An Investigation of the Limnological Dynamics of Lake Manassas

Eggink, Judith 08 January 2002 (has links)
Lake Manassas, located in the Occoquan Watershed in Virginia is a man-made impoundment of the Broad Run river. This lake surface area is approximately 697 acres, and it drains approximately 46,500 acres. Currently, the reservoir supplies drinking water to the City of Manassas and some areas of Western Prince William County, but if necessary, can help supply drinking water to 750,000 people in the Northern Virginia area. Since 1984, the Occoquan Watershed Monitoring Laboratory has been sampling seven streams and eight lake stations as part of a program funded by of the City of Manassas. Lake Manassas is an important drinking water resource for the City and the surrounding areas and is used for recreational purposes as well. It is extremely important to continuously monitor the lake closely so that any6 undesirable trends in water quality may be detected and addressed. Currently surrounding the lake are two golf courses, with two more golf courses planned for the future, as well as homes, and recreational areas. Overall, Lake Manassas is still considered to be eutrophic, which is the same conclusion reached in previous reports. The main nutrient source is Broad Run, but there are other smaller sources as well that are of concern. South Run has decreased nutrient loadings since the last report in 1996. Another conclusion is that the lake is Phosphorus-limited, but at times, the lake comes close to being nitrogen-limited. / Master of Science

Flow analysis of Rimer Alco North America's Refuge One

Mali, Sarwesh 06 1900 (has links)
This study is part of a multi-disciplinary research effort to better understand, document and optimize the operation of Rimer Alco North America’s Refuge One for the global mining industry. In this thesis, an experimental and numerical study of turbulent flow inside a Refuge One is undertaken to understand the flow characteristics through a Refuge One hopper, compare the predictive performance of five different turbulence models and optimize the flow through the Refuge One hopper to enhance its performance. The experimental study is performed using a particle image velocimetry technique for two Reynolds numbers 53,000 and 23,000, respectively. The numerical study is performed by solving the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations together with k-ε, RNG k-ε, k-ω, k-ω based SST and Reynolds stress turbulence models using the commercial CFD code CFX 15.0. Flow optimization is performed for hoppers by choosing different hopper height and wall shape configurations and their performances are evaluated. / October 2016

Application of population balance models to the study of nucleation and growth of bubbles produced at gas evolving electrodes

Hofman, David Lester 06 August 2015 (has links)
A Dissertation Submitted to the Faculty of engineering University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg for the Degree of Master of Science in Engineering Johannesburg 1984 / The rate of mass transfer at gas evolving electrodes has been shown to be a strong function of the so-called bubble break off diameter of the gas bubbles leaving the electrode surface. This dissertation shows how the population balance can be applied to the formation of gas bubbles at gas evolving electrodes. This analysis provides a means of predicting the bubble break off aiameter. Experiments were also performed to measure the bubble break off diameter as well as other parameters, such as the rate of bubble growth, used in the population balance moce-i>. The effect of viscosity, electrolyte flowrate and current on the bubble break off diameter is also investigated. The flowrate and current have little effect on the bubble bi ak off diameters, whi.e the break - - - diameters show a decrease in size with increasing viscosity. The bubble break off diameters predicted by the population balance mode, and those measured were significantly larger than those reported in the literature

Two Essays on International Asset Market and Macroeconomic Dynamics

Dao, Tuan Hoang January 2013 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Fabio Ghironi / This dissertation examines the macroeconomic dynamics under different international asset market structures. The dissertation consists of two chapters. The first chapter is my cowork with Taesu Kang, a classmate of mine at Boston College, department of economics. We investigate the dynamics of the U.S and emerging Asian countries during the financial crisis in 2008. We focus on the bank lending channel as the source of shock transmission and explain how the internal default in the U.S can be transmitted to emerging Asian countries. The second chapter of my thesis is my work on the international equity home bias and Backus Smith puzzles. I propose a model with a incomplete asset market, endogenous labor supply and non-tradable goods that can generate a high degree of home equity bias, even when the domestic human capital return and equity return are highly correlated. My model also generates a very low correlation between the consumption differential across countries and the real exchange rate. The correlation is more inline with data than the strongly positive correlation predicted by a standard complete asset market framework. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2013. / Submitted to: Boston College. A microfluidic platform for streaming potential measurement: design, fabrication and application. / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collection

January 2013 (has links)
This thesis describes the construction and application of a platform for streaming potential measurement in a microfluidic channel. Streaming potential is an electrokinetic phenomenon that produces electric field from pressure-driven liquid motion on a charged surface. The assessment of streaming potential is a widely-used method to determine the surface zeta-potential in both fundamental researches and industrial testings. / The platform we constructed was comprised of three parts: a disposable microfluidic channel with integrated microelectrodes, wherein the liquid flowed and generated streaming potential; a syringe pump to control the movement of liquid in the microfluidic channel; and a high-performance multimeter to monitor the potential signals. The microchannels were fabricated by two different approaches from glass and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), namely PDMS-glass hybrid microchannel and capillary-based microchannel respectively. The measurement was automated as both the syringe pump and the voltmeter were controlled by computer programs. The platform could determine zeta-potentials of microchannel surfaces from streaming potentials following the Helmholtz-Smoluchowski equation. We investigated the influence of the volumetric flow rate, electrolyte concentration and pH of the electrolyte solution on streaming potentials. The platform was demonstrated to be a simple, sensitive and reliable tool to measure streaming potentials and examine surface polarities. / We employed the platform to construct a label-free DNA sensor based on the hybridization of peptide nucleic acid (PNA) and DNA. The uncharged PNA probes were immobilized on the surface of microfluidic channels through routine chemical reactions. Upon forming hybrids with DNAs, more negative charges appeared on the PNA-coated micorchannel which were reflected in the shift of streaming potentials. We found that the DNA sensor using the capillary-based microchannel had a detection limit of 2 nM and could distinguish complementary DNAs from the DNA strands with a CC mismatch from original CG base pair. The sensor constructed by the hybrid microchannel could respond quantitatively to DNAs with a concentration of 10- 200 nM, whereas showed a lower specificity to the targeting DNAs. The streaming potential based DNA sensor enriches the tools for DNA diagnosis, and the sensor is inexpensive, straightforward, and requires no DNA labeling. / Finally, a pneumatic peristaltic micropump was fabricated to replace the bulky syringe pump to regulate the liquid motion in the platform. By combining together three consecutive active valves activated by positive pressure and one normally-closed passive valve, flow rate as high as 464 μL/min was generated and stable streaming potentials were obtained. The integration of the pneumatic micropump allowed recycling of liquids and fabrication of a more compact microchip for streaming potential measurement. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Li, Yuefang. / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2013. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 80-84). / Electronic reproduction.
