Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The literary legacy of Erico Verissimo presents a moment of privilege for the contemporary socio-political issues. The romances O Senhor Embaixador (1965) and O Prisioneiro (1967), subjects of this study, are part of this moment. In order to understand the implications of the ideologies and the representation of reality in his work, two exemplary characters were chosen: Leonardo Gris and Tenente, from O Senhor Embaixador and O Prisioneiro, respectively. These characters undertake what G. Lukacs defined as the search for the authentic values in a degraded world. This analysis seeks to comprehend to what extent is the human dimension particularly subjugated by forces that are as powerful as obscure in certain historical periods. The narrative material of romances, since the fictional form which it is elaborated, makes possible to relate them to the recent Latin America history, in the case of O Senhor Embaixador, and to the Brazilian political history, in the case of O Prisioneiro. Thus, the option for doing a literature of a realist statute and the configuration of characters who are representatives of the individual and social freedom, make the romances of Erico Verissimo a means of knowledge and critical penetration, using the terms coined by Benedito Nunes, such as it is sought to demonstrate in this dissertation. / O legado literário de Erico Verissimo apresenta um momento de privilégio às questões sociopolíticas contemporâneas. Os romances O Senhor Embaixador (1965) e O Prisioneiro (1967), objetos de estudo do presente trabalho, fazem parte desse momento. Para se entender as implicações ideológicas e de representação da realidade, recortou-se duas personagens exemplares que empreendem o que G. Lukács definiu como a busca dos valores autênticos num mundo degradado. Tratam-se de Leonardo Gris e do Tenente, respectivamente personagens das obras O Senhor Embaixador e O Prisioneiro. A análise busca compreender em que medida a dimensão humana é particularmente subjugada por forças tão poderosas quanto obscuras em certos períodos históricos. A matéria narrativa dos romances possibilita, desde a forma como está elaborada ficcionalmente, a sua relação com a história recente da América Latina, caso de O Senhor Embaixador, e com a história política brasileira, caso de O Prisioneiro. Assim, a opção por um fazer literário de estatuto realista e a configuração de personagens representativas do cerceamento da liberdade individual e social, de par com uma temática que problematiza as questões sociopolíticas contemporâneas, tornam esses romances de Erico Verissimo um meio de conhecimento e de penetração crítica, para usar os termos de Benedito Nunes, tal como se procura demonstrar nesta dissertação.
