This thesis is an etnography of the network of cearense gay beauty contests in order to call attention to the complexity of the issues involved in the holding and running of these contests. The general objective consists of understanding how the construction of masculinity and femininity occurs, taking into consideration its intersection with race and class in this network‟s context. The applied methodology is ethnography based and sets out from the notion of multi-sited fieldwork and from a perspective that seeks the understanding of native categories, besides considering the notion of “cut in the network”. For this purpose, I carried out a prolonged field survey, living with the people involved in the network and attending their events, meetings and varied gatherings over three years. In this regard, I understood that the cearense gay beauty contests are integrated to a larger network of cultural and leisure events, which take place in Fortaleza‟s periphery and compose the class‟ taste and the lifestyle of youngsters from low income classes. In addition, the femininity constructed by cearenses misses elaborates an idealized and spectacular notion, based on rules of discreet and elagant manners, as well as aesthetical preferences that favor corporal features associated to whiteness. This process stems from the manipulation of techniques and artifacts which construct their corporality, setting up an emic categorization of what luxury and glamour would be. A rethoric of masculinity is also developed in order to allow the continued entitlement to run in a gay beauty contest.
