In Their Shoes: Impact of Emotions on Marital Satisfaction, Communication, and Technology in Spouses of Deployed Military

January 2011 (has links)
abstract: Separation from a loved one is a highly stressful event. The range and intensity of emotions accompanying such a separation arguably are amplified when one's spouse deploys. This thesis examines at-home spouses (AHSs) of deployed military and how emotion, marital satisfaction, and communication are impacted throughout the deployment cycle. Additionally, I explore technology as a possible coping mechanism to help AHSs adapt and overcome stressfulness of deployment. One hundred sixty-six married females with a partner currently deployed, anticipating deployment, or recently returned from deployment completed an on-line survey. It was predicted AHSs would experience specific emotions during each phase, categorized as "anticipatory," (e.g., anger, worry) "absence" (e.g., lonely, sad) or "post" (e.g., happiness, relief); marital satisfaction also was predicted to be higher among spouses whose partner recently returned from deployment versus was deployed or anticipating deployment. Data showed AHSs whose partner was anticipating or currently deployed reported more "anticipatory" and "absence" emotions than AHSs with a recently returned partner. The former two groups did not differ in these emotions. AHSs with a recently returned partner reported more "post" emotions than the other two groups. Marital satisfaction did not differ based on deployment status. It was also predicted that among AHSs with a currently deployed partner, less negative emotion upon deployment would be associated with more frequent communication during deployment. Data showed AHSs who reported less negative emotion upon deployment engaged in more frequent communication with their deployed partner. Lastly, I predicted AHSs whose partners are currently deployed and who prefer modes of communication allowing direct contact (e.g., Skype) will experience less negative emotions than AHSs who prefer indirect contact (e.g., e-mail). Data showed reports of negative emotion did not differ based on preference for direct versus indirect communication. Therefore, negative emotions may develop and persist before and during deployment, but when the partner returns home, spouses do experience a rebound of positive emotions. Additionally, emotions at the time of deployment may be useful in predicting spouses' communication frequency during deployment. Findings aim to provide knowledge of family life during separation and explore technology as a possible coping mechanism for AHSs. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S. Psychology 2011

An Analytical Approach to Lean Six Sigma Deployment Strategies: Project Identification and Prioritization

January 2011 (has links)
abstract: The ever-changing economic landscape has forced many companies to re-examine their supply chains. Global resourcing and outsourcing of processes has been a strategy many organizations have adopted to reduce cost and to increase their global footprint. This has, however, resulted in increased process complexity and reduced customer satisfaction. In order to meet and exceed customer expectations, many companies are forced to improve quality and on-time delivery, and have looked towards Lean Six Sigma as an approach to enable process improvement. The Lean Six Sigma literature is rich in deployment strategies; however, there is a general lack of a mathematical approach to deploy Lean Six Sigma in a global enterprise. This includes both project identification and prioritization. The research presented here is two-fold. Firstly, a process characterization framework is presented to evaluate processes based on eight characteristics. An unsupervised learning technique, using clustering algorithms, is then utilized to group processes that are Lean Six Sigma conducive. The approach helps Lean Six Sigma deployment champions to identify key areas within the business to focus a Lean Six Sigma deployment. A case study is presented and 33% of the processes were found to be Lean Six Sigma conducive. Secondly, having identified parts of the business that are lean Six Sigma conducive, the next steps are to formulate and prioritize a portfolio of projects. Very often the deployment champion is faced with the decision of selecting a portfolio of Lean Six Sigma projects that meet multiple objectives which could include: maximizing productivity, customer satisfaction or return on investment, while meeting certain budgetary constraints. A multi-period 0-1 knapsack problem is presented that maximizes the expected net savings of the Lean Six Sigma portfolio over the life cycle of the deployment. Finally, a case study is presented that demonstrates the application of the model in a large multinational company. Traditionally, Lean Six Sigma found its roots in manufacturing. The research presented in this dissertation also emphasizes the applicability of the methodology to the non-manufacturing space. Additionally, a comparison is conducted between manufacturing and non-manufacturing processes to highlight the challenges in deploying the methodology in both spaces. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Industrial Engineering 2011

