Comparison of quadrature detector and phase-locked loop demodulator performance with LEOSAT applications

Lim, Stephen T. January 1991 (has links)
Continuous Phase Frequency Shift Keying (CPFSK) is a constant amplitude modulation of growing popularity in low earth orbit satellites (LEOSAT) because of its spectral efficiency. This thesis compares the error rate performance of CPFSK demodulation using quadrature detectors and phase-locked loops under varying carrier to noise ratios and simulated Doppler shifts, as might be expected for a low earth orbit satellite downlink. Experimental comparison between a quadrature detector and a phase-locked loop demodulator shows that phase-locked loop demodulators and quadrature detectors offer equivalent performance as demodulators at low carrier to noise ratios for narrowband FM/CPFSK systems. This contrasts with earlier work that shows that phase-locked loops can provide threshold extension for wideband FM systems. / M.S.

This work aims to an instrument to perform measurements in photosensitive materials. To study photosensitive materials, for example, Bi12TO20, it was necessary to obtain an instrument capable of measuring the scale and with low noise, which generally lead to very low currents on the order of tens of picoamperes. To identify located states within the band gap of a semiconductor, which structural defects are generated, it is necessary to have a light intensity with energy above the Fermi level can penetrate into the semiconductor, and the tests were not easily detected by the technique conventional white light source followed by a monochromator. The use of LED (Light Emitting Diode) has shown promise for being cheap and having a much higher light intensity that monochromatic light produced by the monochromator. The instrument has an embedded computer (Raspberry-PI) that performs hardware the control and an Ethernet interface for remote connection. The hardware is comprised of: a power supply for the control of intensity and modulation for the LED, a control of the positioning of LEDs on the sample, a high voltage supply control and a synchronous detection system for improved data acquisition. The results of performed tests with sample Bi12TO20 were compatible with results have been presented in the literature / Mestrado / Tecnologia e Inovação / Mestre em Tecnologia

Performance of cooperative relaying systems with co-channel interference

Yu, Hyungseok 16 July 2012 (has links)
The cooperative relaying scheme is a promising technique for increasing the capacity and reliability of wireless communication. Even though extensive research has performed in information theoretical aspect, there are still many unresolved practical problems of cooperative relaying system. This dissertation analyzes the performance of cooperative decode-and-forward (DF) relaying systems in the presence of multiple interferers and improve network throughput for these systems. We propose and summarize various systems in the view of network topology, transmission structure, and slot allocation. We present closed-form expressions for the end-to-end outage probability, average symbol-error-probability, average packet-error-probability, and network throughput of the proposed systems. This dissertation shows that the robustness of the destination against interference is more important than robustness of the relay against interference from an interference management perspective, and increasing the number of branches yields better outage and error performance improvements against shadowing than increasing the number of hops. In cellular networks, the cooperative diversity systems can outperform the dual-Rx antenna system, but only when the relay is located in a relatively small portion of the total cell area with respect the the destination mobile terminal. The results also show that since the effective regions of the uplink and the downlink do not overlap, different relays should be utilized for cell sectorization in the uplink and the downlink. Finally, the proposed variable-slot selection DF scheme can reduce the system complexity and make the maximum throughput point in the low and moderate signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio region.

Ultra low power multi-gigabit digital CMOS modem technology for millimeter wave wireless systems

Muppalla, Ashwin K. 13 May 2010 (has links)
The objective of this research is to present a low power modem technology for a high speed millimeter wave wireless system. The first part of the research focuses on a robust ASIC design methodology. There are several aspects of the ASIC flow that require special attention such as logical synthesis, timing driven physical placement, Clock Tree Synthesis, Static Timing Analysis, estimation and reduction of power consumption and LVS and DRC closure. The latter part is dedicated to high speed baseband circuits such as Coherent and Non coherent demodulator which are critical components of a multi-gigabit wireless communication system. The demodulator operates at input data rates of multiple gigabits per second, which presents the challenge of designing the building blocks to operate at speeds of multiple GHz. The high speed complex multiplier is a major component of the non coherent demodulator. As part of the coherent demodulator the complex multiplier derotates the input sequence by multiplying with cosine and sine functions, Costas error calculator computes the phase error in the derotated input signal. The NCO (Numerically controlled Oscillator) is a look up table based system used to generate the cosine and sine functions, used by the derotator. The CIC filter is used to decimate the costas error signal as the loop bandwidth is significantly smaller compared to the sampling frequency. All these modules put together form the coherent demodulator which is an integral part of the wireless communication system. An implementation of Serdes is also presented which acts as an interface between the baseband modules and the RF front end.

Development of an optimisation approach to Alamouti 4×2 space time block coding firmware.

