Fluorescence and Adaptation of Color Images

Color plays a vitally important role in the world we live in. It surrounds us everywhere we go. Achromatic life, restricted to black, white and grey, is extremely dull. Color fascinates artists, for it adds enormously to aesthetic appreciation, directly invoking thoughts, emotions and feelings. Color fascinates scientists. For decades, scientists in color imaging, printing and digital photography have striven to satisfy increasing demands for accuracy in color reproduc- tion. Fluorescence is a very common phenomenon observed in many objects such as gems and corals, writing paper, clothes, and even laundry detergent. Traditional color imaging algo- rithms exclude fluorescence by assuming that all objects have only an ordinary reflective com- ponent. The first part of the thesis shows that the color appearance of an object with both reflective and fluorescent components can be represented as a linear combination of the two components. A linear model allows us to separate the two components using independent component analysis (ICA). We can then apply different algorithms to each component, and combine the results to form images with more accurate color. Displaying color images accurately is as important as reproducing color images accurately. The second part of the thesis presents a new, practical model for displaying color images on self-luminous displays such as LCD monitors. It shows that the model accounts for human visual system’s mixed adaptation condition and produces results comparable to many existing algorithms.

Comparison Of Microwave Drying And Microwave Mixed-bed Drying Of Red Peppers

The main objective of this work is to investigate whether the time required to dry red peppers in the diffusion controlled period can be reduced. For this purpose, the possibility of microwave drying in this period was studied. As comparison parameters the drying rates and color of the products were selected. The conventional drying was conducted under constant external drying conditions with air at 60 0C and 3.5 % RH and 1.0 m/s velocity in a batch dryer. For the microwave drying a domestic microwave oven with three power levels, 286, 397 and 560 W was used. Pre-experiments were done to obtain an insight on the possibility of moisture distribution within the structure of the red peppers and electrical field distribution inside the oven cavity. The non-uniformity due to the latter effect was tried to be overcome by designing and installing a six blade impeller into the bed having the symmetrical pair of blades fixed at three levels. Samples for the microwave drying experiments were prepared by drying the peppers from approximately 90% of moisture to 20% in 7 hours in the conventional dryer at 600C and then cutting them into pieces about 1x1 cm. Thus prepared samples were dried further in the microwave oven to 14% moisture content without and with the agitator. To compare the results, the effective diffusivity coefficients were calculated for all of the methods and parameters to enable the aimed comparison. These indicated that by using microwave drying, the drying time can be reduced by about 120 times. Further, by mixing the uniformity of drying and the drying rate could be improved. Considering color of the product, there was no significant difference with respect to the fresh samples after all operations.

<p>The objective of this study was to assess coronal discoloration due to four commonly used endodontic sealers with gutta-percha, using spectrophotometric analysis. Extracted human teeth were obturated with the experimental sealers and GP. The sealers that were tested included AH Plus, EndoRez, and Kerr Pulp Canal Sealer. The teeth were maintained in a moist environment at 37 C. Immediate pretreatment readings of the crowns of the extracted teeth with a spectrometer were used as baseline data. Subsequent readings were taken every two weeks for two months. Results were analysed using Wilcoxson Signed Rank sum test and Kruskal Wallis test.</p>

Maturation of the transient chromatic (L-M) visual evoked potential: insights from linear and nonlinear analysis.

Introduction: Psychophysical and electrophysiological techniques have shown that chromatic contrast sensitivity improves between infancy and adolescence. In adults, electrophysiological and psychophysical methods usually agree. However, in infants electrophysiological techniques may underestimate ability to see chromatic contrast (Suttle et al., 2002). It is not known if the discrepancy between electrophysiological and psychophysical methods continues during childhood nor whether the chromatic VEP can be used as an indicator of colour perception in children. Purpose: To investigate the transient L-M chromatic visual evoked potential and its ability to indicate perception (psychophysical thresholds) of chromatic stimuli in children and adults. In particular, to determine whether a discrepancy between VEP and psychophysical L-M thresholds exists during childhood and if so, to gain some understanding about the nature of the discrepancy. Methods: Transient chromatic VEPs were recorded in children (aged 4.5-13 years) and adults (aged 20-40 years). VEP thresholds were compared with psychophysical thresholds (within-subjects comparison). Because the VEPs of the children were less intra-individually repeatable in morphology than those of the adults, post-hoc objective analysis of the VEPs, linear (Fourier) and nonlinear dynamical (Grassberger and Procaccia's (1983) correlation dimension) analyses, was conducted. Results: VEP and psychophysical estimates of chromatic contrast thresholds agreed using a variety of methods in the adults. In the children, however, the objective methods of assessment (extrapolation from Fourier-derived amplitudes and the correlation dimension) were more accurate than the methods that employed subjective evaluations of VEP morphology. Conclusion: The L-M transient chromatic VEPs of both children (aged 4.5-13 years) and adults appear to contain chromatic information, even in the absence of repeatable VEP morphology and should therefore be able to indicate chromatic perception (psychophysical thresholds). However, the chromatic information may be present as a nonlinear dynamical signal, which may require objective methods (Fourier analysis, the correlation dimension) to reveal the chromatic signal. The greater intra-individual variability of VEP morphology in children compared to adults may reflect poorer precision when switching between cortical states in children's brains. Alternatively, interactions between the immature visual system of the children and their general EEG may occur. Children's VEPs should therefore be interpreted differently to adult VEPs.

