The Fixed v. Variable Sampling Interval Shewhart X-Bar Control Chart in the Presence of Positively Autocorrelated DataHarvey, Martha M. (Martha Mattern) 05 1900 (has links)
This study uses simulation to examine differences between fixed sampling interval (FSI) and variable sampling interval (VSI) Shewhart X-bar control charts for processes that produce positively autocorrelated data. The influence of sample size (1 and 5), autocorrelation parameter, shift in process mean, and length of time between samples is investigated by comparing average time (ATS) and average number of samples (ANSS) to produce an out of control signal for FSI and VSI Shewhart X-bar charts. These comparisons are conducted in two ways: control chart limits pre-set at ±3σ_x / √n and limits computed from the sampling process. Proper interpretation of the Shewhart X-bar chart requires the assumption that observations are statistically independent; however, process data are often autocorrelated over time. Results of this study indicate that increasing the time between samples decreases the effect of positive autocorrelation between samples. Thus, with sufficient time between samples the assumption of independence is essentially not violated. Samples of size 5 produce a faster signal than samples of size 1 with both the FSI and VSI Shewhart X-bar chart when positive autocorrelation is present. However, samples of size 5 require the same time when the data are independent, indicating that this effect is a result of autocorrelation. This research determined that the VSI Shewhart X-bar chart signals increasingly faster than the corresponding FSI chart as the shift in the process mean increases. If the process is likely to exhibit a large shift in the mean, then the VSI technique is recommended. But the faster signaling time of the VSI chart is undesirable when the process is operating on target. However, if the control limits are estimated from process samples, results show that when the process is in control the ARL for the FSI and the ANSS for the VSI are approximately the same, and exceed the expected value when the limits are fixed.

The effects of alcohol access on the spatial and temporal distribution of crimeFitterer, Jessica Laura 15 March 2017 (has links)
Increases in alcohol availability have caused crime rates to escalate across multiple regions around the world. As individuals consume alcohol they experience impaired judgment and a dose-response escalation in aggression that, for some, leads to criminal behaviour. By limiting alcohol availability it is possible to reduce crime; however, the literature remains mixed on the best practices for alcohol access restrictions. Variances in data quality and statistical methods have created an inconsistency in the reported effects of price, hour of sales, and alcohol outlet restrictions on crime. Most notably, the research findings are influenced by the different effects of alcohol establishments on crime. The objective of this PhD research was to develop novel quantitative approaches to establish the extent alcohol access (outlets) influences the frequency of crime (liquor, disorder, violent) at a fine level of spatial detail (x,y locations and block groups). Analyses were focused on British Columbia’s largest cities where policies are changing to allow greater alcohol access, but little is known about the crime-alcohol access relationship. Two reviews were conducted to summarize and contrast the effects of alcohol access restrictions (price, hours of sales, alcohol outlet density) on crime, and evaluate the state-of-the-art in statistical methods used to associate crime with alcohol availability. Results highlight key methodological limitations and fragmentation in alcohol policy effects on crime across multiple disciplines. Using a spatial data science approach, recommendations were made to increase spatial detail in modelling to limit the scale effects on crime-alcohol association. Providing guidelines for alcohol-associated crime reduction, kernel density space-time change detection methods were also applied to provide the first evaluation of active policing on alcohol-associated crime in the Granville St. entertainment district of Vancouver, British Columbia. Foot patrols were able to reduce the spatial density of crime, but hot spots of liquor and violent assaults remained within 60m proximity to bars (nightclubs). To estimate the association between alcohol establishment size, and type on disorder and violent crime reports in block groups across Victoria, British Columbia a Poisson Generalized Linear Model with spatial lag effects was applied. Estimates provided the factor increase (1.0009) expected in crime for every additional patron seat added to an establishment capacity, and indicated that establishments should be spaced greater than 300m a part to significantly reduce alcohol-associated crime. These results offer the first evaluation of seating capacity and establishment spacing on alcohol-associated crime for alcohol license decision making, and are pertinent at a time when alcohol policy reform is being prioritized by the British Columbia government. In summary, this dissertation contributes 1) cross-disciplinary policy and methodological reviews, 2) expands the application of spatial statistics to alcohol-attributable crime research, 3) advances knowledge on local scale of effects of different alcohol establishment types on crime, 4) and develops transferable models to estimate the effects of alcohol establishment seating capacity and proximity between establishments on the frequency of crime. / Graduate / 2018-02-27

