Dialectical Dimensions on Inclusive Education : Involving Students with Autism Spectrum ConditionsLüddeckens, Johanna January 2022 (has links)
Purpose: The aim of this essay and its contribution to research is to identify the opportunities, pitfalls, and dilemmas that can arise when inclusive education is organized with regard to students with ASC. In order to create more understanding of the situation for students with ASC in schools, the study focus on school leadership. Sub-studies: The essay consists of two studies. In the first study (1) the aim was to identify, describe, and analyze different research approaches to inclusive education and social participation for students with ASC, by performing a systematic research review. In the second study (2) principals of Swedish schools were interviewed, data collection was divided into three sets of interviews based on and using two models as tools in the analysis process. The models are the Index of Inclusion (Ainscow & Booth 2002) and three key concepts for inclusive school leadership (European Agency of Special Needs and Inclusive Education 2018; Óskarsdottir et al. 2020). Theory: A dialectical approach (Clark, Dyson & Millward 1995; 1998) or the dilemma perspective (Nilholm 2003) have been used as a theoretical lens. This approach aims to provide a dynamic and abductive reasoning for the overall analysis in the essay, since inclusive education appears to create dilemmas when societal cultures and norms, bureaucracy, and structures meet. The analysis demonstrates that inclusive processes appear as dilemma-creating at different levels in the system and addresses democracy in terms of social justice. Method: Crystallization is a term that relates to the practice of using multiple data sources and results, research approaches and lenses (Ellingson 2008; Tracy 2010), which leads to a more complex understanding being opened up in the overall analysis. Knowledge contribution: Inclusion is mainly interpreted as the students’ experience of being socially accepted and having access to academic education and the curriculum. Principals’ feeling of loneliness in relation to their superiors—they need to fight for their students and their staff against decisionmakers higher up in the education system hierarchy. At the same time, it is noted that principals have agreat deal of freedom in their practice, but the issue of communication needs to be raised and support for principals is important. A discussion is needed about whose perspective is the prevailing one in decisionmaking processes in schools and in the school system. Limitations: The data collection of the second study (2) took place via virtual meetings due to the pandemic. Virtual meetings are limited by the lack of being able to observe the interviewee's body language and nonverbal communication, as well as a small sample of respondents. These limitations affect the essay in general and thus to some extent reduce the possibility of generalizing the results. Practical implications: This essay can contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the inclusion concept in relation to students with ASC. It can potentially initiate forums for further discussions on the working conditions of principals in relation to their responsibilities and the expectations placed upon them. In addition, to conduct a continuous discussion about the importance of authenticity and accountability for all professionals in the school and its stakeholders. Development and improvement of structures that facilitate the inclusion of the student voice in decision-making processes are also seen as important. /
Incorrect ISBN in publication: 987-91-7877-319-0 (print), 987-91-7877-320-6 (pdf)

