Organic contamination on spaceflight hardware is an ongoing concern for spaceflight safety. In addition, for the goal of analyzing for possible evidence of extra-terrestrial life, it is necessary to consider the presence of terrestrial contamination. This paper will introduce and evaluate a new method using a direct analysis real time (DART) ionization source paired with a high resolution time of flight mass spectrometer (TOFMS) for the determination of organic contamination involved in spaceflight hardware and ground support materials. This novel analytical technique has significant advantages over current methodologies. Materials analyzed in this study were historically considered as probable contaminants in spaceflight related substrates. A user determined library was generated due to the non-traditional mass spectra generated by the DART. Continual improvement of analytical methods for the detection of trace levels of contaminants in potential drinking water sources is of extreme importance to both regulatory communities and concerned citizens. This paper will evaluate a novel analytical method using stir bar sorbtive (SBSE) extraction techniques combined with analysis with a DART TOFMS. Compounds of interest will include several representative pharmaceutical contaminants of emerging concern listed in EPA method 1694. Optimal SBSE and DART experimental parameters will be investigated along with accuracy, precision, limits of detection and calibration linearity.

<p> This thesis consists of a rigorous development of the direct kinematic, small-displacement theory of thin elastic shells. The theory is developed, so as to facilitate a derivation of the equations of compatibility of middle-surface strains. These equations are developed by the kinematic approach and it is shown that this produces a more coherent
relation of such equations to the general theory of shells, as no special techniques are required. The equations of compatibility are developed again by the formal Saint-Venant method; this development serves to substantiate the validity of the kinematic approach. At the same time, it provides many useful identities which are then employed as transformation
relations, in order to compare the various forms of compatibility equations, as developed by other authors. A general comparison of kinematic shell theory with other nonkinematic methods is undertaken, and appended to the main discussion.</p> / Thesis / Master of Engineering (MEngr)

<p> The Rayleigh-Ritz method of Trial Function has been adopted to solve problems of translational shells under uniform external pressure. The basic energetical expressions have been written in terms of direct tensor notation. The stress-strain displacement relations are given in linear sense. Three different kinds of boundary conditions --- all four edges fixed, one pair of edges fixed and another pair of edges simply supported, and all four edges simply supported --- have been analysed. The stress and moment resultants at different points of the shell have been computed by means of IBM 7040, and are plotted into curves and figures to show their variations. The convergence of the displacement function uz is roughly verified. Certain comparison with other established results have been made. This report describes the speed characteristic and various methods of speed control of DC shunt (separately excited) motors, especially for application in electrical vehicles. The basic behavior of the DC motor is discussed, along with traditional and modern techniques of speed control. As an example, a speed controller for a shunt motor (built and tested by the author) is discussed. Two types of speed controllers for electric cars are discussed, and the performance results for an experimental electric car are presented. Finally, a design for a 24 HP car motor controller using both armature and field control was simulated on a smaller scale in the laboratory.
