The job markets demands regarding medication administration are increasing. Nursing researchers and professionals agree that knowledge plays a paramount role in this context. However, research has revealed knowledge deficits among nurses in questions that are essential for safe medication administration. This study aimed to describe the use of the Teleduc environment for teaching medication administration to nursing undergraduate students. The specific aims were to: describe the creation cycle of the Medication Administration" module, implement the module among students, as well as follow and evaluate both students and module. This descriptive study was carried out with 25 students registered in the course Nursing fundamentals for the care process II", which the module was part of. The module was created according to the following cycle: survey of objectives, content organization, media selection, creation of teaching units (called pharmacological aspects; nursing orientations and information sources for safe medication administration; material preparation for administering injectable drugs; intradermal / subcutaneous / intra-muscular and endovenous medication administration) and follow-up of student and module evolution. Then, 10 specialists evaluated the module and a pilot study was conducted with 5 students. After finishing the suggested corrections, the module was implemented from August 01, 2005 till October 18, 2005. The module consisted of 6 distance classes, 4 presential meetings and 5 nursing lab training periods, totaling 50 hours. The following sequence was adopted in the teaching strategy: access to class contents, exercise solution, chats and discussions forums. As a result, we found 501 accesses to the content, 682 to the exercises, 164 to the chats and 111 to the discussion forums, totaling 1468 accesses or 58.32 per student. The students average final score was 8.76. With respect to the module evaluation, positive aspects were contents, the instructors performance and the images demonstrating a direct relation with contents. The negative aspects mentioned were difficulties to access the module at home and problems with the informatics lab. The challenge to develop this module and implement it in a course evidenced the importance of joining distance education, technological resources and the medication administration theme.

Aprendizagem de conceitos químicos num curso EaD: contribuições da Teoria da Atividade / Learning of chemical concepts in a Distance Education course: contributions of Teaching ActivityJoão Ricardo Sanchez 03 December 2018 (has links)
Todavia, as informações ou experiências sócio-culturais se mostraram mais evidentes no formato AE a distância em detrimento da AOE presencial / As the Distance Education (DE) becomes more popular many course are being offered in the on-line version, including Science degree courses. In previous papers, based on Leontievs Activity Theory, we developed Teaching Guiding Activities (TGAs) about the indentification-separation of heavy metals and investigated the potential of these TGAs as a theoretical-methodological proposal in a face-to-face Chemistry Teaching course. The researchers regular face-to-face Chemistry degree and his work as a monitor in the Distance Education course at São Paulo University helped defining this paper central question: in Distance Education, how would a TA engage students toward the learning of chemical knowledge ? The theoretical bases of this paper are the works developed by Vigotski, Leontiev and Engeström. The methodology used was the qualitative research, with focus on the Microgenetic Analysis. The empirical field was the on-line discussion forums, where the TAs were available. The TA/forum was developed with distance education students from 7 different cities in São Paulo State. When planning the TA-DE (TGA for the Distance Education), we focused on not having experimental practices as it is common in face-to-face courses because the student would be alone during the activity and would not have many laboratory resources. We could notice that in the distance activity the student-student interaction was not satisfactory as the participants would interact with the researcher/professor. The results made it evident that in the 8 groups, in which the TA was developed, several words appeared on the subjects studied, directly or indirectly, and that in the system of analysis carried out pointed to important processes of conceptual elaboration, some concepts were developed, some were questioned and/or refuted. At the face-to-face education the TA development would be analyzed mostly from the individual perspective and we believe that this characteristic was kept at the Distance Education. However, social-historical information or experiences were shown more during the development of the distance TA than in the face-to-face one

