The use of silicone resins as non-wetting files on heating surfacesCastles, John Thom January 1946 (has links)
The effect of a single spray coating of 60.9% D.C. 801 silicone resin, with a 0.3% cobalt on the dry resin basis, on (1) the initial overall heat transfer coefficient, (2) the overall heat transfer coefficient under accelerated scale forming conditions, and (3) the corrosion resistance of 1.5” o.d. mild steel evaporator tubes, 12 B.W.G. was investigated.
Preliminary tests were made with silicone resins D.C. 801, 993 and G.E. 9975, 9982, 9989 to select the resin to use in the above tests and to develop a precoating treatment for the evaporator tubes.
The evaporator used for the investigation was an experimental, horizontal tube evaporator using the two 1.5” o.d., 21” mild steel tubes, 12 B.W.G., having an effective heating area of 1.113 ft.2. The operating conditions for the test were steam, 85% quality, at 45.75-46.25” Hg. abs. and body pressure of 7.8-8.5” Hg. abs. giving an effective temperature drop of 80-85°F. Evaporator feed for the “Normal Tests” was tap water; for the “Accelerated Tests” was gypsum solution, saturated at 55-65°F.; for the “Corrosive Medium Tests” was 3% NaCl solution.
The coated tubes had an initial overall coefficient of heat transfer, “U”, 11% lower than that of commercially clean tubes. In the accelerated scale forming tests the “U” of the coated tubes decreased 24.6% in 32 hours; while that of the commercially clean tubes decreased 47.4% in 24 hours. The silicone resin coating protected the tubes from corrosion in 3% NaCl, boiling in natural convection, for the duration of a 24 hour test. / M.S.

The influence of glide path preparation on the failure rate of nickel-titanium reciprocating instrumentsJonker, Casper Hendrik January 2013 (has links)
Introduction: The aim of this in vitro study was to determine the influence of two glide path preparation methods on the fracture rate of the Primary 25/08 WaveOne reciprocating instrument. The number of simulator Endo-Training-Blocks in each group were calculated at the time of instrument fracture and compared to determine the influence of glide path preparation on the failure rate of the Primary 25/08 WaveOne reciprocating instrument. Preparation times for different glide path methods and total time for root canal preparation, with or without glide path, was also calculated. Materials and Methods: Simulator Endo-Training-Blocks (n = 300) were selected and randomly divided into 3 groups (n = 100). The 3 groups were then sub-divided into 5 smaller groups (n = 20). Root canal preparation was done with new primary 25/08 WaveOne instruments allocated to each group (5 in total for each group, 1 for each sub-group) following different methods for glide path preparation. Group 1: no glide path (control); Group 2: glide path preparation with stainless-steel hand files (size 10 K-File followed by size 15 K-File and finally size 20 K-File until loose fitting); and Group 3: glide path preparation with rotary PathFiles (size 10 K-File until loose fitting followed by PathFile no.1 (ISO 13 tip), PathFile no.2 (ISO 16 tip) and finally PathFile no. 3 (ISO 19 tip)). The Primary 25/08 WaveOne reciprocating instrument was used with the WaveOne endodontic motor in “WaveOne All “mode with a brushing motion on the outstroke. Simulated root canals were irrigated with sterile water and Glyde was used as lubricating agent. The outcome was measured by recording how many simulators could be prepared with one instrument before instrument breakage occurred. The preparation protocol was repeated 5 times. The time it took to prepare the glide path and the total preparation time was also calculated. The data of the different parts of the project were collected and statistically analysed using the ANOVA / Bonferroni test. Results: Glide path preparation with PathFiles was significantly faster (13.3 s ± 2.60 s) than with hand files (25.1 s ± 1.70 s) (P < 0.001). The highest number of simulators could be prepared after glide path preparation was performed with PathFiles (19.2 ± 0.84) (P < 0.001). Pairwise comparisons at the Bonferroni adjusted significance level of 0.017 demonstrated that there were statistical significant differences (P < 0.001) when PathFiles (19.2 ± 0.84) and hand files (17.6 ±1.14) were compared to the no glide
path group (7.4 ± 0.89). There was no statistical significant difference between PathFiles and hand files groups. Total Preparation time was significantly shorter (P < 0.001) when an initial glide path was prepared with PathFiles (12.7 ± 0.22 s). The longest preparation time (P < 0.001) was calculated in group 1 where no glide path (21.2 ± 0.20 s) was present and the Endo-Training-Blocks were left undisturbed. Conclusion: Initial glide path preparation with PathFiles resulted in shorter preparation time (glide path and total preparation) and allowed a higher number of simulators prepared before failure of the WaveOne instrument. / Dissertation (MSc)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / gm2014 / Odontology / unrestricted

