The Design of Vague Spatial Data Warehouses

Lopes Siqueira, Thiago Luis 07 December 2015 (has links) (PDF)
Spatial data warehouses (SDW) and spatial online analytical processing (SOLAP) enhance decision making by enabling spatial analysis combined with multidimensional analytical queries. A SDW is an integrated and voluminous multidimensional database containing both conventional and spatial data. SOLAP allows querying SDWs with multidimensional queries that select spatial data that satisfy a given topological relationship and that aggregate spatial data. Existing SDW and SOLAP applications mostly consider phenomena represented by spatial data having exact locations and sharp boundaries. They neglect the fact that spatial data may be affected by imperfections, such as spatial vagueness, which prevents distinguishing an object from its neighborhood. A vague spatial object does not have a precisely defined boundary and/or interior. Thus, it may have a broad boundary and a blurred interior, and is composed of parts that certainly belong to it and parts that possibly belong to it. Although several real-world phenomena are characterized by spatial vagueness, no approach in the literature addresses both spatial vagueness and the design of SDWs nor provides multidimensional analysis over vague spatial data. These shortcomings motivated the elaboration of this doctoral thesis, which addresses both vague spatial data warehouses (vague SDWs) and vague spatial online analytical processing (vague SOLAP). A vague SDW is a SDW that comprises vague spatial data, while vague SOLAP allows querying vague SDWs. The major contributions of this doctoral thesis are: (i) the Vague Spatial Cube (VSCube) conceptual model, which enables the creation of conceptual schemata for vague SDWs using data cubes; (ii) the Vague Spatial MultiDim (VSMultiDim) conceptual model, which enables the creation of conceptual schemata for vague SDWs using diagrams; (iii) guidelines for designing relational schemata and integrity constraints for vague SDWs, and for extending the SQL language to enable vague SOLAP; (iv) the Vague Spatial Bitmap Index (VSB-index), which improves the performance to process queries against vague SDWs. The applicability of these contributions is demonstrated in two applications of the agricultural domain, by creating conceptual schemata for vague SDWs, transforming these conceptual schemata into logical schemata for vague SDWs, and efficiently processing queries over vague SDWs. / Doctorat en Sciences de l'ingénieur et technologie / Location of the public defense: Universidade Federal de São Carlos, São Carlos, SP, Brazil. / info:eu-repo/semantics/nonPublished

[en] A CONCEPTUAL MODEL FOR MOLECULAR BIOLOGY / [pt] UM MODELO CONCEITUAL PARA BIOLOGIA MOLECULAR

JOSE ANTONIO FERNANDES DE MACEDO 17 March 2006 (has links)
[en] Genomic and molecular biology projects are generating knowledge data whose volume and complexity are unparalleled in this research area. In addition, data and knoweledge sources produced and used by research groups have terminological differences (synonyms, aliases and formulae), syntactic differences (file structure, separators and spelling) and semantic differences (intra- and interdisciplinary homonyms). In this context, data management techniques play a fundamental role for biological applications development because it offers adequate abstractions to desing, implement, access and manage data, in order to generate knowledge. In this work, we study the representation problems presentd in traditional languages. Following, we raise the main requiremants for a new conceptual data model specially conceived for molecular biology. Finally, we propose a new conceptual data model with special types of constructor tryng to solve some of the representation problems discurssed before. In addition, we formalize our proposed model using first-order logic and we use this logical description to infer some properties that may help database designer during the elaboration of database schema.

Mapping and integration of schema representations of component specefications

Davies, Guy January 2005 (has links)
Specification for process oriented applications tends to use languages that suffer from infinite, intractable or unpredictably irregular state spaces that thwart exhaustive searches by verification heuristics. However, conceptual schemas based on FOL, offer techniques for both integrating and verifying specifications in finite spaces. It is therefore of interest to transform process based specifications into conceptual schemata. Process oriented languages have an additional drawback in that reliable inputs to the integration of diverse specifications can result in unreliable outputs. This problem can more easily be addressed in a logic representation in which static and dynamic properties can be examined separately. The first part of the text describes a translation method from the process based language SDL, to first order logic. The usefulness of the method for industrial application has been demonstrated in an implementation. The method devised is sufficiently general for application to other languages with similar characteristics. Main contributions consist of: formalising the mapping of state transitions to event driven rules in dynamic entity-relationship schemas; analysing the complexity of various approaches to decomposing transitions; a conceptual representation of the source language that distinguishes meta- and object models of the source language and domain respectively. The second part of the text formally describes a framework for the integration of schemata that allows the exploration of their properties in relation to each other and to a set of integration assertions. The main contributions are the formal framework; an extension to conflicts between agents in a temporal action logic; complexity estimates for various integration properties. / QC 20101004

Development of a new service-oriented modelling method for information systems analysis and design

