A Comparative Study of Seizure Susceptibility and Serum Calcium, Magnesium and Phosphorus Profiles of Magnesium Deficient Rats

Bernhard, Nicole H. 01 May 1982 (has links)
Magnesium deficiency in rats is known to precipitate audiogenic seizures. An unknown mineral factor in a diet mixture was found to substantially reduce the seizure occurence in magnesium deficient vii animals. This was corrected when the same mineral mixture was remade. Subsequently the faulty mineral mixture was discarded. This research .. as aimed at determining the mineral factor responsible for the observed changes in seizure occurence, and also aimed at investigating the relationships of serum calcium, magnesium and phosphorus concentrations to seizure susceptibility. Treatments to change the serum concentrations of these minerals included dietary manipulation, subcutaneous injection of calcitonin, of 1 ,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol, of calcium and of phosphorus. Animals fed magnesium deficient, low phosphorus diet and magnesium deficient animals fasted over-night were found to have significantly lower audiogenic seizure susceptibility than all other magnesium deficient animals regardless of treatment. Reduced audiogenic seizure susceptibility was not produced by any of the injections. The reduction in seizure with the magnesium deficient, low phosphorus diet indicates that phosphorus is an important factor in the mechanism of audiogenic seizuring in magnesium deficient rats.

A Comparative Study of Aristotle's Poetics and Ezra Pound's ABC of Reading

Hagensick, Michael P. 09 June 1976 (has links)
This paper is a comparative study of Aristotle's Poetics and Ezra Pound's ABC of Reading to discover and determine values in literature, especially poetry, which reflect on the nature and the manifestations of human communication. I feel that scholars in the field of communication can benefit personally and academically from exposure to those poets who have expr essed themselves on the reasons or the manners in which people communicate. To pursue this question requires the use of a guide to poetry, a method by which I can learn to recognize a poem on sight; so that when it comes to discourse about the communicative values of poetry, I can be assured that it is poetry and not some other thing which would be the subject of discourse. The guide is called a poetics. From among the various texts on poetics I have selected these two because not only do they contain scholarship and observation of extraordinary acumen, but also because a comparison between the two can produce valuable similarities and differences, which are of further use in establishing values for a given text of poetics.

Moving Air : A Comparative Study of Physical Controllers and Hand Tracking in Virtual Reality / Rörlig luft : En jämförande studie av fysiska kontroller och hand Spårning i virtuell verklighet

Konráð Albertsson, Ólafur January 2023 (has links)
Onboarding is a procedure used to familiarize new employees with the details of a new industry, and VR and AR training are increasingly being used for role-specific medical field experiences. This study aims to explore the affordances and challenges of a task-specific shaped controller vs. a regular controller in a VR training scenario. To explore this comparison in this study, 26 participants performed a task based on a real-life task performed in the metals industry using an Oculus VR headset, as shown above. The task entailed using a large ladle to move "Liquid aluminum" represented by conditioned spheres from the "lava" to a container referred to as a crucible. The task was performed twice, once utilizing hand tracking to control the virtual ladle and again using a physical stick to control the virtual ladle. The order in which the controller was used first was randomized. Participants’ user experience was measured by immersion questionnaire and after-study interview. Participant performance in VR was captured and analyzed in comparison to an optimal metric. Results showed user experience between using a physical controller and hand tracking to be similar, but task performance as measured by comparing average performance in time completion and distance traveled compared to expert-certified metrics proved participants to perform better using just the hand tracking.

En jämförande studie av Malmö FF och Hammarby IF:s supporterkultur : En kvalitativ studie om supporterkultur / A comparative study of Malmö FF and Hammarby IF's supporter culture : A qualitative study on supporter culture

Salihi, Shend, Dardan, Aliti January 2023 (has links)
This study has focused on exploring the supporter culture at Malmö FF and Hammarby IF, clubs that are often seen as two polar opposites in Swedish football. The study has focused on examining the various supporter groups within the associations. The aim of the study was to investigate why people get involved in the Swedish football culture and whether there are differences between different clubs. By conducting 9 semi-structured interviews with supporters connected to Malmö FF and Hammarby IF, we want to create a better picture of their supportership. The material was analyzed based on theories such as identity theory, habitus and rituals to examine supporters' meaning-making. The study shows that community and collective cohesion were an important part for the supporter groups. With the help of literature such as Vem vinner i längden? (1999) och Spela fotboll bondjävlar del 1 (2011) samt Spela fotboll bondjävlar del 2 (2016) we have been able to discuss the history of Hammarby IF and Malmö FF, which facilitated the study's second question. We have also compared the clubs in terms of aspects such as geography, history and forms of expression. The study shows that the clubs have rationalized the game in their own way and where Malmö has an advantage in its truly professional organization, and where Hammarby has the ability to create interest in the association's football. At the same time, we could claim that the supporter cultures in these associations have increasingly begun to resemble each other in the form of a lot of supporters on both sides.

Differential invasion of respiratory epithelial cells by members of the Burkholderia cepacia complex

Keig, P.M., Ingham, E., Vandamme, P.A.R., Kerr, Kevin G. January 2002 (has links)
No / To investigate whether there are differences between members of the Burkholderia cepacia complex in their ability to invade human respiratory epithelial cells, 11 strains belonging to genomovars I-V were studied in an antibiotic protection assay using the A549 cell line. Strains belonging to genomovars II and III were more invasive than those of genomovars I, IV and V. There was also intra-genomovar variation in invasiveness. No correlation between invasiveness and other putative virulence factors of importance in B. cepacia infection in individuals with cystic fibrosis, cable pilus and B. cepacia epidemic strain marker was identified.

The lunch business industry in Sweden and Denmark - : a comparative study.

Tindbæk, Lasse January 2012 (has links)
As the competition for talented workers increases fringe benefits are becoming an   increasingpart of the salary package. A token of this, could be the lunch industry, which has emerged in Denmark and Sweden as a way of attracting and retain skilled staff. Despite the similarities between the two countries, different business models dominate the lunch industries in the respective markets. This study displays some fundamental differences in the lunch habits, which are established from childhood experiences. All Swedish schoolchildren receive a free lunch consisting of a hot meal served as a buffet in big dining halls. Danish schoolchildren carry cold packed lunch bags from home, consisting primarily of rye bread and cold cuts. As a result of these experiences Swedes prefer hot meals for lunch throughout their lives, while Danes gladly eat their cold rye bread. Nonetheless, the dominating business model, within the Danish lunch industry, offers workers hot lunches served as buffets, while the common Swedish model requires workers to visit lunch restaurants. Alternatively, lunch can be delivered, but then it is served as single portions or cold/frozen and has to be heated. According to the results of this study there are no fundamental differences within the content or focus areas of the business models in the two countries and the key success factors are the same. The Swedish lunch models are not likely to be accepted in Denmark, due to the Danish population’s attitude towards frozen ready meals and that buffets makes single portions superfluous. On the other hand, the commonly applied Danish model seems to be a good fit with the Swedish culture, hence an entrepreneurial opportunity.