Analysis of the Impact of Urban Heat Island on Energy consumption of Buildings in PhoenixJanuary 2011 (has links)
abstract: The Urban Heat Island (UHI) has been known to have been around from as long as people have been urbanizing. The growth and conglomeration of cities in the past century has caused an increase in the intensity and impact of Urban Heat Island, causing significant changes to the micro-climate and causing imbalances in the temperature patterns of cities. The urban heat island (UHI) is a well established phenomenon and it has been attributed to the reduced heating loads and increased cooling loads, impacting the total energy consumption of affected buildings in all climatic regions. This thesis endeavors to understand the impact of the urban heat island on the typical buildings in the Phoenix Metropolitan region through an annual energy simulation process spanning through the years 1950 to 2005. Phoenix, as a representative city for the hot-arid cooling-dominated region, would be an interesting example to see how the reduction in heating energy consumption offsets the increased demand for cooling energy in the building. The commercial reference building models from the Department of Energy have been used to simulate commercial building stock, while for the residential stock a representative residential model prescribing to IECC 2006 standards will be used. The multiyear simulation process will bring forth the energy consumptions of various building typologies, thus highlighting differing impacts on the various building typologies. A vigorous analysis is performed to see the impact on the cooling loads annually, specifically during summer and summer nights, when the impact of the 'atmospheric canopy layer' - urban heat island (UHI) causes an increase in the summer night time minimum and night time average temperatures. This study also shows the disparity in results of annual simulations run utilizing a typical meteorological year (TMY) weather file, to that of the current recorded weather data. The under prediction due to the use of TMY would translate to higher or lower predicted energy savings in the future years, for changes made to the efficiencies of the cooling or heating systems and thermal performance of the built-forms. The change in energy usage patterns caused by higher cooling energy and lesser heating energy consumptions could influence future policies and energy conservation standards. This study could also be utilized to understand the impacts of the equipment sizing protocols currently adopted, equipment use and longevity and fuel swapping as heating cooling ratios change. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S. / The convergence environment has decisively changed the ways of thinking, producing, distributing and consuming television. It is from this context that thesocial TV gets configured; the phenomenon is characterized by the content sharing (comments, memes, videos, photos, montages, etc.) made through the social networks (Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, etc.) and the second screen applications (TVShow Time, TV Tag, Viggle, etc.) synchronously to the programming griddisplay. By establishing a symbiotic relationship between the television and the cyberspace, the phenomenon potentializes and reconfigures the conversation around the television content and the collective experience. In this sense, this master thesis aims to discuss how the social TV reinforces the concept of social bond developed by Wolton (1996). In other words, if the author proposed the understanding of the social bond as a shared experience that approachesthe viewers and the different communities that constitute a society, establishing then a common knowledge among them, the phenomenon not only enhances this aspect, but also provides the formation of momentary communities and collaborative webs in the backchannel. In this context, the social TV actions adopted by the american channel Fox to engage the viewers and the way the publications dialog with the fictional universe of the series The X-Files were analyzed. Created by Chris Carter, the plot is starred by the FBI agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson). Mulder and Scully are investigators of unsolved cases involving paranormal phenomena, known as x-files. Therefore, we conducted a study on the strategies promoted by the american broadcaster for the episodes of the The X-Files tenth season and analyzed the content (comments, memes, photos, montages, etc.) shared by the interacting viewers on Twitter during the exhibition of the attraction. In this way, we concluded that, by interlacing the TV stream and the always on temporality of the Twitter, the social TV reinforces the social side of Wolton (1996) and re-signifies the television experience, allowing new forms of participation, collaboration and expansion of the fictional universe.

ENHANCEMENTS TO THE DATA DISPLAY MARKUP LANGUAGEGraul, Michael, Fernandes, Ronald, Hamilton, John L., Jones, Charles H., Morgan, Jon 10 1900 (has links)
ITC/USA 2006 Conference Proceedings / The Forty-Second Annual International Telemetering Conference and Technical Exhibition / October 23-26, 2006 / Town and Country Resort & Convention Center, San Diego, California / This paper presents the description of the updated Data Display Markup Language (DDML), a neutral format for data display configurations. The development of DDML is motivated by the fact that in joint service program systems, there is a critical need for common data displays to support distributed T&E missions, irrespective of the test location, data acquisition system, and display system. DDML enables standard data displays to be specified for any given system under test, irrespective of the display vendor or system in which they will be implemented. The version 3.0 of DDML represents a more mature language than the version 1.0 presented at the 2003 ITC. The updated version has been validated for completeness and robustness by developing translators between DDML and numerous vendor formats. The DDML schema has been presented to the Range Commander’s Council (RCC) Data Multiplex Committee for consideration for inclusion in the IRIG 106 standard. The DDML model will be described in terms of both the XML schema and the UML model, and various examples of DDML models will be presented. The intent of this paper is to solicit specific input from the community on this potential RCC standard.

