A Numerical Investigation Of The Canonical Duality Method For Non-Convex Variational ProblemsYu, Haofeng 07 October 2011 (has links)
This thesis represents a theoretical and numerical investigation of the canonical duality theory, which has been recently proposed as an alternative to the classic and direct methods for non-convex variational problems. These non-convex variational problems arise in a wide range of scientific and engineering applications, such as phase transitions, post-buckling of large deformed beam models, nonlinear field theory, and superconductivity. The numerical discretization of these non-convex variational problems leads to global minimization problems in a finite dimensional space.
The primary goal of this thesis is to apply the newly developed canonical duality theory to two non-convex variational problems: a modified version of Ericksen's bar and a problem of Landau-Ginzburg type. The canonical duality theory is investigated numerically and compared with classic methods of numerical nature. Both advantages and shortcomings of the canonical duality theory are discussed. A major component of this critical numerical investigation is a careful sensitivity study of the various approaches with respect to changes in parameters, boundary conditions and initial conditions. / Ph. On Resource Optimization and Robust CQI Reporting for Wireless Communication Systems.
Adaptive resource allocation in wireless communication systems is crucial in order to support the diverse QoS needs of the services and optimize resource utilization. The design of resource allocation schemes should consider the service type for which it is intended. Moreover, due to feedback delay and channel estimation error, the Channel Quality Indicator (CQI) reported to the transmitter may not be a perfect measure of the channel quality and its use for resource allocation may severely degrade the systems performance. In this thesis, we study resource allocation and CQI reporting for wireless networks while taking the aforementioned factors into consideration. First, we consider resource allocation and adaptive modulation in uplink SC-FDMA systems. This is a combinatorial problem whose optimal solution is exponentially complex. We use canonical duality theory to derive a polynomial complexity resource allocation algorithm that provides a nearly optimal solution to the problem. Then, we focus on resource allocation for video streaming in wireless networks with time-varying interference. To this end, by using risk-sensitive control approach, we develop a cross-layer optimization framework that performs power control at the PHY/MAC layer and rate adaptation at the APPLICATION layer jointly and provides fairness among nodes. Finally, by using stochastic control and game theory, we design a robust best-M CQI reporting scheme for multi-carrier and multi-user systems which takes into account the impact of feedback delay and error in CQI computation. Performing resource allocation on the basis of the proposed CQI reporting can significantly improve the system performance.

January 2010 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: This work aims to the theoretical analysis and computational implementation of two proposals for the transmission expansion planning problem considering several factors such as system reliability and new electricity market structures. It is important to observe, that the basic planning does not consider these issues. Therefore, one first approach considers a reliability criterion to expand the system, so that it operates in adequate conditions in the horizon planning while satisfying pre-defined limits in the reliability index. Transmission system reliability criterion regards to LOLE, which refers to the number of hours/days in a specified period of time (normally one year), in which the hourly/daily peak load possibly will exceed the available generation capacity. So, the planning problem considering reliability is formulated as an optimization problem that minimizes the investment subject to probabilistic reliability criterion. Reliability index for the transmission system is calculated for each configuration by subtraction of generation and bulk power reliability indexes. A composite power system effective load curve is used for reliability analysis of the bulk power system. This accumulate curve is obtained convolving two curves, one of them corresponding to a probability distribution function of the random outages of the system components, and the other one corresponding to the load duration curve. Reliability assessment in the generation system is done using a method that calculates the reliability index through the statistics moments of the frequency distribution of equivalents loads. This curve is obtained by convolving the generation units which are dispached in merit order. The proposed model is solved using the specialized genetic algorithm of Chu-Beasley (AGCB). Detailed results on two test systems are analyzed and discussed. A second approach to the transmission expansion... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Doutor

A General Galois Theory for Operations and Relations in Arbitrary CategoriesKerkhoff, Sebastian 20 September 2011 (has links) (PDF)
In this paper, we generalize the notions of polymorphisms and invariant relations to arbitrary categories. This leads us to a Galois connection that coincides with the classical case from universal algebra if the underlying category is the category of sets, but remains applicable no matter how the category is changed. In analogy to the situation in universal algebra, we characterize the Galois closed classes by local closures of clones of operations and local closures of what we will introduce as clones of (generalized) relations. Since the approach is built on purely category-theoretic properties, we will also discuss the dualization of our notions.
