On the synthesis of fixed order stabilizing controllers

Kang, Sin Cheon 25 April 2007 (has links)
In this dissertation, we consider two problems concerning the synthesis of fixed order controllers for Single Input, Single Output systems. The first problem deals with the synthesis of absolutely stabilizing fixed order controllers for Lure-Postnikov systems. The second problem deals with the synthesis of fixed order stabilizing controllers directly from the empirical frequency response data and from some coarse information of the plant. Lure-Postnikov systems are frequently encountered in mechanical engineering applications. Analytical tools for synthesizing stabilizing fixed structure controllers, such as the PID controllers examining the absolute stability of Lure-Postnikov systems, have recently been studied in the literature. However, tools for synthesizing controllers of arbitrary order have not been studied yet. We propose a systematic method for synthesizing absolutely stabilizing controllers of arbitrary order for the Lure-Postnikov systems. Our approach is based on recent results in the literature on approximation of the set of stabilizing controller parameters that render a family of real and complex polynomials Hurwitz. We provide an example of a robotic system to illustrate the procedure developed. Exact analytical models of plants may not be readily available for controller design. The current approach is to synthesize controllers through the identification of the analytical model of the plant from empirical frequency response data. In this dissertation, we depart from this conventional approach. We seek to synthesize controllers directly (i.e. without resort to identification) from the empirical frequency response data of the plant and coarse information about it. The coarse information required is the number of nonminimum phase zeros of the plant(or the number of poles of the plant with positive real parts) and the frequency range beyond which the phase response of the LTI plant does not change appreciably and the amplitude response goes to zero. We also assume that the LTI plant does not have purely imaginary zeros or poles. The method of synthesizing stabilizing controllers involves the use of generalized Hermite-Biehler theorem for counting the roots of rational functions and the use of recently developed Sum-of-Squares techniques for checking the nonnegativity of a polynomial in an interval through the Markov-Lucaks theorem. The method does not require an explicit analytical model of the plant that must be stabilized or the order of the plant, rather, it only requires the empirical frequency response data of the plant. The method also allows for measurement errors in the frequency response of the plant. We illustrate the developed procedure with an example. Finally, we extended the technique to the synthesis of controllers of arbitrary order that also guarantee performance specifications such as the phase margin and gain margin.

Implementation and Tuning of PID, Fractional PID and LA Controllers for pH Control

Ardinugroho, Servatius Bismanditio 25 January 2019 (has links)
Maintaining the pH of a fluid or a solution at a specific value is a concern in many industrial processes, wastewater management, and food and pharmaceutical production. Given the importance of controlling pH in many processes, the objective of this thesis is to study and compare the effectiveness of some controller algorithms to control the pH of a process. In this study, the performance of three controller algorithms, namely PID, fractional PID and LA controllers, is evaluated for the control of a simple neutralization process using conventional controller performance metrics. Performance metrics used are the response time, the Integral of the Time weighted Absolute Error (ITAE), the Integral of the Squared Error (ISE), and the Integral of the Squares of the changes (ΔU) in the manipulated variable (ISDU). The three controllers were therefore tuned to minimize one or a combination of the controller performance metrics. Results show that PID, fractional PID and LA controllers implemented and tested in this research are all worthy controllers for maintaining pH of the neutralization process. Simulation results show that the three controllers can be used with confidence to cope with the high nonlinearity of a pH neutralization process provided that the process is properly designed. The relative small gain in performance obtained with the fractional PID controller, compared to a linear PID controller, suggests that it is not worth resorting to a fractional PID controller given its complexity and higher computation effort. Results show that PID and LA controllers are easy to implement with short response time and low ITAE and ISDU performance metrics.