Matching instructional design to field dependent and field independent learners: implications for online design in distance educationParcels, Burtis George January 2008 (has links)
Thesis (Ed.D.)--Boston University / PLEASE NOTE: Boston University Libraries did not receive an Authorization To Manage form for this thesis or dissertation. It is therefore not openly accessible, though it may be available by request. If you are the author or principal advisor of this work and would like to request open access for it, please contact us at open-help@bu.edu. Thank you. / Field dependent and field independent cognitive styles are contrasting ways of perceiving and processing information. This study investigated how the cognitive styles of field dependence (FD) and field independence (FI) affect the achievement levels of distance learners. Cognitive style refers to the manner in which an individual perceives and processes information. As described by Allport style is the "particular manner of execution which permeates any highly integrated volitional activity" (Allport, 1937, p. 494). In distance education, spontaneous learner-instructor interaction is frequently neither as flexible nor as timely as it would be in conventional instruction. This research examined the effects of matching or mismatching the design of asynchronous distance education to the field dependent and the field independent learner. Horn's construction of Information Mapping© (Horn, R.E., 1989) was employed to add structure compatible with the Field Dependent learner. Subjects were administered the GEFT, a measure of field dependence-independence. Only those in the first and fourth quartiles of the resulting distribution participated the study. The first quartile was comprised of Field Dependent (FD) subjects and the fourth quartile was comprised of Field Independent (FI) subjects. Half of each group was randomly selected to receive asynchronous online instruction designed to match their cognitive style, and half received asynchronous online instruction designed to mismatch their cognitive style.
Analysis of the results showed that matching the cognitive style of the FD asynchronous distance learner resulted in significant differences between the pre and post test scores. However, an analysis of the test results for the FI learners whose instruction was designed to match their cognitive style showed no significant differences from pre to post test. The FI learners whose instruction was designed to mismatch their cognitive style did show a significant difference from pre to post test. A two-by-two factor analysis showed a significant effect for the design of the modules, but no effect for cognitive style or the interaction of cognitive style and module design.
Matching the FD cognitive style, in asynchronous distance education had a positive impact on achievement for both Field Dependent and Field Independent learners as measured from pre to post test. / 2031-01-02

Teleducação interativa no transtorno fonológico: desempenho de alunos com e sem a utilização de uma mídia eletrônica / Interactive tele-education in phonological disorder: students performance with and without the utilization of an electronic mediaMarina Jorge Pulga 26 May 2011 (has links)
The creation of new educational strategies based on technology is the essence of Tele-education Interactive. The resources are diverse, bringing together the use of objects of learning, videoconferencing and systems based on internet. The objective of this paper consisted on the application and analysis of a Distance Education model in the area of Child Language, more specifically to the Phonological Disorder, comparing the students´ performance of three public universities of the State of São Paulo. Participated of these project 60 students of the 4th year of the Speech Therapist course, being 30 from the control group (CG) and 30 from the experimental group (EG), which were evaluated on a presence way, by means of written assessment protocol and the EG received a copy of an electronic media, a CD-ROM previously elaborated. Was established one month so that the students could explore the material, but the CG didnt receive the CD-ROM, just continued exposed to traditional education. As a result it was concluded that most of the EG students improved their performance after the period of using the CD-ROM and the suggested material as a Tele-education could be recommended to complement the traditional teaching, providing to the students a interactive course via self-learning.

This Master’s thesis had as study object the analysis of the students-teachers’ comprehension in relation to the learning portfolio and the reflexive synthesis in the learning process of the Pedagogy Distance course of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. The observation of the students-teachers’ written productions was done from Jean Piaget’s concept of awareness. The data collection was done through the students-teachers’ written records on Moodle platform and organized with the support of softwares NVivo and CHIC. In this way, it was possible to perform two studies, based on the data observations. Through NVivo, surveys and interpretations of the information were done. With CHIC, it was possible to interpret the relations of similarities and implications among meaning, learning and difficulties understood by the students-teachers about the portfolio and the synthesis. As a result of the analysis, it was possible to verify that the students-teachers understand the learning portfolio as a tool of fundamental relevance for writing the reflexive synthesis and that the written production of the learning instruments is seen as a way of substantial interest for the articulation between the theory proposed in the course and the practice in classroom.

Going Public in an Age of Digital Anxiety: How Students Negotiate the Topoi of Online Writing EnvironmentsGold, David, Garcia, Merideth, Knutson, Anna V. 01 January 2019 (has links)
Though composition studies has long sought to leverage new technologies of literacy to help students go public, we remain anxious about our ability to do so, as students commonly enter our classrooms already composing for diverse public audiences in a variety of digital contexts. Yet students, too, are often anxious about these new modes of composition, which circulate in a destabilized rhetorical environment where traditional understandings of authority, argument, and audience no longer hold. This article identifies five topoi of this new rhetorical landscape—presence, persistence, permeability, promiscuity, and power—describing the anxieties and affordances they present for student writers, the dispositions toward writing they foster, and the challenges and opportunities they pose for composition. This framework provides a critical vocabulary for compositionists seeking to help students negotiate emerging networked publics.

