William Thomas Sutherlin, patriarch of Danville

Taylor, Karen January 1985 (has links)
William Thomas Sutherlin was born on April 7, 1822 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. He worked in tobacco on his father's farm until 1843. He then moved to Danville and embarked on a career in tobacco manufacturing. Sutherlin's ventures in the tobacco industry allowed him to become the second wealthiest man in the state of Virginia. In 1849, Sutherlin married Jane Erwin Patrick of Greensboro, N. C. Seven years later the couple moved to their newly built country manor which has been preserved as a museum today. Sutherlin generously supported numerous industries in his hometown and constantly strove to protect the interests of his fellow Danvillians. In 1851, he began his illustrious career as a public servant. He served on the Danville Council from 1851-1855 and as Danville's mayor from 1855 to 1861. The year 1861 found Sutherlin expanding his political interests. He was one of Pittsylvania County's two delegates to the Virginia State Convention of that year. / Master of Arts

Danville's Civil War prisons, 1863-1865

Byrne, Karen Lynn 09 February 2007 (has links)
During the Civil War, six abandoned tobacco factories in Danville, Virginia, served as one of the Confederacy's major prison compounds. From late 1863 to 1865, the Danville Prisons held over 7,000 captured Federals. The compound was used as both a permanent place of confinement and a transitory depot. The earliest captives found the prisons ill-prepared. Inadequate food, heat, and medical facilities contributed to miserable living conditions. During the spring and summer of 1864, the prisoners enjoyed some sense of normalcy inside the compound. By autumn, conditions had deteriorated. Prisoners suffered from extreme deprivation during the finals months of the war. Throughout Danville's operation, the captives suffered from disease. Chronic diarrhea, smallpox, pneumonia, and variola were the deadliest illnesses. While conditions inside the prisons were often harsh, Confederate authorities in charge of the compound provided for the captives to the best of their ability. Often the citizens of Danville experienced the same living conditions as the prisoners. Hunger, exposure, illness, and depression affected civilians and prisoners alike. tried to alleviate suffering When possible, Danvillians inside the compound. The experiences of captured Federals in the Danville Prisons reveal not a deliberate Confederate plot to abuse prisoners, but rather suffering brought on by shortsightedness and the exhaustion of supplies in the Southern states. / Master of Arts

The effect of a career orientation program on the career development and academic achievement of students in selected middle schools of Danville, Virginia

Lewis, Jack R. January 1982 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a locally developed career orientation program which was infused with the social studies and the mathematics-science-health curricula of the fifth, sixth and seventh grades in Danville, Virginia. The students of two schools, Edwin A. Gibson Middle School and Irvin W. Taylor Middle School, made up the total stratified population for the investigation. The problem addressed was: "Does the career orientation program, as designed, improve the career development and heighten the academic achievement of the middle school students?" A quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design was used. The instruments used to collect the data were the Career Maturity Inventory and Science Research Associates' Achievement Series. The data were analysed for the three distinct grade levels and used to test eight null hypotheses; five of which related to career development and three which related to academic achievement. None of the null hypotheses could be rejected therefore, no evidence was found which would support the effectiveness of the career orientation program. During the treatment period, however, the program implementation was monitored and the curriculum recommendations were found to have been used less by teachers than had been anticipated. While the career orientation program, as implemented, did not seem to enhance career development nor heighten academic achievement, it also did not seem to be detrimental to the normal progress of the fifth, sixth and seventh grade students studied. / Ed.
