resolutions of the Agência Nacional de Energia Elétrica. The study proposes the configuration of supervision and protection functions using exchange of information between agents via priority messaging service provided by IEC 61850 instead of the auxiliary relays and panel interface that uses copper wires. When connecting two communication networks of different companies while considering safety as the main issue, simulations are conducted to evaluate protection logic operations, data access and supervision data exchange. Certain technologies presented here are already widely used in Information Technology, such as the cyber security requirements. When utilized in IEC 61850 based systems without significantly impacting performance and costs, these cyber security requeriments present great advantages for the substations digitalized systems. Finally, differences and benefits are considered for the use of the resources of the norm for such a particular project.

January 2011 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: Waste from processing sugar cane (bagasse and trash) has become an important energy source. Trash can be added to the bagasse and both can be burned in the boilers of the mills, as source for the cogeneration of electricity in the sugar cane industry. "São Manoel" sugarcane mill, located in São Manuel - São Paulo state, uses trash as fuel for boilers in its cogeneration system, generating energy for its operations. The bagasse produced is not completely used, and the surplus is sold to mills and other companies in the region. This study aimed at checking the cogeneration potential of such mill by considering the use of the residual biomass (bagasse and trash) of the available sugar cane. This way, trash productivity was determined (20 t/ha), which was separated into green leaves (14.9%), dry leaves (71.3%), and remaining material (stalks, pointers and extraneous matter) (8.3%). The content of mineral impurities present in the samples of trash collected was 5.4%. The content of trash humidity was measured for each constituent and the average final score was 28.7%. The bagasse presented average humidity of 49.81%. The higher heating value (HHV) was determined for the bagasse (19.27 MJ.kg-1), trash (17.90 MJ.kg-1) and mixings of bagasse+trash in different proportions. For lower heating value (LHV), it was noted that for the trash, the energy released (12.11 MJ.kg-1) was higher than for the bagasse (8.55 MJ.kg-1), which was expected once bagasse has a higher humidity content. From the mixings analyzed, the 50%-50% one presented a higher energy potential (LHV of 10.08 MJ.kg-1), which shows that trash can be efficient in energy production when mixed to bagasse once necessary adaptations have been made both in the procedure and machinery. In the 2008 crop, the energy which could be created using the residual biomass, supposing that all the sugar cane was picked raw, would be 227,989 MWh,...

Costa, Marcius Xavier Rodrigues da, 1971- January 2011 (has links)
Quanto menor a impureza mineral, menor abrasividade no processamento do palhiço, desde o preparo... Considering envaironmental and agricuture aspects, the use of sugar cane trash becames a atractive business. At the same way according betwing sugar cane produtors in São Paulo States have a target for 100% harvister burn elimination until 2017, the possibilities of sics with trash take away under soil and low productive of new plant to next season. With focus in quality of the trash received at industry, the subjective of this study it was analise properties of sugar cane trash used to eletrical energy cogeneration in a Mill industrial plant, about 100.000 tons of cane sugar trash processed during the study. The properties studied was moisture, mineral contents and calorific power. Addedly it was analise the influence of pluviometric indice in the sugar cane trash. About tecnical and economic aspects, it is important to industry decreese impacts of mineral contents and moisture. How many low is the mineral content, less abrasivity conditions in the process, since trash prepar thruthly burnnig until ash discharge in the boiler, resulting in betther equipament conservation and less solids dust. How many low is the moisture, means high prouctive in the cut operation in trash prepar, and higther is the trash calorific power. The statistical correlation showed low relavance betwen mineral content and trash moisture than indicate that there are agronomic factors of soil and/or harvester process that determine mineral content independent of trash moisture in the trash delivered at industry / Mestre