Automated Key Rotations In a Continuous Deployment Pipeline

Rylander, Jim, Moberg, Jacob January 2018 (has links)
Background. To the best of our knowledge, there is no related work that brings up key management in Continuous Deployment. Most of the previous research within the area handles challenges and how to apply to continuous methods. Objectives. By performing this research our goal was to determine how to apply automated key rotation as a way of improving the security in a Continuous Deployment pipeline. We also wanted to compare a manual way of rotating the keys compared to an automated way. When comparing these different scenarios to a scenario where no key rotation was active we hoped to reach a conclusion of whether it is worth implementing automated key rotations in a CDE pipeline or not. Methods. By configuring different tools like GitLab, GitLab-Runner and Vagrant we created a working test pipeline. Since manual key rotation can be implemented in the CDE pipeline, the goal was to create a script that could automate the same process. In our tests we focused on the keys between GitLab and GitLab-Runner. Our tests consisted of comparing three different scenarios, a pipeline with: no, manual and automated key rotations. The three different scenarios where compared on 7 factors to help us reach a conclusion of whether automated key rotations was worth applying as a way to improve the security in a CDE pipeline. Results. With the help of tools like cURL and sshpass we managed to automate the key rotation. When we measured the different processes between no, manual and automated key rotations, the result showed us that the automated process has an average time of 1.6 seconds run time and 1.14 seconds average of server downtime. The run time is 70 times faster than the manual key rotation and has 5 times less average server downtime. Conclusions. We came to the conclusion that it is possible to use key rotation and keep the CDE process fully automated. It makes the process safer but also have the side effect of server downtime.

An integrated systems approach to QFD

Bouchereau, Vivianne January 2000 (has links)
This thesis reviews Quality Function Deployment (QFD) and its relation with the Total Quality Management philosophy. In particular the thesis focuses on the inherent drawbacks of QFD and it investigates potential techniques and methods that could be integrated with QFD to overcome some of its problems. Fuzzy Logic/Fuzzy Sets and the Taguchi Method are identified as techniques and methods to be incorporated within the QFD process to provide a more consistent, quantitative and rigorous method to analyse subjective data in the QFD charts. Two approaches are developed that integrate Fuzzy Logic and Fuzzy Set theory with QFD to identify and rectify inconsistencies in the input data in the QFD charts. Another approach that integrates the Taguchi Method and QFD is further developed to set more precise technical target values in the QFD chart. Case studies are used to illustrate the results of the developed Fuzzy-QFD and the QFD-Taguchi approaches. The synergistic approaches take into account nteractions between requirements, which are not utilised in the traditional QFD charts. In addition, it was found that the resulting data in the QFD charts are sensitive to the interaction in the correlation matrices, therefore another method is also proposed to detect inconsistencies in the correlation matrices by utilising an inference mechanism and multi-valued logic theory. An integrated systems approach to QFD is eventually developed that forms a synergy between QFD, Fuzzy Logic/Fuzzy sets and the Taguchi Method. This results in a superior approach that combines the inherent benefits of each of the individual approaches. The integrated systems approach to QFD is a generic approach that can be used for other case studies provided that in addition to the relationship matrix and customer importance ratings, the correlation matrices and benchmarking data are readily available. As a result of this research, the subjectivity and ill-defined data in the QFD process have been partially resolved by the application of Fuzzy Logic/Fuzzy sets. The QFD analysis has been made more rigorous by integrating it to more quantitative techniques (Fuzzy Logic/Fuzzy sets) and method (Taguchi Method). It has been identified that demands are dependent on each other in the QFD charts and how including these dependencies in the problem can change the results. This problem has been addressed by considering interactions between the demands in the Fuzzy-QFD and QFD-Taguchi approaches developed. These interactions between demands have been identified and dealt with in the developed approaches, such that they no longer provide sub-optimal solutions.

The subject of this study remains on the principle of democratic management established by the Federal Constitution of 1988, also the National Education Plan (2014- 2024) regulated by Law no.13005, June 25th, 2014. The Law has established in goal 19 the period of two years to implement a democratic management. The research has been supported by the theoretical assumptions of Bobbio (2011) who discusses the state and government types and the importance and influence on constitution elaboration. This work also takes into account the analysis of Cury (2007) about the educational right in brazilian constitutions and govermental interventions in the education system. Regarding the methodology, this study is supported by documentary research, bearing in mind that the research was based on legislation, official websites and institutional documents available. In this perspective, the research development occurred in three areas, namely: document selection, access, and analysis of content. Considering the analysis and discussion of information, the content analysis has been chosen based on the theoretical framework of Franco (2005). With respect to the results, it is necessary to consider the short term established for a great organizational and cultural change. However, after an analysis of documents, the similarities and contradictions raised the need of improvement and revisions of some acts. In view of the nature of a professional master program, a framework has been presented, which goal is to establish issues, indicators and strategies related to democratic management to guide a booklet preparation. This framework can lead the municipal manager, school managers and other members of this process, in relation to the points and actions necessary to achieve the goal under analysis.

