The effects of a school-based drug rehabilitation program on future orientation and delay of gratification : a longitudinal study

Tam, Chi-yuen, 譚智元 January 2014 (has links)
While research investigating the effectiveness of rehabilitation programs for adolescent substance use has increased in recent years, few studies have explored predictors of differential response to these rehabilitation programs. Delay of gratification (DG), which refers to the tendency to forego strong immediate satisfaction in the pursuit of larger long-term rewards, is one factor potentially relevant to all rehabilitation programs, as substance use can be characterized as a choice between short-lasting satisfaction from drug consumption and long-term benefits from abstinence. This study aims at investigating the changes of delay of gratification and the relationship between delay of gratification, future orientation and drug avoidance throughout a drug rehabilitation programme. A sample of one hundred and eleven students in Christian Zheng Sheng College was recruited to participate in this longitudinal study with four waves of data collection. The findings of the present study contribute to the literature of risky behavior by demonstrating the relationship between delay of gratification and drug avoidance, as well as the finding that delay of gratification is a changeable trait which can be strengthened through interventions. Further study will be required to examine the mechanism of change in delay of gratification and drug avoidance, as well as the influences of future orientation on delay of gratification and drug avoidance. / published_or_final_version / Clinical Psychology / Master / Master of Social Sciences

The use of the MMPI as a predictor of treatment success in a male VA drug treatment unit population

Priddy, David A. January 1980 (has links)
This thesis explored the ability of the Minnesota Multi-phasic Personality Inventory to predict the during-treatment behavior of drug addicts. The MMPI's of eighty-five male patients of the Indianapolis Veterans Administration Drug Treatment Unit were compared to counselorr ratings of each addict's behavior while on inpatient status. It was found that the MMPI was significantly related (p <.01) to the counselor ratings. The strongest predictor was the MacAndrew Alcoholism Scale which had a mean raw score of 28.55. The utility of the resulting regression formula for giving information about future behavior of the individual drug abuser was also discussed.

The therapist as selfobject within a drug rehabilitation programme

Ingle, Susan Therese 10 April 2014 (has links)
M.A. (Clinical Psychology) / The present study investigates a modus operandi for doing therapy with the sedative-hypnotic/opiate drug abuser with borderline or narcissistic tendencies. Definitions of the latter are based on the work by Kernberg and Kohut respectively. Unstable patterns of attachment in infancy and childhood are thought to contribute to a sense of lack or deficit in the drug abuser. This lack or insufricient structuralisation is associated with compulsive dependency on an external obj ect , in this case, the sedative-hypnotic or opiate drug. In order to wean the drug abuser off his drug, it is proposed that, initially, the therapist needs to take over the function of the drug which is to act as a sUbstitute for psychic structure. In other words, the therapist becomes a self-object for the drug abuser until such time as he is sUfficiently structuralised and relatively tree ot the compulsion to drug. The nature of the selt-object' transference and the therapist's role therein are explored in this thesis.
