Generalized solutions of systems of nonlinear partial differential equations

Van der Walt, Jan Harm 24 May 2009 (has links)
In this thesis, we establish a general and type independent theory for the existence and regularity of generalized solutions of large classes of systems of nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs). In this regard, our point of departure is the Order Completion Method. The spaces of generalized functions to which the solutions of such systems of PDEs belong are constructed as the completions of suitable uniform convergence spaces of normal lower semi-continuous functions. It is shown that large classes of systems of nonlinear PDEs admit generalized solutions in the mentioned spaces of generalized functions. Furthermore, the generalized solutions that we construct satisfy a blanket regularity property, in the sense that such solutions may be assimilated with usual normal lower semi-continuous functions. These fundamental existence and regularity results are obtain as applications of basic topological processes, namely, the completion of uniform convergence spaces, and elementary properties of real valued continuous functions. In particular, those techniques from functional analysis which are customary in the study of nonlinear PDEs are not used at all. The mentioned sophisticated methods of functional analysis are used only to obtain additional regularity properties of the generalized solutions of systems of nonlinear PDEs, and are thus relegated to a secondary role. Over and above the mentioned blanket regularity of the solutions, it is shown that for a large class of equations, the generalized solutions are in fact usual classical solutions of the respective system of equations everywhere except on a closed, nowhere dense subset of the domain of definition of the system of equations. This result is obtained under minimal assumptions on the smoothness of the equations, and is an application of convenient compactness theorems for sets of sufficiently smooth functions with respect to suitable topologies on spaces of such functions. As an application of the existence and regularity results presented here, we obtain for the first time in the literature an extension of the celebrated Cauchy-Kovalevskaia Theorem, on its own general and type independent grounds, to equations that are not analytic. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2009. / Mathematics and Applied Mathematics / unrestricted

Nilsson, Johanna, Pihl, Viktor January 2018 (has links)
Revenue accounting is a complex area of accounting with a lot of freedom for companies to adapt their accounting structures after its own needs. Depending on what the company in question regards as the purpose of a financial statement and how important that purpose is regarded the accounting structure will differ between companies. This study aims to examine which factors affect the structure of companies’ revenue accounting structure for continuing production. The purpose is to show how intricate balancing the different properties, principles and goals that are desired within revenue accounting for continuing production can be. The study was performed with a qualitative method and used semi-structured interviews regarding revenue accounting with the chief financial officers at seven different companies in the construction and consulting sector located within the Stockholm area. These interviews were later analyzed by means of accounting theories and research articles. The study concluded that the most crucial factor determining companies’ revenue accounting structure was accurate accounting both for internal and external use. Furthermore taxes, concern restriction or qualitative accounting properties had no effect. The elemental account principles could be seen to have had a certain influence. It could also be concluded that many companies prioritized a smooth revenue stream when deciding how to design their revenue accounting.

Stavební smlouvy - způsoby jejich zachycení v účetnictví / Construction contracts -- the ways of their accounting treatment

Mařasová, Lucie January 2008 (has links)
This thesis is concerned with accounting for construction contracts in the accounting records of a contractor. The first chapter is focused on accounting for construction contracts according to IAS 11 -- Construction contracts and contains also a brief description of interpretations IFRIC 12 and IFRIC 15, which are connected with IAS 11. Next chapter describes accounting for construction contracts according to the US GAAP. One chapter is also dedicated to the requirements of Czech accounting legislature that Czech contractors have to take into account when accounting for construction contracts. Last chapter is conceived as a case study which was prepared in order to determine how construction companies -- concretely three European and three American construction companies -- deal with construction contracts in practice.

Truncated Data Problems In Helical Cone-Beam Tomography

Anoop, K P 06 1900 (has links)
This report delves into two of the major truncated data problems in helical cone-beam tomography: Axial truncation and Lateral truncation. The problem of axial truncation, also classically known as the Long Object problem, was a major challenge in the development of helical scan tomography. Generalization of the Feldkamp method (FDK) for circular scan to the helical scan trajectory was known to give reasonable solutions to the problem. The FDK methods are approximate in nature and hence provide only approximate solution to the long object problem. Recently, many methods which provide exact solution to this problem have been developed the major breakthrough being the Katsevich’s algorithm which is exact, efficient and also requires lesser detector area compared to Feldkamp methods. The first part of the report deals with the implementation strategies for methods capable of handling axial truncation. Here, we specifically look at the exact and efficient Katsevich’s solution to long object problem and the class of approximate solutions provided by the generalized FDK formulae. The later half of the report looks at the lateral truncation problem and suggests new methods to handle such truncation in helical scan CT. Simulation results for reconstruction with laterally truncated projection data, assuming it to be complete, gives severe artifacts which even penetrates into the field of view (FOV). A row-by-row data completion approach using Linear Prediction is introduced for helical scan truncated data. An extension/improvement of this technique known as Windowed Linear Prediction approach is introduced. Efficacy of both these techniques are shown using simulation with standard phantoms. Various image quality measures for the resulting reconstructed images are used to evaluate the performance of the proposed methods against an already existing technique. Motivated by a study of the autocorrelation and partial autocorrelation functions of the projection data the use of a non-stationary linear model, the ARIMA model, is proposed for data completion. The new model is first validated in the 2D truncated data situation. Also a method of incorporating the parallel beam data consistency condition into this new method is considered. Performance evaluation of the new method with consistency condition shows that it can outperform the existing techniques. Simulation experiments show the efficacy of the ARIMA model for data completion in 2D as well as 3D truncated data scenario. The model is shown to work well for the laterally truncated helical cone-beam case.