A widening/narrowing area (ZER) of the main channel of the middle reaches of the Loire River (France), including an asymmetrical bifurcation, are studied from hydraulic measurements, multibeam bathymetries and sediment sampling. The evolution of the ZER’s morphology is influenced by the morphodynamics of bars. The forcing effects induced by channel width variations and by bars configuration determine the structure of water and sediment fluxes which affect, in turn, the bars evolution. During floods, the links between hydrodynamics, bedload transport and dunes dynamics adjust to discharges variations and cause bed erosion before the flood’s peak and bed aggradation after. Due to the high sediment mobility, the low flow periods highly affect the morphological evolution of the ZER. In 2010, the total bedload transport reached 480 000 t. The bifurcation influences the flow structure only after the total submersion of the inlet step of the secondary channel. The exportation of the bed-material load toward the secondary channel becomes probably significant after the erosion of the inlet step as well as by the presence of a bar in front of this step.

Courting gender bias: an examination of women’s experiences in the profession of law in KansasLueker, Suzanne J. January 1900 (has links)
Master of Arts / Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work / Gerad Middendorf / This study examines the issue of gender bias and other gendering processes within the profession of law in Kansas. Although women have made great strides toward equality within the law profession, there are still glaring disparities between men’s and women’s occupational attainment. Women enter law school at similar rates as men do; however, they are not similarly represented in the legal profession upon graduation, or throughout their careers. Utilizing a theory of gendered organizations, this study seeks to investigate what impact, if any, certain sociodemographic factors, sector of law, mentorship, and perceptions of discrimination, have on women’s levels of job satisfaction. To accomplish this goal, this study makes connections between previous research conducted by the Kansas Bar Association, and more recent survey data modeled after the original KBA research. Underlying structures and ingrained interactions are examined quantitatively, to gain a better understanding of the gendered processes that women experience within the profession of law in Kansas.

Fatigue experimental research to shear in brigges slabs with pré-slabs.Cavalcanti, Paulo de Sá Pereira 14 December 2010 (has links)
A significant number of bridges have been built in the form of grids of pre-cast beams on which pre-slab are supported, with posterior concreting of concrete cover, completing the execution of the slabs. This construction process has been widely used in order to rationalize the construction without shoring, shortening considerably the time of construction and thereby reducing costs. However in developing the project, it is known that these slabs are elements highly susceptible to fatigue and, keeping in mind the existence of concrete in two stages (pre-slab and final cover) and different ages, doubts about the behavior of this interface with respect to dynamic loads acting over the lifetime are generated. The scarcity of studies and researches related to this issue led to the realization of this experimental work, in order to study the behavior of these elements subjected to fatigue loading and their final resistance in relation to the failure load before and after fatigue loading. Tests were made in 9 concrete slabs, 6 with usual surface roughness (salience of crushed aggregates 1) and 3 with low roughness (smoothing with wooden spatula). It was verified that no rupture due to fatigue loading were identified and the resistance of the slabs submitted to fatigue loading remained on the same level of those not fatigued, when carried to cracking at the end of the tests.

