January 2014 (has links)
Abstract: The study was conducted in order to determine the residual feed intake (RFI) and enteric methane production in Nelore cattle feedlot or pasture. The animals were evaluated on performance of feedlot post-weaning test and pasture later. In confinement data of food consumption and body weight of 163 young Nellore, for the classification of the CAR were collected. Of these, 49 animals (25 low and 24 high RFI) underwent collection of methane (CH4), enteric and 73 (49 low and high RFI that participated in the collection of CH4 and 24 average CAR) were evaluated again in pasture. When confined, the animals were fed a diet based on corn silage and pasture (Brachiaria brizhanta cv Marandu) was supplied multiple supplements. In the pasture, fecal excretion was estimated through the use of external markers of chromium oxide, supplement intake, the indicator titanium dioxide and dry matter intake was obtained using iNDF as internal indicator. The measurement of CH4, in both experiments, was performed using the technique of SF6 in confinement for 7 days and 6 days in the pasture. Data were analyzed using GLM procedure of SAS and the correlations between the CAR calculated in the feedlot and on pasture as well as the correlations between their variables were obtained from PROC CORR procedure of SAS. No differences (P <0.10) were found between classes of CAR in the initial, final and metabolic PC and GMD in both systems. In confinement differences were found in the fecal excretion (P = 0.0008) in DM intake (P <0.0001), NDF (P = 0.0050), EB (P = 0.0003) and in the production of CH4 (g / day, p = 0.0842) among the classes of CAR. In evaluating CH4 made on pasture, there were no significant differences between the classes in any of the measures. At approximately 31.5% of feedlot animals remained class of CAR, whereas 68.5% class switched on pasture. However, only 5% of the animals changed CAR CAR low to high, ie, efficient became inefficient and 17% were ... / Mestre

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the differences between qualitative, quantitative and sensory parameters of the Longissimus muscle of cattle and buffaloes.

Aboujaoude, Carolyn. January 2015 (has links)
Abstract: The intramuscular fatty acid (FA) profile in beef is important for human health, as well as being responsible for meat flavor and juiciness. The total quantity of FAs in the Longissimus thoracis predicts palatability and is the main determinant of carcass value by international standards of meat quality. It has been known that the type of FA has a larger impact on health issues when compared to the total quantity of such. There is a lack of genetic parameter estimates for beef fatty acid profile in Bos indicus, since the zebu breeds are the predominant source of beef in tropical and sub-tropical regions. Therefore, the results obtained in the present study should support farmers and researchers in order to define selection criteria to improve the beef fatty acid composition in zebu cattle. The objective of this study is to estimate (co)variance components and genetic parameters for beef FA composition in 937 Nellore bulls, previously kept in feedlot for a 90 day period with an average of 24 months of age and 500-550kg of slaughter weight. The FA profile was analyzed in Longissimus thoracis samples using a gas chromatography. The contemporary groups were organized based on farm and year of birth, and management group at yearling. The following 14 fatty acids were quantified: palmitic (C16:0), stearic (C18:0), oleic (C18:1 cis-9), linoleic (C18:2 cis-6), CLA (C18:2 cis-9 trans-11), CLA (C18:2 trans-10 cis-12), α-linolenic (C18:3 n3), myristic (C14:0), myristoleic (C14:1), elaidic (C18:1 n9t), vaccenic (18:1 t11), eicosatrienoic (C20:3 n6 cis-8,11,14), eicosatrienoic (C20:3 n3 cis-11,14,17) and arachidonic (C20:4). The proportion of saturated (SFA), monounsaturated (MUFA), polyunsaturated (PUFA), n-9, n-6 and n-3 were calculated using the individual fatty acid concentration. The model used for the (co) variance estimation included direct random genetic effect, the fixed effect of the CG, and the animal's slaughter age as a covariable ... / Mestre

Paschoaloto, Josimari Regina. January 2016 (has links)
Abstract: Glycerin has been used as a source of energy in ruminant diets, however, due to low capacity ruminal acidifying from products of their fermentation, it can be used to prevent ruminal metabolic problems. The objective of this study was to evaluate glycerin as an ingredient able to reduce ruminal metabolic problems. We evaluated dry matter intake, performance, feed behavior, papillae morphology and carcass characteristics. Sixty Nellore bulls were used in a randomized block design in factorial arrangement 2×2, diet with presence and absence of 30% DM crude glycerin and two periods of feedlot (adaptation and finishing time). Diets were formulated to be nutritionally isocaloric (1.0 Mcal NEg/ kg DM) and isonitrogenous (12.5% CP/ MS). The data were analyzed by MIXED procedure of SAS software. The inclusion of crude glycerin increased the DM digestibility in vitro of diets and reduced DM intake of bulls during finishing time. The inclusion of crude glycerin in adaptation and finishing time increased ADG. The carcass characteristics evaluated 30 minutes and 24 hours after slaughter (pH, L*, a* and b*) were not affected by inclusion of crude glycerin in any period of feedlot. The inclusion of crude glycerin in finishing time of feedlot provided smaller time spent ruminating standing, larger total chewing time, lower feed efficiency and smaller number of bolus per day. The mitotic index was higher for animals feeding with crude glycerin in the feedlot finishing time. The inclusion of crude glycerin did not affect the feed behavior or morphology of rumen papillae, and proved to be an alternative ingredient to adapt the animals to high concentrate diets. In conclusion, the crude glycerin can be used in high concentrate diets as an energy source and ingredient assist the adaptation of animals without changing the behavioral characteristics, carcass, performance, or morphology of ruminal papillae and ... / Doutor

