This is due to the recent economic growth that Brazil had achieved. These changes increased the employment of precast concrete structures. The front of this, some studies about the precast concrete connections had been developed. This work objective was to study the shear stress transference mechanism, which appears in the beam-slab connection interface – the composite beams. It was tested three different roughness degrees of the slab shear pockets: naturally rough surface, intentionally rough surface and surface with shear-key. For this, push-out tests – double “L” – were carried out and they showed that the employment of surface setting retarder admixture (ARSP) achieves the roughness degree recommended by the NBR 9062 (ABNT, 2006) without significantly reduce the connection strength. Next, with the same model type, the influence of the percentage of steel across the joint above the strength connection was tested. Besides, another model type – three blocks – was carried out with the same aim. Through those tests, It was could ascertained that the increase of the percentage of steel across the joint provides a linear increase of the strength connection, in as much as, the minimum and maximum values were inspected. Furthermore, the double “L” tests allowed the proposition of two expressions to determine the strength shear connection. And, in a third moment, composite beams were carried out, the results indicated, for the roughness degree and percentage of steel across the joint tested, that the beam-slab connection presents a partial interaction degree, even as the connection degree. Ultimately, the similarity between the three different types of tests could be proved with the proposed expressions application in the tests results. / A indústria da construção civil, no Brasil, tem passado por alterações nos últimos anos. Tal fenômeno deve-se ao atual crescimento econômico atingido pelo país. Como resultado dessas alterações, aumentou o emprego das estruturas pré-moldadas de concreto. Diante desse contexto, têm sido realizados estudos sobre ligações entre peças pré-moldadas. Este trabalho apresenta como objetivo o estudo dos mecanismos de transferência das tensões de cisalhamento que se formam na interface entre vigas e lajes pré-moldadas, as chamadas vigas compostas. Foram avaliados, por meio de ensaios de cisalhamento direto em modelos compostos por duas peças em formato de “L”, três diferentes níveis de rugosidade da interface entre as peças, quais sejam: superfície naturalmente rugosa, superfície intencionalmente rugosa e superfície com chaves de cisalhamento. Dessa avaliação da rugosidade, constatou-se ser possível garantir o nível mínimo de rugosidade estabelecido pela NBR 9062 (ABNT, 2006) com o emprego de um aditivo retardador de pega superficial (ARSP), não apresentando redução significativa na resistência da ligação. Posteriormente, foram realizados ensaios utilizando o mesmo modelo, nos quais foi avaliada a influência da taxa de armadura normal à interface, que variou de 0,19% a 1,2%, sobre a resistência ao cisalhamento da ligação. E, paralelamente a esses ensaios, modelos do tipo três blocos ligados por meio de nichos, também com presença de armadura normal à superfície de cisalhamento, com taxas de 0,5% a 1,2%, foram testados e comparados com os anteriores. Tais ensaios permitiram a constatação de que ao se aumentar o valor da taxa de armadura, aumenta-se linearmente a resistência ao cisalhamento da ligação, ressaltando-se a necessidade de verificação de um valor mínimo e um máximo. E, além disso, os ensaios do tipo duplo “L” permitiram a proposição de expressões para cálculo da resistência ao cisalhamento da ligação. Em um terceiro momento, ensaios em vigas compostas formadas por viga e laje pré-moldadas ligadas mediante nichos com superfícies tratadas com ARSP foram realizados. Esta etapa visava à confirmação da eficiência da ligação com nichos e conectores metálicos. Quanto aos ensaios das vigas compostas, estes mostraram que para o nível de rugosidade avaliada e as taxas de armadura adotadas o grau de interação entre as peças é parcial, assim como seu grau de conexão. No que diz respeito à forma de ruptura observada nas vigas compostas, assim como nos modelos de cisalhamento direto, pode-se sugerir que o tratamento da interface na região dos nichos não proporcionou rugosidade suficiente para que houvesse uma ligação mais resistente entre as peças. E, por fim, da aplicação das expressões aos resultados dos ensaios de três blocos e de vigas constatou-se que há representatividade entre os três tipos de ensaio realizados.