Gustiené, Prima January 2010 (has links)
This thesis presents a new modelling method for information systems analysis and design, where the concept of service and the principles of service orientation are used for integrated modelling and reasoning about information systems architectures across organisational and technical systems boundaries. The concept of service enables cohesion of the intersubjective and objective modelling traditions by using a single type of diagram that facilitates detection of semantic inconsistency, incompleteness, ambiguity and discontinuity between the static and dynamic aspects of information systems specifications. The thesis is focused on three research topics, which are fundamental to the development of a new service-oriented modelling method. The first research topic concerns a pragmatic-driven specification of information systems. It clarifies answers to the research question: How can a conceptual modelling process be driven by pragmatic considerations? The second research topic provides a service-oriented modelling foundation for information systems analysis and design. It answers the research questions: How can the concept of service be used explicitly for the analysis and design of information systems and how can the static and dynamic aspects of information systems specifications be integrated at the conceptual level? The third research topic presents transition principles to implementation-specific design and answers the research question: How can service-oriented conceptual representations be aligned with implementation-specific design? The thesis contributes with a new knowledge to the area of conceptual modelling of information systems. The service-oriented modelling method consists of the modelling process, modelling language and techniques for the analysis and design of information systems on three levels of abstraction: pragmatic, semantic and syntactic. These three levels are necessary for a holistic understanding of enterprise architecture by stakeholders. The advantage of the service-oriented modelling method is that it can help to control traceability from information system design to original requirements. The method facilitates the semantic integration of the structural, behavioural and interactive aspects of information systems conceptual representations by using a single diagram type. The modelling language provides service-oriented constructs that are fundamental to building the major systems analysis patterns. The service-oriented modelling process contributes with seven steps of incremental design, which justifies various information systems components. The method provides the basis for a gradual and systematic way of modelling and an understanding of how pragmatic, semantic and logical information system requirements are linked together. The possibility to detect and eliminate undesirable characteristics of service-oriented diagrams can help to improve communication among stakeholders. Service-oriented specifications are computation-neutral and therefore they are more comprehensible for business analysis experts in comparison to implementation specific graphical representations of information systems. Finally, this thesis presents the challenges for future research, one of which is the development of the automated tools for the alignment of business models with implementation-specific information systems specifications.

Modélisation semi-distribuée de la production et du transfert des MES, HAPs et métaux dans les eaux urbaines de temps de pluie / Semi-distributed modeling of the production and transfer of suspended solids, PAHs and metals in urban stormwater

Al Ali, Saja 22 January 2018 (has links)
Commonly used stormwater quality models have poor performance in predicting the pollutant dynamics at the surface outlet, mainly due to the lack of precise knowledge on the governing processes and the difficulties of acquiring representative and continuous databases on real sites. The main purpose of this Ph.D. thesis is to improve the state of stormwater quality modeling. It aims in particular to develop a conceptual modeling tool for stormwater quality prediction at the scale of a city district catchment, based on a deep understanding of the build-up and the wash-off. The application of commonly used stormwater build-up/wash-off models to simulate the dynamics of total suspended solids (TSS) at the outlet of the road catchment suggests that the models poorly replicate the temporal variability of the TSS concentrations unless short periods are considered. The unpredictable nature of the accumulation is largely responsible for the model failure. The evaluation of the contribution of atmospheric dry deposition to stormwater loads for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and metals shows that atmospheric deposition is not a major source of contaminants in stormwater runoff. Thus, linking the air and water compartment in a modeling chain to have more accurate estimates of pollutant loads in stormwater runoff may not be relevant unless the direct traffic emissions are accounted for. The investigation of the wash-off process on elementary surfaces shows that the fine particles are the most likely to be mobilized and transported during a rainfall event. Stormwater samples were collected for this study using an innovative rainfall simulator that allows continuous, on-site monitoring of instantaneous flow and turbidity measurements and that can be easily transported and used on real sites. The new knowledge acquired on the build-up and wash-off processes underlines the great variability of these processes and calls into question their modeling with deterministic approaches. Hence, this knowledge is incorporated into developing a new conceptual stormwater quality model based on the stochastic drawing of event mean concentrations (EMC) of TSS and water quality parameters. The model is integrated within the hydrological model URBS. The application of this approach accounts for the spatial and temporal variability of pollutant emissions by distinguishing the contributions of each land use separately. The obtained results are promising in terms of estimating the concentration levels of TSS at the outlet of the city district catchment and replicating the general behavior of the TSS dynamics. However, improvements can be envisaged to consolidate the approach and improve its predictions. Comparison of this model with global empirical, semi-distributed conceptual and distributed physical modeling approaches shows that in terms of predictive power and stability, the stochastic-URBS and the physically distributed approaches are the most efficient. However, in terms of ease of implementation and best fit between observations and simulations, the global empirical and semi-distributed conceptual modeling approaches are the most powerful. This comparison shows that the perfect model that covers all aspects of stormwater quality modeling does not exist. The choice of the most appropriate modeling approach should mainly be driven by modeling objectives