Sea Turtles and the Environmental Management of Industrial Activities in North West Western Australia

The nesting demographics of sea turtles using beaches within the Barrow, Lowendal, Montebello (B-L-M) island complex on the North West Shelf of Western Australia were examined in the context of their spatial and temporal distribution and potential for exposure to industrially based artificial light sources. The distribution of overnight turtle tracks throughout the island complex confirmed high density nesting of Chelonia mydas (green turtles) on deep, sandy and high energy beaches and Natator depressus (flatback turtles) on deep, sandy and low energy beaches, while Eretmochelys imbricata (hawksbill turtle) tracks were most visible on shallow, sandy beaches adjacent to near shore coral reef habitat. The three species exhibited a summer nesting peak. Hawksbill turtles commenced nesting in September and continued through to January, green turtles commenced in November and decreased in March. Flatback turtles displayed the most constrained nesting season reported to date in Australia with 86% of the animals visits recorded in December and January only. Nesting population sizes estimated for the three species suggest that on a national scale the B-L-M complex is a moderately large green turtle and a large flatback rookery site. The hawksbill rookery is large on an international scale. While none of the green turtle nesting beaches fell within a 1.5 km radius of industrially based artificial light sources an estimated 42% of nesting flatback turtles and 12% of nesting hawksbill turtles were potentially exposed to these light sources. Testing of green turtle and hawksbill hatchling response to different wavelengths of light indicate that hatchlings from the B-L-M region respond to low wavelength much like hatchlings tested in North America (Witherington 1992a). Flatback hatchlings displayed a similar preference for low wavelength light however their responses to discrete light wavelengths between 400 nm and 700 nm suggest that this species may not discriminate well between wavelengths that lie between 450 nm and 550 nm. This response may be related to the rapid attenuation of visible light that occurs in the turbid near shore habitats favoured by this species. Field based arena studies carried out to investigate hatchling behaviour on nesting beaches with light types commonly used in industrial settings found green turtle and flatback hatchlings are significantly attracted to these lights compared to controls. Lights that emit strongly in the low wavelength range (i.e. metal halide and fluorescent) caused hatchling misorientation at lower intensities than the test light that emitted relatively poorly in this range (high pressure sodium vapour). Hawksbill hatchlings tested in situ under the influence of actual oil and gas onshore and offshore facility based lighting were disrupted from the most direct line to the ocean by these light emissions. Emergence fan mapping methods that measure hatchling orientation on nesting beaches were refined and are proposed as an alternative monitoring tool for use on beaches that are logistically difficult to access for large scale experimental orientation studies. The hatchling behaviour was clearly complicated by beach topography and moon phase. Satellite tracking of post nesting female green and hawksbill turtles from North West Shelf rookeries has identified the Western Australian location of migratory corridors and foraging grounds for these species while Scott Reef turtles migrate from their south Timor Sea rookery to Northern Territory waters. Green turtle nesting on Barrow Island and Sandy Island (Scott Reef) forage at feeding grounds 200 – 1000 km from their nesting beaches. Hawksbill turtles nesting at Varanus Island and Rosemary Islands forage at locations 50 – 450 km from their nesting beaches. While all of the nesting beaches within the B-L-M island complex are protected under the Barrow-Montebello Marine Conservation Reserves, the only foraging ground similarly protected is the Northern Territory foraging ground used by Scott Reef green turtles. None of the foraging grounds used by North West Shelf green or hawksbill turtles is currently protected by conservation reserves.