A Qualitative Exploratory Single Case Study of Faculty of a College of Business: Attitudes, Perceptions, and Concerns Related to Distance LearningUnknown Date (has links)
With the ever-evolving advancements in technology, public not-for profit higher educational institutions have experienced a significant increase in the demand for distance learning. As a result, with the changing needs of students and institutions’ ambition to remain competitive and relevant in the industry of higher education, public not-for profit higher education institutions are continuously thriving to ensure that they are offering the best quality of education that can be provided for purposes of distance learning. When considering faculty, faculty play a significant role in making certain that the quality of education is maintained and reflected throughout curriculums and programs despite the instructional method selected. Therefore, understanding their thoughts and perceptions of distance learning is paramount to uncover areas for improvement since they are the ones that experience the impact of distance learning first hand. Therefore, the results of this qualitative case study of a college within a major four-year public not-for profit higher education institution were used to determine the attitudes, perceptions, and concerns of faculty members who teach in a distance learning environment. Uncovering and bringing clarification to underlying perspectives that faculty grapple with is imperative for institutions to improve organizationally. As a result, removing obstacles that can hinder change can assist institutions’ administration to discover innovative approaches that foster an atmosphere where distance learning can thrive and increase a greater embrace by faculty. / Includes bibliography. / Dissertation (Ph.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2019. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Social Intelligence of Undergraduates Enrolled in Traditional vs. Distance Higher Education Learning ProgramsBennett, Bo Scott 01 January 2015 (has links)
Participation in, and acceptance of, distance education has reached an all-time high. Yet many academics, policy makers, and laypeople remain concerned that distance education can adversely affect one's social development. The purpose of this quantitative study was to test that concern by comparing the social intelligence of distance undergraduates with the social intelligence of traditional undergraduates at different class ranks (i.e., freshman, sophomore, junior, senior) while limiting the ages of the participants (n = 190) to 18-24. Social intelligence, an operationally defined measure of the construct often referred to as social development has been a popular focus of research in the last few decades, and the benefits of social intelligence are numerous. This study used Bandura's social learning theory and Goleman's theory of social intelligence as the theoretical framework. A 2-way ANOVA was used to measure the main effect of class rank, the main effect of learning environment (traditional vs. distance), and the interaction between these variables on social intelligence. There was no statistically significant difference in the level of social intelligence between distance and traditional undergraduates, there was a statistically significant difference in the level of social intelligence among undergraduate class ranks, and there was no significant difference between learning environments in social intelligence across levels of class rank. The results of this study can provide meaningful insights to course architects, educators, parents, and students who all have an interest, even if just exploratory, in distance education and its social implications by addressing concerns that distance learning environments might impede social intelligence development of undergraduates.

Measuring the Differences in Spatial Ability Between a Face-to-face and a Synchronous Distance Education Undergraduate Engineering Graphics CourseGreenhalgh, Scott D. 01 December 2011 (has links)
Distance education is growing at colleges and universities throughout the United States. Engineering graphics laboratory courses are unique in their focus on skills and design with an emphasis on a hands-on approach when compared to many subjects that focus on mastering information. Most studies in the literature focus on how distance learning has impacted traditionally lecture-based curricular approach and not on classrooms that are traditionally laboratory based as would be typically found in many engineering graphics courses. This study measured and compared spatial ability as it is an essential component to engineering graphics, and has a highly correlated measure of success in engineering and other science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) disciplines. This study’s purpose was to measure and compare a face-to-face engineering graphics course with a synchronous distance education engineering graphics course by identifying the impact of the teacher’s physical presence on students’ spatial ability.
The differences found in the change of spatial ability between students taking an engineering graphics course by means of synchronous distance education and face-to-face courses were found in students with a low beginning spatial ability. Students with a low beginning spatial ability showed greater improvement in spatial ability in the face-to-face courses (m = 3.50, SD = 1.93), than in the synchronous distance education courses (m = 1.39, SD = 2.25).