Análise estrutural de vigas mistas de aço e concreto em perfis formados a frio: estudo da ligação viga-pilar e da região de momento negativo / Cold-formed steel and concrete composite beams: study of beam-to-column connection and region of hogging bending

No Brasil, o emprego de estruturas de aço constituídas por perfis formados a frio tem crescido consideravelmente, em virtude da ampla disponibilidade de laminados planos no mercado (chapas finas), bem como pela busca de soluções estruturais mais competitivas. Nesse cenário, pode-se destacar as estruturas mistas de aço e concreto destinadas aos edifícios habitacionais de pequeno porte, em que os tradicionais perfis laminados são substituídos por perfis formados a frio tanto nas vigas como nos pilares. Embora o sistema de vigas mistas possa ser considerado consolidado no campo dos perfis laminados e soldados, o comportamento estrutural no caso de perfis formados a frio necessita de investigação mais aprofundada, de modo a verificar os modos de ruína e a viabilidade do emprego dos modelos teóricos clássicos. Nesse trabalho foi desenvolvido um estudo teórico e experimental sobre as vigas mistas em perfis formados a frio duplo U enrijecido, focalizando a ligação mista (ligação viga-pilar) e consequentemente a resposta estrutural da região de momento fletor negativo. O programa experimental consistiu da análise de dois protótipos cruciformes para determinar a curva momento-rotação, o momento resistente, a rigidez, a capacidade de rotação e identificar modos de falha. Foi possível constatar maior capacidade de rotação da ligação com cantoneiras de assento e de alma quando comparada a uma ligação totalmente soldada. Comparando com o modelo experimental o método dos componentes avaliou de forma razoável a rigidez em serviço, já o método proposto por Leon et. al. superestimou muito esse parâmetro, a capacidade de rotação foi avaliada de forma satisfatória pelos dois métodos. O momento resistente negativo da viga mista obtido experimentalmente apresentou um valor intermediário entre os valores teóricos obtidos por processo plástico e elástico. / In Brazil, the cold-formed steel structures have been widely used justified by the large availability of steel sheets in the market (thin sheets) and the search for more competitive structural solutions. Thus as steel and concrete composite structures are applied in small constructions the traditional hot-rolled one is replaced by cold-formed members in the beams and columns. Even though the composite beams system is known in the hot-rolled and welded shapes field, the structural behavior of the cold-formed steel still needs more accurate investigation to verify the failure modes and the viability of the classic theoretical models. In this work a theoretical and experimental study about cold-formed steel and concrete composite beams was developed, focusing on the beam-to-column connection and the structural behavior on the region of hogging bending. For the experimental program two cruciform models of beam-column connections were analyzed to obtain the moment-rotation curves, the stiffness, and the rotation capacity. It was possible to verify the largest rotation capacity of the connection with the steel seat and web angle when compared with the totally welded connection. In the case of connection the method of the components estimates well the secant stiffness and the rotation capacity presenting a value closer to the ones obtained experimentally, Leon et al. procedures estimated well the initial stiffness and the rotation capacity, but the value of the secant stiffness is much larger than the experimental one. In the case of composite beam the ultimate strength (Mmax) experimentally obtained presented an intermediate value to the ones obtained by the plastic and elastic method.

Connection and flexural behaviour of steel RHS filled with high strength concrete

Steel hollow section members filled with concrete have been frequently used in recent construction industry as columns and beams and beam-columns because of their superior performance and constructability. Previous research demonstrated that such system has large energy absorption capacity which is critical in the event of an earthquake. By filling steel RHS with concrete, the failure of the steel shell due to local buckling can be delayed and the ductility of the concrete core can be improved as a result of the confinement of the steel shell. This type of composite section may be used in various structures including frames of high rise buildings, bridges, offshore structures, cast-in-situ piles in foundation etc. Design methods for concrete-filled steel tubular sections are recommended in a number of code of practices. Due to the significant differences in the material properties between normal strength concrete and high strength concrete, there is a need to study the behaviour of composite sections with higher strength concretes. The study emphasises ultimate strength, ductility, post-failure strength reserve and interface bond. It also emphasises ductility and post-failure strength of the composite beams due to the brittle behaviour of higher strength concretes when compared to normal strength concrete. Spreadsheet graph were used to present the results such as load versus strains, load versus deflections etc. In this thesis analytical study is presented on the calculation of ultimate moment of resistance of the concrete-filled RHS beams. Among the main considerations of the derivation, the steel portion was assumed either elastic-perfectly plastic or perfectly plastic and concrete carries no strength in the tensile zone. At the interface both full bond and partial bond were assumed for comparison. Efforts were also made to calculate the midspan deflections of the composite beams. Simple analytical expressions derived from this study can be coded to a prgrammable calculator or in a small spreadsheet program for design use. Finite element studies were carried out by using a proprietorship software package ANSYS. In the analysis of concrete-filled, three types of elements with large deformation and nonlinear capabilities were used. A plastic shell element, a solid concrete element with cracking and crushing capabilities, and a nonlinear spring contact element were used to model the steel shell, the concrete core and the interface respectively. / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Analysis of Thick Laminated Composite Beams using Variational Asymptotic Method