Controller : En yrkesroll i utveckling

Nilsson, Emma, Sandborg, Josefin January 2014 (has links)
Background: The Controller is a profession which came to Sweden in the 1970s and it has since then been difficult to find a general definition of what the main duties of a controller are. Studies about controllers have shown that the profession is in constant development. Literature in the field claim that a controller should be trained in economics and generally work with financial management. The tasks of controllers vary greatly and the problem is that companies today are using the title controller as a exclusive title and to be able to shape the role themselves since it is so difficult to define. Objective: The purpose of this study is to define the typical controller's background and his or her primary duties. The paper also aims to create an understanding of how the profession has developed to date and to see which duties the controllers belive will occupy more of their time in the future. Method: To meet the purpose of the paper a quantitative study were performed where data collection has been done through a survey. The survey was sent to approximately 70 different organizations in Sweden and involved a total of 148 respondents. Conclusion: This study shows that a controller today usually have some sort of financial background and that their primary duties have evolved towards the duties of a classical controller. Respondents believe that the duties that will take more of their time in the future are those that can be linked to the classic controller role. The study revealed that a controller does many different things, and we, like many before, concluded that the professional role is hard to define.

Körösi Rejman, David, Gravåhs, Maria January 2008 (has links)

DC Motor Speed Control via Fuzzy / Pole Placement / PI Controller

Ashraf, Ali Junaid January 2010 (has links)
This report presents a new way of control engineering. Dc motor speed controlled by three controllers PID, pole placement and Fuzzy controller and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each controller for different conditions under loaded and unloaded scenarios using software Matlab. The brushless series wound Dc motor is very popular in industrial application and control systems because of the high torque density, high efficiency and small size. First suitable equations are developed for DC motor. PID controller is developed and tuned in order to get faster step response. The simulation results of PID controller provide very good results and the controller is further tuned in order to decrease its overshoot error which is common in PID controllers. Further it is purposed that in industrial environment these controllers are better than others controllers as PID controllers are easy to tuned and cheap. Pole placement controller is the best example of control engineering. An addition of integrator reduced the noise disturbances in pole placement controller and this makes it a good choice for industrial applications. The fuzzy controller is introduce with a DC chopper to make the DC motor speed control smooth and almost no steady state error is observed. Another advantage is achieved in fuzzy controller that the simulations of three different controllers are compared and concluded from the results that Fuzzy controller outperforms to PID controller in terms of steady state error and smooth step response. While Pole placement controller have no comparison in terms of controls because designer can change the step response according to nature of control systems, so this controller provide wide range of control over a system. Poles location change the step response in a sense that if poles are near to origin then step response of motor is fast. Finally a GUI of these three controllers are developed which allow the user to select any controller and change its parameters according to the situation.

Gremberg, Johanna January 2011 (has links)

Controllerrollen : en ökad förståelse för rollen inom stora svenska företag / The role of a controller : an increased understanding of the role in large Swedish companies

Johannesson, Lisa, Persson, Emma January 2018 (has links)
The role of a controller has existed within organizations since the beginning of the 20thcentury, but it has developed substantially over time. The controller initially had an accountant role and now they have an increasingly business oriented and analytical function within business organizations. In the 1930s, this drastic change of function in the role occurred by the Controllers Institute of America (CIA), which resulted in the controller getting a more analytical role. Within companies in Sweden and across Europe, the controller concept developed in the 1970s. However, the role of a controller still lacks a clear definition and the content in the role varies substantially across different business organizations. There are also many different types of controllers, which increases the role variation. The objective of this study is to increase the knowledge of the role of a controller; by studying which tasks and expertises that are included in the profession, the differences between companies and whether there is a difference between how the controller himself/herself and the others within the organizations define the role of a controller. The study is conducted with a qualitative study with an abductive approach. The empirics are collected via semi structured interviews with both controllers and related roles. The study was conducted by means of ten interviews across five different companies, of which seven interviews with controllers and three interviews with related roles. The controllers were categorized as three different types of controllers based on their duties and responsibilities; the analysts with elements of accountants, the accountant with elements of analysts and the mix of analyst, educator and coach. A noticeable difference in the role was noted between companies depending on their size and how their reporting is designed, but no major differences depending on industry. Finally, we concluded that the interviewed controllers and the related individuals largely agreed on controller role content in general as well as within each respective company.