Leveraging Recurrent Neural Networks for Predicting Suicidal Ideation: Advancing the Analysis of Ecological Momentary Assessment DataChoo, Tse-Hwei January 2025 (has links)
Introduction: Understanding the temporal dynamics of mental health conditions, such as suicidal ideation (SI), is critical for advancing research and clinical interventions. Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) is a method of increasing relevance for capturing such data over time, within participants daily lives. However, traditional analytical methods often fail to capture the episodic nature and complex temporal dependencies inherent in EMA mental health data. This project investigates the application of recurrent neural networks (RNNs) to EMA data to improve the prediction and understanding of SI, leveraging their ability to model sequential, high-dimensional data.
Methods: Data for this study were drawn from a randomized controlled trial examining the effects of dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) and SSRI medication on SI in individuals with borderline personality disorder. Participants provided EMA responses multiple times per day over a period at baseline and again post-treatment. RNNs were trained on a portion of each participant’s baseline EMA data with EMA as the outcome, using various baseline and time-varying predictors. Predicted EMA SI values were then generated for a baseline EMA testing dataset, and for the post-treatment EMA period, These predicted SI values were examined to assess the accuracy of the RNN modeling. Baseline testing accuracy was compared to traditional mixed-effects models (MEMs) to demonstrate RNNs feasibility as an alternative for learning and predicting SI time series. Additionally, simulated EMA data was generated in order to describe the data conditions under which RNNs are most useful in modeling EMA data. Furthermore, post-treatment EMA SI predictions were explored to assess the long-term predictive capabilities of RNNs and investigate the prospects of using RNNs to draw causal or mechanistic insights.
Results: Key findings underscore the potential of RNNs in mental health research. At baseline, RNNs consistently outperformed MEMs in predicting SI, demonstrating their ability to model complex temporal dependencies and account for within- and between-subject variance. The simulated data analysis highlighted conditions under which RNNs excel, including the use of time-varying predictors and the availability of sufficient longitudinal data, offering guidance for future RNN use. The post-treatment analysis revealed that RNNs continued to provide reasonably accurate predictions, showcasing their robustness even when data were temporally distant from the training period, and following treatment interventions. Furthermore, differences in prediction accuracy between the DBT and SSRI treatment groups suggested that these interventions may uniquely influence SI dynamics in ways that RNN predictions may help to illuminate. Variables associated with prediction error differences provided further insight into treatment-specific mechanisms, highlighting the potential for RNNs to uncover nuanced effects not readily captured by traditional methods.
Conclusion: This dissertation advances the understanding of SI as a dynamic and context-dependent mental health outcome. By integrating EMA with RNN-based modeling, it addresses critical gaps in the analysis of temporal mental health data, offering novel insights into both the evolution of SI and the effects of therapeutic interventions. These findings underscore the potential of machine learning techniques to enhance EMA's utility, paving the way for future research and clinical applications aimed at improving mental health outcomes.

What counts as knowledge? : parameters of validity for the meaning and representation of a contingency theory in the organisation and management accounting literatureGreen, Miriam January 2013 (has links)
The main problem posed in this thesis is an epistemological one to do with what counts as knowledge in the organisation/management and management accounting areas of scholarship. This question arose regarding discrepancies between an original text, Burns and Stalker's The Management of Innovation (1961, 1966, 1994), and longstanding representations in the mainstream literature. The discrepancies were between the largely objectivist representations focussing on the relationship between organisation structure and environmental contingency, while omitting subjectivist factors and organisational processes, also significant in Burns and Stalker's analysis. The analysis in this thesis is concerned with two main questions: the similarities and differences between The Management of Innovation and mainstream representations; and explanations for these, particularly for the differences. The analytical framework is critical realist theory underpinned by an Hegelian dialectical methodology, looking at phenomena from different perspectives with inconsistencies addressed by a more holistic analysis. This thesis is based on a non-linear, multi-angled approach, which examines each of the two questions from different perspectives through two dialectical circles. A detailed analysis of Burns and Stalker's work and mainstream representations enabled clarity regarding the different foci in the two sets of texts. The absenting of human factors and organisational processes in much mainstream scholarship was found to extend beyond representations of Burns and Stalker's work to orthodox scholarship more widely, despite strong and persistent critiques from within the field. The dialectical opposition constructed between objectivist and subjectivist factors was investigated further and linked to attitudes regarding the commensurability of different approaches in the social sciences, particularly in the organisation/management and management accounting fields. It is suggested that this opposition is based on a particular view of science and scientific method. A broader interpretation however shows that science is also influenced by researchers' subjectivities. This has led to an argument for the complementary, more holistic approaches already present in the field becoming more widespread in the interests of more sustainable and emancipatory knowledge.

IS-implementation : a tri-motors theory of organizational change : case study of how an IT-enabled process of organizational change because of the presence of a teleological, life-cycle, and dialectical motor unfolds within a Dutch government organizationWinkel, Geellis January 2010 (has links)
The reason for the study is that IT-enabled organizational change processes such as information system implementations have high costs and disappointing results. Studies to identify causes of the mentioned failures are mainly based on a variance approach. This study applies another approach which is not yet performed in this field of research and affects several themes. Based on a process approach data is compared with ideal-process theories to identify the generative mechanisms causing the unfolding of the process. Thus, the study identifies a recipe and not the ingredients.