Forty-two animals with an initial body weight of 296±25 kg were distributed in a completely randomized design consisting of 3 treatments and 14 replicates. The diet on a DM basis was comprised of sugarcane bagasse (200 g/kg) plus concentrate (800 g/kg). The treatments were without supplementary P (T1), commercial mineral supplement specific for feedlot cattle (T2) and dicalcium phosphate (T3) with 0.24, 0.42 or 0.50 % P, respectively. The DM, CP and NDF intakes were similar between the groups with or without the PS (P>0.05). The highest intakes of Ca and Mg were observed in the treatments with commercial mineral supplement or dicalcium phosphate. Intake, retention and excretion of P were influenced by the increase in P content in the experimental diets (P<0.05). Performance and carcass characteristics were not affected by P content in the diet (P>0.05). Supplementation with P significantly increased the excretion of P in the feces and urine and the feeding cost. Therefore, under Brazilian conditions, there is no justification for supplementing P in feedlot rations. The animals submitted or not to phosphorus supplementation had a similar content of Ca, Ca:P ratio and bone mineral density (BMD) at the 12th rib (P>0.05). However, animals of the T1 and T3 treatments had significant reductions in ma... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Mestre

Three hundred and fifty - two animals (initial body weight (BW) = 389 ± 33.8 kg and 26 months old) were assigned into 36 pens (experimental unit) where was evaluated the feedlot times, which consisted in 61, 89, 117 and 145 days. Da ta were obtained from all bulls into nine pens for each feedlot time. At the beginning of the study, nine animals were slaughtered (one representative of each weight block) to determine the initial carcass weight. The carcass daily gain was calculated as t he difference betwe en the final weight hot carcass and initial estimated by reference slaughter. Carcass gain ( CG ) expressed in percentage, is the amount of casing per unit weight gain. The datas were analized using orthogonal polynomial contrasts in a ran domized block design (blocked by initial body weight) in the SAS PROC MIXED (9.0). Significance was declared at P ≤ 0. 05 . During the feeding days the animals did not differ in the DMI, in kg / day, however when expressed as a percentage of body weight, a l inear reduction in consumption, ADG, ADG car and FE and FE c was observed as body weight increased linearly (P < 0.0001). There was a linear increase (P < 0.01) for BW with increasing feedlot time. Final body weights were 498, 533, 555 and 583 kg, in their f eedlot times. There were gains of 1.28, 1.21, 1.10 and 1.01 kg of carcass / day. The dressing percen... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Doutor

A total of 250 Nellore cattle were used, with a mean weight of 363 kg. The animals were housed in 35 collective pens equipped with six linear meters of concrete feeding trough and water troughs of 1500L. The animals were blocked by weight, so they were arranged so that each pen 7 animals, and the last block (5 final pens) housed 8 animals. From each pen, 2 animals were randomly selected at the beginning of the experiment, in order to separate the animals that carried out blood collection and data collection in slaughterhouse, totaling 70 animals for such collections. The experiment was 148/156 days in total, in the period of adaptation and termination. The types of diet, such as the ingredients themselves, sugar cane bagasse, corn grain, citrus pulp, cottonseed meal and mineral, but with regard to a proportion of bulky: a different, being a 22:78 adaptation; transition 17:83 and termination 12:88 The supply was made in the morning and during the afternoon, two supplies of 50% each. In all diets, 25 mg/kg MS of virginiamycin was added to the mineral core and according to treatments sodium monensin was added at a dose of 20 mg/kg DM. Five treatments were applied: VM - Use of virginiamycin throughout the experimental period, without addition of sodium monesin in the diet (Control); 34d - Use sodium monesin f...

Grupioni, Natalia Vinhal. January 2012 (has links)
In this work, the goal for the aforementioned traits was to estimate genetic parameters in Guzera cattle in order to provide support for the program of genetic evaluation of animals of this breed. The genetic parameters were estimated by restricted maximum likelihood method (REML) in two-trait animal model. The animal model included fixed effects of contemporary groups for AFC, CI, GP, SC365 and SC450, and the covariate age of cow at calving (linear and quadratic effects) to SC365 and SC450. The covariate age at first calving (linear effect) was included in animal model for CI in two-trait analysis, except between AFC and CI. Random additive genetic and residual effects were considered for all traits. Random maternal genetic effect was considered for GP. The heritability estimates ranged from 0.08 ± 0.05 (AFC) to 0.48 ± 0.11 (GP). Genetic correlation observed between SC365 and AFC (-0.41 ± 0.12) and SC450 and AFC (-0.23 ± 0.14) indicated that selection for scrotal circumference, mainly at 365 days of age, may favor the indirect selection of females sexually earliest. Genetic trends were significant (p <0.0001) for all traits, except for the GP maternal... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Mestre