IFRS 15 - Ny intäktsredovisningsstandard

Juma, Abid, Sarkar, Leonardo January 2018 (has links)
Background: The development of a new revenue recognition standard IFRS 15, began after a number of scandals that showed problems with the traditional approach of recognizing revenues. The comprehensive revenue standard has arisen many discussions of how the standard will impact the accounting of enterprises.    Purpose: The purpose of this study is to understand why revenue streams gets affected and not gets affected of the transition to IFRS 15.    Method: The data for this study has been collected, through a quantitative research. The data has mainly been collected from the company´s annual reports 2017. The Q4 reports for 2017 has for some companies been used as a complement to the annual report. The study contained all Large Cap companies listed at Nasdaq Nordic STO.   Results: Of a total of 95 companies, 19 companies showed that they had a quantifiable effect of the new revenue standard. 75 companies reported that they would not have a quantifiable effect of the new standard, while one company was a loss for this study.   Conclusions: The new revenue standard has meant that companies need to observe a focus on control, which determines the timing of the revenue recognition. In this study, it is not possible to assess whether the characteristics of specific revenue streams have been the basis of the quantifiable effect that IFRS 15 has given, but this has rather been determined by the distributed transaction price on performance commitments, which set the value of the contract.

Färdigställandegrad och dess konsekvenser i vinstavräkning : En kvalitativ studie om föränderliga entreprenadprojekt / Percentage of completion and its consequences in profit recognition : A Qualitative study on changeable construction projects

Braxell, David, Larsson, Filip January 2021 (has links)
Background: The regulations concerning revenue recognition have in recent decades changed a lot to adapt to international standards. Methods for profit recognition have been developed and are frequently used. Through the introduction of IFRS 15 they are now mandatory to use for many construction companies and since they introduce some uncertainties it could have an impact on the reliability in the accounting. Aim: The purpose of the study is to examine if construction companies use profit recognition and percentage of completion calculations and how they manage to achieve reliability in their accounting. Method: A qualitative study with an inductive approach was chosen to enable deeper understanding on the subject. To examine the topic, semistructured interviews with selected companies were performed, followed by some deeper interviews to achieve sufficient insights. The result was verified by interviews with two auditors. All interviews were performed through recorded video meetings. Theory: The theoretical background includes revenue recognition principles for construction companies, percentage of completion and profit recognition. Research articles on the subject are presented. Empirical: Empirical studies through semi-structured interviews with CFOs and controllers of selected listed and unlisted construction companies of various sizes, and finally with two authorized auditors. On the agenda were questions regarding application of regulations, profit recognition and management of changes in relation to achieving reliable accounting. Conclusions: The percentage of completion method is frequently used in construction projects, and this has not been impacted by the transition to the new IFRS 15 standard. It is mainly used in fixed price projects but occasionally in man/material-based projects and frame agreements. The method is well established and is considered to contribute to reliable accounting information since at the time of reporting a fair value is given. We have established that the percentage of completion calculations are part of a systemic process where cost prognosis data is collected, processed and the output is accounting data. The input prognosis may often be difficult to estimate in long projects or in early days and is often not entirely correct. In the process the input is integrated with existing project data, analyzed, and audited and after some manual interaction new data is produced. This process requires reviews, system support, competent staff and may be regarded as an input-output-process where the step between input and output is where the uncertainties are transformed into reliable output. This process is basically the same for all companies but is performed differently depending on company sizes. Smaller companies do not have access to the same level of system support and must rely more on individuals. The larger companies have an easier way to achieve reliability through advanced systems and they are less sensitive to misjudgments. In the study we have not proved that the larger companies make better prognosis, just that they have an easier way of making them. All interviewed companies are satisfied with the quality of the resulting accounting information.