Planejamento de melhorias em lojas virtuais para comércio eletrônico na Internet sob a ótica do cliente

Basso, Marcos Luis January 2006 (has links)
This work presents the planning of improvements in e-commerce virtual stores in the Internet applying market research and Quality Function Deployment (QFD) as tools of development, based upon the conceptual framework of Ribeiro et al (2001) applying QFD to services. The use of QFD aims to deploy the main attributes that add value to the costumers into the virtual store planning improvement process, in order to assure the effectiveness during the interaction in the Internet electronic buying process. Along the paper is done a review in the literature concerning e-commerce, its origins and applications, as well as conceptual frameworks to structure virtual stores in the Internet. In the same way it is done a literature review in the concepts of market research as well as the application of QFD in e-commerce virtual stores development, and information technology. After the review, is presented a qualitative and quantitative market research held in a company of electronic commerce focused on selling musical instruments accessories, resulting in the planning of improvements in the virtual store through the application of QFD methodology. The research found the relevance of the quality items of “Security and Credibility”, followed by “Marketing Mix” and “Customer Services” as most important aspects, being aesthetics (design, structure and usability) least important. The QFD application allowed the priorization of the most important quality characteristics of the virtual store, generating an improvement plan of the specifications in order to contribute to main the objective of the company, to increase sales, being an efficient tool for the use in the planning of improvements in virtual stores.

Problémy resocializace vojáků z povolání po návratu ze zahraničních misí / Problems of resocialization of soldiers after missions

KUNČOVÁ, Adéla January 2017 (has links)
This Master's thesis called Problems of resocialization of soldiers returning back from deployments offers an insight into the problems of soldiers of the Army of the Czech Republic. It deals with the integration of soldiers into society after their tour of duty. Soldiers are exposed to stressful situations during their deployments. Similarly, the deployment is demanding for a soldier's family. That is why soldiers can face problems during resocialization after coming back from deployments. The thesis is divided into several parts. The theoretical part deals with the history and the present of the Army of the Czech Republic deployments, the public's view of deployments, the training of soldiers before deployments. Next chapter deals with motivational factors of a soldier, what the requirements and duties of the soldier are and what the care of the soldier is prior, during and after deployment. It defines what a deployment is all about, what stress, trauma, and post traumatic stress disorder are. It then describes interpersonal relationships in a deployed soldier's environment and the deployed soldier's family, and specifies the resocialization of a deployed soldier. The aim of the thesis was to find out whether the resocialization of a professional soldier after coming back from deployment is problematic. One research question was raised: What are the problems of resocialization of a soldier after coming back from deployment? The sample of the study consisted of 9 communication partners, including 6 men and 3 women. All communication partners were ACR soldiers. The sample was selected using the snowball method. The prerequisite was at least one deployment. The qualitative research strategy was chosen to achieve the goal of this thesis. Semi-structured interviews were used as data source. The interviews were written down and then analyzed using open and axial coding. The research has shown that each soldier needs a different time to adapt to everyday life. The biggest problem was the return to the family, especially to the children. More problems arise after returning from a combat zone such as a response to noise and alertness. It was also found that soldiers would appreciate the possibility of longer leave after returning from deployment and positive reception by the public. None of the soldiers needed professional assistance after returning from deployment. The thesis could be beneficial to military psychologists, chaplains, and commanders. It could serve as a focus on preventing problems after returning from deployments. It can also provide information on the ACR and deployments to lay and professional public.

Elementos que intervêm no desdobramento do plano estratégico : estudo em instituição de ensino superior

Gianotti, Suzana Salvador Cabral January 2000 (has links)
This paper is structured on qualitative studies carried out considering the strategic planning process in a university. Its aim is to identify variables which intervene in the implementation of the process using the policy deployment methodology. The qualitative study was carried out using procedures that included individual survey with the persons who are responsible for planning, general and sectorial supervision, teaching, as well as technical support and consultantship, of the many sectors of the university. Description, analysis and interpretation were the main procedures used in developing the survey. Strategic planning, usually described as a process of integration in management, is presented as a resource that enables a college or a university to act efficiently and effectively and react promptly to the demands of the social environment. The policy deployment is presented as a tool which can be applied in detailing the strategic planning as soon as the annual procedures have been defined. As a result of the study carried out it was confirmed that faculty and staff need stimuli in order to take part in the process and that aspects like leadership, commitment to results, effort in sharing common purposes, motivation of all involved individuals and the following-up of the processes are essential to the successful implementation of a strategic plan.

NOSKOVÁ, Miloslava January 2013 (has links)
The diploma thesis is The Theme of the War in Czech Prose Published in 1948-56. Following significant changes after the 1948 war, several thematic forms of Czech prose that are analyzed. After the 1948 war began to be interpreted as a precursor to a future socialist revolution, which had to be the "correct" stories - there were used books M. Pujmanové - Život proti smrti (1952) and B. Březovského - Lidé v květnu (1954). They were compares with dilogií A. Brandalda, Severní nádraží (1949) and Lazaretní vlak (1950). Another section is devoted to prose since 1954, when the artistic treatment of the subject of the war reflected their own experiences of war, concentration camps and life in the Protectorate - K. Ptáčník - Ročník jedenadvacet (1954), F. Burian - Osm odtamtud (1954), N . Frýd - Krabice živých (1956), E. Valenta - Jdi za zeleným světlem (1956). The aim of this thesis is to analyze war themes in the works of these authors in the designated time.