Kambale, Witesyavwirwa Vianney. January 2014 (has links)
M. Tech. Electrical Engineering. / Discusses MIMO systems have been hailed for the benefits of enhancing the reliability of the wireless communication link and increasing of the channel capacity, however the complexity of MIMO encoding and decoding algorithms increases considerably with the number of antennas. This research aims to suggest an optimisation approach to a reduced complexity implementation of the Alamouti 4×2 STBC. This is achieved by considering the FPGA parallelisation of the conditionally optimised ML decoding algorithm. The above problem can be divided into two subproblems. 1. The ML decoding of the Double Alamouti 4×2 STBC has a high computational cost when an exhaustive search is performed on the signal constellation for M-ary QAM. 2. Though the conditionally optimised ML decoding leads to less computational complexity compared to the full generic ML detection algorithm, the practical implementation remains unattractive for wireless systems.

Multiuser demodulation for DS-CDMA systems in fading channels.

Singh, Navin Runjit. January 2000 (has links)
The problems of optimal as well as suboptimal detection for CDMA transmissions over an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel, have been the focus of study in the recent past. However, CDMA transmissions are frequently made over channels which exhibit fading and/or dispersion; hence receivers need to be designed which take into account this behaviour. In spite of the major research effort invested in multiuser demodulation techniques, several practical as well as theoretical open problems still exist. Some of them are considered in more detail in this thesis. The aim of the thesis is to develop multiuser demodulation algorithms for mobile communication systems in frequency-selective fading channels, and to analyze their implementation complexity. The emphasis is restricted to the uplink of an asynchronous DS-CDMA system where the users transmit in an uncoordinated manner and are received by one centralized receiver. The original work that is undertaken for the MScEng study is the evaluation of a multiuser receiver structure for a frequency-selective fading channel, where there exists a steady specular path and two fading paths. Furthermore, the effect of using selection diversity is investigated by examining the bit error rate, asymptotic multi user efficiency and near-far resistance of the proposed detector structure. These results are confirmed both analytically and by simulation in the thesis. An investigation is also conducted into the application of neural networks to the problem of multiuser detection in code division multiple access systems. The neural network will be used as a classifier in an adaptive receiver which incorporates an extended Kalman filter for joint amplitude and delay estimation. Finally, some open problems for future research will be pointed out in the thesis. Keywords: AWGN channel , DS-CDMA system, frequency-selective, multi user demodulation, asymptotic multiuser efficiency, near-far resistance, neural network, Kalman filter. / Thesis (M.Sc.Eng.)-University of Natal, Durban, 2000.

Robust wireless communications under co-channel interference and jamming

M.M., Galib Asadullah 31 March 2008 (has links)
Interference and jamming severely disrupt our ability to communicate by decreasing the effective signal-to-noise ratio and by making parameter estimation difficult at the receiver. The objective of this research work is to design robust wireless systems and algorithms to suppress the adverse effects of non-intentional co-channel interference (CCI) or intentional jamming. In particular, we develop chip-combining schemes with timing, channel, and noise-power estimation techniques, all of which mitigate CCI or jamming. We also exploit the spatial diversity and iterative receiver techniques for this purpose. Most of the existing timing estimation algorithms are robust against either large frequency offsets or CCI, but not against both at the same time. Hence, we develop a new frame boundary estimation method that is robust in the presence of severe co-channel interference and large carrier-frequency offsets. To solve the high peak-to-average-power ratio problem of a multicarrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) system and enhance its robustness against fading and jamming, we propose a constant-envelope MC-CDMA system employing cyclic delay diversity (CDD) as transmit diversity. We analyze the diversity order, coding gain, and bit-error rate upper bound. We also propose a blind, accurate, and computationally efficient signal-to-noise ratio estimator for the proposed system. We propose a configurable robust anti-jam receiver that estimates the frequency- or time-domain jammer state information (JSI) and uses it for chip combining in the corresponding domain. A soft-JSI-based chip-combining technique is proposed that outperforms conventional hard-JSI-based chip combining. We also derive a chip combiner that provides sufficient statistics to the decoder. Channel estimation is necessary for coherent signal detection and JSI estimation. Conversely, knowledge of the jamming signal power and JSI of different subcarriers can improve the accuracy of the channel estimates. Hence, we propose joint iterative estimation of the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel coefficients, jamming power, and JSI for a coded MC-CDMA MIMO system operating under jamming and a time-varying frequency-selective fading channel. Finally, we reduce the computational complexity of the JSI-based anti-jam receivers by introducing an expectation-maximization-based joint channel and noise-covariance estimator that does not need either the subcarrier JSI or the individual powers of the AWGN and jamming signal.
