Linking immigration policies and migrants' journeys: an interdisciplinary endeavor

Baumann, Mechthild, Lorenz, Astrid, Rosenow, Kerstin January 2011 (has links)
Both the interests of nation states to manage migration and the behavior of migrants during their individual journeys have mutually reinforcing effects on the design and functioning of contemporary migration regimes. This assumption has motivated the interdisciplinary approach of this volume. The aim is to understand how immigration policies affect migrants’ journeys and vice versa. We want to find out whether or not the assumptions that lead to the design of immigration policies reflect reality. Does border control prevent irregular immigration? And what is the role of the various actors, including the countries of origin, transit, and arrival, and the migrants themselves? In order to answer these questions, we bring together insights from political science and ethnographic field work—two disciplines which have so far debated their insights mainly within separate research frameworks. The articles take into account the interests of the migrants’ countries of origin, transit and arrival, as well as the motives and strategies of the migrants themselves. The resulting findings are relevant to both policy makers and scientific experts, but also to anyone interested in governing migration.

Disease resistance and productivity in genetically improved loblolly pine: Results from a resistance screening trial and a midrotation comparison of genetic improvement levels

Goodfellow, Stephen W. 09 December 2022 (has links)
Decades of tree improvement has resulted in genetic gains in loblolly pine productivity, form, and resistance to fusiform rust. The goal of this study was to advance the understanding and applied use of genetic improvement by analyzing inter- and intra-provenances hybrids’ rust resistance and evaluating midrotation performance of varying levels of genetically improved stock types. The first study compares 16 seedlots at the USDA Resistance Screening Center and evaluates rust resistance of controlled-pollinated inter- and intra-provenances crosses, and openpollinated seedlots from three provenances: Western Gulf, Atlantic Coastal, and Interior Piedmont. Post inoculation, one Coastal OP seedlot was resistant and ten of the seedlots were susceptible to the disease. The second study compares three levels of improved stock types: second-generation open-pollinated, controlled pollinated, and varietal material. After the fifteenth growing season, all three improved stock types were not significantly different from one another in defects, height, diameter, volume, and exhibited site index.

Akumulátorová sekačka na trávu / Battery supplied lawn mower

Picmaus, Jan January 2021 (has links)
The thesis deals with a concept of turning a conventional petrol powered lawn mower to a battery powered solution which is powered by lithium cells. A division to three chapters, comparison, mechanical and electrical, provides fluency of the whole design and further realization. The arrangement of chapters is performed so that the continuity of the thesis is maintained. Calculations of parameters of every motor and transmission with choosing particular devices are just a part of much interesting information which can be found in this thesis. All new components have full documentation except those which were changed during manufacturing. The electrical part explains every part of the schematics in detail. The realization contains difference between preliminary design and further production, manufacturing of the PCB and powering up the motor drives. The last part of the thesis contains temperature measurements of the device at no load.

Elektronická škrticí klapka / Electronic throttle

Dušek, Jiří January 2011 (has links)
The aim of this master’s thesis was to analyze the contemporary electronic throttles and the requirements imposed on them. Then to build the mathematical model, identify parameters of the given electronic throttle, proceed the verification and on its basis to build the simulation model. There were selected suitable control and high power components to control the electronic throttle. Due to the knowledge of these parameters the simulation model was extended. For this extended simulation model was designed the position cascade controller with speed and current control loop. Using the designed controller the implementation of the electronic throttle control and the available high power and control module was realized.

Neuro-fuzzy systémy / Neural-Fuzzy Systems

Dalecký, Štěpán January 2014 (has links)
The thesis deals with artificial neural networks theory. Subsequently, fuzzy sets are being described and fuzzy logic is explained. The hybrid neuro-fuzzy system stemming from ANFIS system is designed on the basis of artificial neural networks, fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic. The upper-mentioned systems' functionality has been demonstrated on an inverted pendulum controlling problem. The three controllers have been designed for the controlling needs - the first one is on the basis of artificial neural networks, the second is a fuzzy one, and the third is based on ANFIS system.  The thesis is aimed at comparing the described systems, which the controllers have been designed on the basis of, and evaluating the hybrid neuro-fuzzy system ANFIS contribution in comparison with particular theory solutions. Finally, some experiments with the systems are demonstrated and findings are assessed.

Kvalitetsuppföljnigar - en möjlighet för organisationslärande / Quality control - a chance for organizational learning

Magnusson, Sandra January 2020 (has links)
In the public sector, both audit and quality control processes play a vital part in governance model of today. The magnitude of the usage of the concept is so vast that it has been said that we are living in the audit society. The discussions that prevail are not whether they are needed, but how they should be carried out. The aim of this study is to evaluate and analyze part of the described audit society, in order to be able to make proposals for improvement. A case study has been carried out at the Quality and development department within municipal social services administration. The study has reviewed the quality control process performed at this department from the perspective of Total Quality Management. The current situation was mapped through interviews, discussions and document studies that later on were analyzed to highlight different areas for improvement. The result shows a limiting dutiful ethical organizational culture with a strong focus on assignments and requirements, but less on responsibility and development. The study concludes that a cultural change is needed, a change that promotes organizational learning and continuous improvement.