Mental filesGoodsell, Thea January 2013 (has links)
It is often supposed that we can make progress understanding singular thought about objects by claiming that thinkers use ‘mental files’. However, the proposal is rarely subject to sustained critical evaluation. This thesis aims to clarify and critique the claim that thinkers use mental files. In my introductory first chapter, I motivate my subsequent discussion by introducing the claim that thinkers deploy modes of presentation in their thought about objects, and lay out some of my assumptions and terminology. In the second chapter, I introduce mental files, responding to the somewhat fragmented files literature by setting out a core account of files, and outlining different ways of implementing the claim that thinkers use mental files. I highlight pressing questions about the synchronic and diachronic individuation conditions for files. In chapters three and four, I explore whether ‘de jure coreference’ can be used to give synchronic individuation conditions on mental files. I explore existing characterisations of de jure coreference before presenting my own, but conclude that de jure coreference does not give a useful account of the synchronic individuation conditions on files. In chapter five, I consider the proposal that thinkers must sometimes trade on the coreference of their mental representations, and argue that we can give synchronic individuation conditions on files in terms of trading on coreference. In chapter six, I bring together the account of files developed so far, compare it to the most developed theory of mental files published to date, and defend my account from the objection that it is circular. In chapter seven, I explore routes for giving diachronic individuation conditions on mental files. In my concluding chapter, I distinguish the core account of files from the idea that the file metaphor should be taken seriously. I suggest that my investigation of the consequences of the core account has shown that the file metaphor is unhelpful, and I outline reasons to exercise caution when using ‘files’ terminology.

Changing faces on children’s cable programming : the emergence of racial and ethnic minorities as lead characters on Nickelodeon and Disney Channel 1996-2005Blassingille, Brandi Naomi 14 October 2014 (has links)
Although children’s programming has been considered to be at the forefront of incorporating racial and ethnic diversity, the roles on television for racial and ethnic minorities have continued to be limited or based on stereotypes, and sheer presence in numbers for non-whites is still lacking in comparison to white characters. Television programming during the 1990s and early 2000s became a key period in history for racial and ethnic representation, as programming as a whole reflected a greater non-white presence than ever before, with children’s programming as no exception. This thesis focuses on how race and ethnicity were depicted on the children’s cable networks Nickelodeon and Disney Channel during this time period. My study focuses on three programs, The Mystery Files of Shelby Woo (Nickelodeon, 1996-1998), Taina (Nickelodeon, 2001-2002), and The Proud Family (Disney Channel, 2001-2005), all of which placed racial and ethnic minorities as lead characters, diverging from the standard in casting for children’s television programs. In observing whether these programs portrayed race in an assimilationist, color/culture conscious, or post-racial manner, my study provides insight into the overarching narrative constructed about race and ethnicity for youth viewing two of television’s most successful networks committed to programming for kids in this time period. / text

The Effect of Operational Speed on the Fracture of Nickel Titanium Rotary InstrumentsKitchens, George Gray, Jr. 01 January 2006 (has links)
Numerous nickel titanium rotary file systems have been introduced in recent years. The recommended speed at which these files are to be operated varies widely between manufacturers. The purpose of this study was to test the number of rotations to fracture of NiTi rotary files when operated at different speeds and at different angles. Sixty size 25 Profile® nickel titanium rotary files were tested, thirty 0.04 and thirty 0.06 taper. Files were operated at speeds of 350 or 600 rpm and at angles of 25°, 28°, and 33.5°. The time to fracture was recorded and the numbers of rotations to fracture were calculated. The data was analyzed using a two-way ANOVA, and post hoc Tukey-Kramer multiple-comparison test with alpha = .001. The results show a significant difference in the number of rotations fracture according to taper and angle. Files of .06 taper fractured more readily than files of .04 taper as the speed increased, and the time to fracture decreased for both tapers as the angle increased. No significant difference was produced by the speed at which the files were operated. The number of rotations until fracture of NiTi rotary files is not related to the operational speed.