An asymptotically-exact methodology is presented for obtaining the cross-sectional stiffness matrix of a pre-twisted, moderately-thick beam having rectangular cross sections and made of transversely isotropic material. The beam is modelled with-out assumptions from 3-D elasticity. The strain energy of the beam is computed making use of the constitutive law and the kinematical relations derived with the inclusion of geometrical nonlinearities and initial twist. Large displacements and rotations are allowed, but small strain is assumed. The Variational Asymptotic Method (VAM) is used to minimize the energy functional, thereby reducing the cross section to a point on the reference line with appropriate properties, yielding a 1-D constitutive law. In this method as applied herein, the 2-D cross-sectional analysis is performed asymptotically by taking advantage of a material small parameter and two geometric small parameters. 3-D strain components are derived using kinematics and arranged as orders of the small parameters. Warping functions are obtained by the minimisation of strain energy subject to certain set of constraints that renders the 1-D strain measures well-defined. Closed-form expressions are derived for the 3-D non-linear warping and stress fields. The model is capable of predicting interlaminar and transverse shear stresses accurately up to first order.

O emprego de uma estrutura mista de aço – concreto (laje em concreto e vigas em perfis de aço) representa a priori uma solução mais eficiente para estruturas de pontes do que a consideração de uma estrutura toda em concreto ou toda em aço. No entanto para que isto ocorra na prática é necessário um dimensionamento criterioso desta estrutura, o que deve ser feito tendo como apoio softwares de simulação numérica. No CEMACOM tem sido desenvolvidos vários trabalhos nesse tema, os quais resultaram num código computacional com capacidade para simular vigas mistas submetidas a cargas de curta duração ou cargas de longa duração. Em contraponto, nesse trabalho a proposta é customizar um software comercial de elementos finitos (ANSYS) para realizar as mesmas tarefas. Depois do modelo construído tem se vantagens pois se dispõe da plataforma do ANSYS que permite analisar vários problemas associados ao assunto. Fez-se uma proposta de modelo numérico para se analisar vigas mistas no ANSYS. Tendo como ponto de partida os trabalhos de Lazzari (2015) e Lazzari et al. (2016) para a implementação do comportamento do concreto, fez-se algumas implementações numa rotina tipo usermat para fazer análises de cargas de curta duração. Os efeitos de longa duração, fluência e retração, foram implementados na rotina usermat tendo como base os trabalhos de Dias (2013) e Moreno (2016). O código customizado foi comparado contra resultados experimentais e numéricos que demonstraram o adequado funcionamento do mesmo. Finalmente o ANSYS customizado foi aplicado para modelar uma estrutura de ponte que havia sido previamente calculada por Schmitz (2014) empregando procedimentos de projeto normalizados. Este trabalho apresenta uma abordagem abrangente das estruturas mistas aço-concreto, com ênfase em edifícios, e dos principais elementos que compõem esse sistema: as vigas mistas, simplesmente apoiadas e contínuas, as lajes mistas e os pilares mistos. São abordados os aspectos construtivos, o comportamento estrutural e os procedimentos para dimensionamento recomendados pelas principais normas aplicáveis, enfatizando a norma norte-americana do AISC e o EUROCODE 4. O projeto em situação de incêndio também é analisado, considerando o comportamento e o dimensionamento de elementos mistos frente à ação do fogo. No final, são desenvolvidos exemplos de dimensionamento, onde procura-se comparar e discutir os resultados obtidos pelas principais normas / This study consists of a broad analysis of composite structures, with particular emphasis on buildings, and the principal elements that make up this system, i.e., continuous and simply supported composite beams, composite slabs and composite columns. Several aspects of construction are broached, as well as structural behavior and the procedures for design recommended by the main codes, mainly the American AISC and the EUROCODE 4 codes. Fire design is also analyzed, considering the behavior and design of composite elements under fire conditions. The study concludes with some examples of design, comparing and discussing the results achieved by the principal codes