Theodor W. Adorno (1903-1969) puts forward a philosophy whose central problems concern social reality. From this same perspective, I aim to demonstrate, through the presentation of few theoretical models, how these problems are historically determined and how the search for their solutions imposes the task of self-criticism upon philosophy. This self-critique aims to correct certain excesses of the identity theory of truth for which philosophy is responsible historically and theoretically. Throughout this development, I argue that the Adornian model carries out a “determinate negation” of the concept of social totality. In this negation, Adorno guides thinking towards an awareness and knowledge of the heterogeneous elements of reality. I argue that this allows conscienceness to open itself to the most important aspect of philosophical experience: the possibility of acknowledging one’s mistakes and of correcting them.

January 2010 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: The purpose of this work was originated from the notice of the emphasis the discussion related to environmental issues has received in the media, the scientific community and also in the routine of teachers in class through transversal themes suggested in the National Curriculum Parameters - NCP (in Portuguese, Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais - PCN). Among these so-called themes there is the ―environment‖, which exposes a conception of sustainable development that is understood as the possible way to facing the recent environmental debate. Thus, the goal of this work is to study the appropriation of sustainable development conception the NCP do, as well as to discuss its limits and possibilities related to environmental discussion. Having a theoretical e bibliographical basis, this research was initiated by going deeply in the concept of sustainable development. We started our work from the conception of development in the capitalist production mode, as well as the purpose of sustainability that qualifies the second term. From this perspective the following contradiction was perceived: development in capitalism means economic growing, profit, both based on human and nature exploitation; sustainability includes nature preservation by rational resources use and life quality for everyone. For this reasons, it was descried that the discussions of the NCP do not contemplate this contradiction, but merely allude to it, suggesting the use of the term sustainability instead of sustainable development. In order to proceed with this analysis, the problem was approached from the dialectical contradiction between its historical, economical and social dimensions in the teaching context, based on philosophical, methodological e logical fundaments expressed in dialectical historical materialism. It can be concluded that, despite the... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Mestre

Entre e vá para o diacho: O morro dos ventos uivantes enquanto obra dialética / Walk in and go to the deuce: Wuthering Heights as a dialectical workOliveira, Vinícius Domingos de 30 October 2017 (has links)
This work aims at analysing the novel Wuthering Heights, by Emily Brontë, having as focus its internal contradictions, which, put together, were named structure of tensions. It is that structure of tensions that transforms the novel into a dialectical work, in which the tensions exist not only as far as the content is concerned, but also its form. Our study focuses, respectively, on the issue of style and also on the issue of the narrative structure, aware that there are other issues of interest, but seeing in them a more primary importance, because they are connected to more immediate formal aspects. At first, we sought to understand the functioning of the tensions that different gothic, mythical and phantasmagorical forms cause on the novels realist fabric. Secondly, our goal was to comprehend the problematics of the narrative focus, concentrating specially on the unreliable discourse of Lockwood, the primary narrator, to which critics have not paid due attention. Lastly, we sought to argue that Emily Brontës work is not only born from a socio-historical crisis, but that it also puts in evidence aspects of the crisis of the novel form, managing to expose some of its ideological limits.

Plant variety and invention are two legal concepts which regulate the intellectual property of varietal innovations. These two legal constructs are in line with the scientific precepts of biology. Moreover, they accommodate the economic needs of the actors involved. These two elements demonstrate that the relation between intellectual property law and the context of varietal creation is built on a dialectical interaction. The choice of intellectual property law depends on the benefits breeders wish to put forward. The coexistence of property rights is subject to the ownership strategies implemented by the actors. These strategies can show limitations: corporate concentration and loss of plant biodiversity. These limits are studied in terms of competition law and in terms of ecological sustainability.

Duas revoluções: o percurso estético-político na literatura de John Reed / Two revolutions: The aesthetical and political development in John Reeds literatureBustamante, Fernando 24 June 2014 (has links)
A study regarding the aesthetical and political development within the work of John Silar Reed (1897-1920) based upon, fundamentally, two of his books: his first one, Insurgent Mexico (1914), and the last one published in his lifetime, Ten Days that Shook the World (1919). From the dialetical-materialistic standpoint, the study approaches John Reeds life and tries to demonstrate, through a compared Reading between these two books, how the transformation in the authors political view is related to the aesthetical transformation in his writing and literary composition. John Reed works reception and criticism is also critically regarded