Modelagem temporal de sistemas : uma abordagem fundamentada em redes de petri / Temporal modeling of information systems: a Petri net based approach

Antunes, Dante Carlos January 1997 (has links)
This dissertation presents TempER-Tr approach. TempER-Tr is a conceptual modeling technique based on Petri nets that integrates the specification of the dynamic properties of system to a temporal entity-relationship data model. A model or conceptual schema describes the identified properties of a system. These properties can be classified into static and dynamic properties. The static properties describe the states that the system can reach, while the dynamic properties describe the transitions between the states. The conceptual modeling of the static properties is usually known as data modeling, while behavioral or functional modeling deals with dynamic properties. The TempER-Tr model is an extension of a model known as ER-Tr. In the ER-Tr model, the conventional entity-relationship model is used to describe the static properties of a system. In the TempER-Tr model, it is adopted a kind of temporal entityrelationship model. In addition, a new notation language is proposed, based on SQL, with more expression power. The conventional entity-relationship model doesn't provide tools to specify constraints that involve the association of objects with the time dimension, requiring that this have to be done at the dynamic properties modeling level. At the conventional entityrelationship model the entities and relationships sets present just two dimensions: the first one is related to the instance (lines) and the second to the attributes (columns). At a temporal entity-relationship approach, a new dimension is added: the time line. This way, the temporal constraints can be specified at the level of the static diagrams. An important requirement to be supplied by any temporal data model is the possibility to relate, into the same diagram, time-varying objects with time-invarying objects. This is due to the fact that in information systems some data need to be explicitly related to time and others don't, either because they don't change with time, or because users don't need to know when the facts occurred. • The temporal data model proposed in this work, nominated TempER, presupposes that all entities, being them time-varying or time-invarying, have an "existence", or a temporal validity. At the time-varying entities, named transitory entities, this existence is a subset of points from the time line. In time-invarying entities, named perennial entities, it is assumed that they "always exist", i.e., their temporal validity is constant, implicit, and equal to all points of the time line. Transitory entities, as much as perennial entities, are focused by the TempER model through two perspectives: a temporal perspective and a non-temporal perspective. Through the non-temporal perspective the entities present two dimensions - lines and columns - similar to a conventional entity-relationship model. Through the temporal perspective the entities present three dimensions: the two conventional dimensions and, in addition, the time dimension. While the temporal data model describes the static properties of a system, the behavioral model in the TempER-Tr approach focus the transactions that are executed by the system, in response to the events that occur at the external environment. A certain set of dynamic constraints must be attended so that transactions are enable to occur. This configures a behavior similar to a Petri net. The TempER-Tr model is completely mappeable, inclusive the temporal data model, to the CEM net, a kind of high level Petri net. This way, the semantic of TempER-Tr model is formally specified. In addition, the utilization of the characteristics of Petri nets is possible.

Ontology-based approach for standard formats integration in reservoir modeling / Abordagem baseada em ontologias para integração de formatos padrões em modelagem de reservatórios

Werlang, Ricardo January 2015 (has links)
The integration of data issued from autonomous and heterogeneous sources is still a significant problem for an important number of applications. In the oil and gas industry, a large amount of data is generated every day from multiple sources such as seismic data, well data, drilling data, transportation data, and marketing data. However, these data are acquired by the application of different techniques and represented in different standards and formats. Thus, these data exist in a structured form in databases, and in semi-structured forms in spreadsheets and documents such as reports and multimedia collections. To deal with this large amount of information, as well as the heterogeneous data formats of the data, the information needs to be standardized and integrated across systems, disciplines and organizational boundaries. As a result, this information integration will enable better decision making within collaborations, once high quality data will be accessible timely. The petroleum industry depends on the efficient use of these data to the construction of computer models in order to simplify the geological reality and to help understanding it. Such a model, which contains geological objects analyzed by different professionals – geologists, geophysicists and engineers – does not represent the reality itself, but the expert’s conceptualization. As a result, the geological objects modeled assume distinct semantic representations and complementary in supporting decision-making. For keeping the original intended meanings, ontologies were used for expliciting the semantic of the models and for integrating the data and files generated in the various stages of the exploration chain. The major claim of this work is that interoperability among earth models built and manipulated by different professionals and systems can be achieved by making apparent the meaning of the geological objects represented in the models. We show that domain ontologies developed with support of theoretical background of foundational ontologies show to be an adequate tool to clarify the semantic of geology concepts. We exemplify this capability by analyzing the communication standard formats most used in the modeling chain (LAS,WITSML, and RESQML), searching for entities semantically related with the geological concepts described in ontologies for Geosciences. We show how the notions of identity, rigidity, essentiality and unity applied to ontological concepts lead the modeler to more precisely define the geological objects in the model. By making explicit the identity properties of the modeled objects, the modeler who applies data standards can overcome the ambiguities of the geological terminology. In doing that, we clarify which are the relevant objects and properties that can be mapped from one model to another, even when they are represented with different names and formats.