When performance becomes unsatisfactory, intervention is needed in order to rehabilitate the structure. Structural rehabilitation is characterized by increasing the structure‟s original load bearing capacity. Of the various existing intervention techniques, this work studies the technique that increases the concrete section by adding more concrete to the compression side and evaluates the effectiveness of shear connectors to bond the new concrete to the base concrete. The increase of the concrete section and the layout of the shear connectors were done along the entire length of the beam. There were two test series. In the first test series, called preliminary tests, the variable studied was the type of connector in order to determine which type ("I", "U" or "AF") would present more efficient results. In the second test series we adopted the connector type "I", which showed the best results from the first series. The variables studied in the second series were the shear connector ratio, the influence of pre-cracking and the presence of confining reinforcement in the new concrete region. The surface treatment used was manual blasting without the use of bonding agents. The test results indicated that the presence of shear connectors type "I", a small ribbed reinforcement bar, prevented the loss of bond between the base concrete and the new concrete, prevented splitting of the new concrete cover which was observed in tests with beams reinforced without the shear connectors. Good results were obtained with respect to increased load bearing capacity of the beams, since even the pre-cracked beams gained strength as well as strength increased in non-cracked ones. / Uma estrutura é concebida para ter desempenho satisfatório durante sua vida útil atendendo aos requisitos para os quais ela foi projetada. Quando seu desempenho se torna insatisfatório é necessário que haja intervenção de forma a reabilitar a estrutura. O reforço estrutural tem a característica de reabilitar a estrutura aumentando sua capacidade portante original. Das várias técnicas de intervenção existente, optou-se por estudar nesse trabalho a técnica pelo aumento da seção de concreto pela face comprida avaliando a eficiência do uso de conectores de cisalhamento ligando o concreto do substrato ao concreto do reforço. O aumento da seção de concreto e a disposição dos conectores se deram ao longo de todo o comprimento longitudinal da peça. Foram realizadas duas séries de ensaio. Na primeira série de ensaios, denominados ensaios preliminares, a variável estudada foi o tipo de conector com o objetivo de determinar qual deles ( I , U ou AF ) apresentaria resultado mais eficiente. Na segunda série de ensaios adotou-se o conector tipo I , que apresentou os melhores resultados da primeira série. As variáveis de estudo da segunda série foram a taxa de conector, a influência da pré-fissuração e da armadura de confinamento na região do reforço. O tratamento de superfície adotado foi o apicoamento manual sem uso de ponte de aderência. Os resultados dos ensaios indicaram que a presença do conector de cisalhamento tipo I , formado por uma barra nervurada reta, conseguiu impedir a perda da aderência entre o concreto novo e o substrato, impedindo o desplacamento parcial entre estes materiais que havia sido observado nas vigas reforçadas sem os conectores. Obtiveram-se bons resultados com relação ao aumento da capacidade portante das vigas, visto que até nas peças pré-fissuradas houve ganho de resistência assim como nas peças íntegras.

Yes / This paper aims to investigate the flexural behavior of engineered cementitious composite (ECC)-concrete hybrid composite beams reinforced with fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) bars and steel bars. Thirty two hybrid reinforced composite beams having various ECC height replacement ratio and combinations of FRP and steel reinforcements were experimentally tested to failure in flexure. Test results showed that cracking, yield and ultimate moments as well as the stiffness of hybrid and ECC beams are improved compared with traditional concrete beams having the same reinforcement, owing to the excellent tensile properties of ECC materials. The average crack spacing and width decrease with the increase of ECC height replacement ratio. The ductility of hybrid reinforced composite beams is higher than that of traditional reinforced concrete beams while their practical reinforcement ratios are similar. Reinforced ECC beams show considerable energy dissipation capacity owing to ECC’s excellent deformation ability. Considering the constitutive models of materials, compatibility and equilibrium conditions, formulas for the prediction of cracking, yield and ultimate moments as well as deflections of hybrid reinforced ECC-concrete composite beams are developed. The proposed formulas are in good agreement with the experimental results.