Fatigue experimental research on bridge slabs or pre-slabs.Caixeta, Edielce Cristina 06 August 2010 (has links)
Concrete bridge slabs, massive or pre-slabs, are structural elements susceptible to fatigue, due to loading applied to them. Pre-slabs, result of two different concretes, become even more susceptible to fatigue. This research presents the studies, tests and analysis of the results about the behavior of concrete bridge massive slabs or pre-slabs reinforced with steel bars and welded steel meshes due to fatigue loading. Axial testing in air of CA50 f10 mm in continuous bars and steel meshes were made in order to build the Wöhler Curve to the Brazilian conditions. Besides that, tests were made in 23 concrete slabs, 6 massive slabs and 17 preslabs, with several reinforcements arrangements, submitted to static and dynamic loading. The reinforcement configurations adopted in the slabs were based on the commonly used in these bridge elements in scale ½. One of main reasons that lead this experimental research development was the scarcity of data about the behavior of concrete slabs reinforced with rebars and welded mesh made in Brazil, submitted to cycle loading. Another reason was the lack of studies about the iteration between pre-slab and concrete cover. It was verified that no rupture was found in this region of the structure due to midspan cycle loading. The welding process caused loss of fatigue resistance.

Desenvolvimento de cereal em barra com gelado comestível simbiótico / Development of a frozen dessert associating a cereal bar and a synbiotic ice cream barHarami, Juliana Bolfarini 06 March 2009 (has links)
Functional foods supplemented with probiotic microorganisms and prebiotic ingredients are increasingly popular as they improve consumer health, and these foods nowadays form a new group of food products called synbiotic products. The present study aimed to develop a food product for consumption in individual portions, associating a cereal bar and a low fat ice cream bar containing the probiotic microorganisms Lactobacillus acidophilus La-5 and Bifidobacterium animalis Bb-12, supplemented or not with the prebiotic ingredient inulin, to verify the viability of the probiotics and to evaluate the sensory acceptability of the products and their physical-chemical characteristics during storage at -18°C. Employing a 22 design, four trials of the ice cream portion were produced in triplicate, all of them supplemented with probiotics: T1 (control), T2 (with inulin), T3 (with reduced fat content) and T4 (with inulin and reduced fat). The products were stored at -18°C for up to 168 days. The parameters evaluated in the ice cream portion included: pH (before and after the aging of the mix, and after 168 days of storage); overrun (after the freezing stage); viability of the probiotics (in the final mixture and after 1,2, 7, 14, 21, 28, 84, and 168 days); instrumental hardness (TA-XT2 texturometer); and melting rate (after 14 days). The four trials of the final product (cereal bar associated with ice cream bar) were submitted to sensory evaluation by an untrained panel, employing the acceptability test, with a 9-point structured hedonic scale, after 7, 28, and 84 days of storage. The compositional analyses of the ice cream and cereal bars were carried out individually for each portion. The populations of L. acidophilus e B. animalis were above 7 log CFU/g, for up to 168 days for the formulations supplemented with inulin and/or fat substitute, and the addition of inulin contributed to the maintenance of the viability of B. animalis throughout storage. The addition and/or substitution of ingredients in the ice cream formulations did not significantly affect pH and overrun. As for hardness and melting rate, significant differences were observed (p<0.05). However, such differences did not influence the product acceptance by the consumer, as no differences for sensory acceptability between the four trials evaluated was observed, and scores were always above 7, without any interference of the storage period on this acceptability. The study showed that the association of a cereal bar and a low fat non-fermented probiotic ice cream, containing 1.5% milk fat and supplemented with 8.0% inulin, is technologically feasible to provide consumers with a synbiotic functional food product, as an option for consumption of individual portions.

On the behavior of a linear elastic peridynamic material / Sobre o comportamento de um material peridinâmico elástico linearSeitenfuss, Alan Bourscheidt 19 April 2017 (has links)
The peridynamic theory is a generalization of classical continuum mechanics and takes into account the interaction between material points separated by a finite distance within a peridynamic horizon δ. The parameter δ corresponds to a length scale and is treated as a material property related to the microstructure of the body. Since the balance of linear momentum is written in terms of an integral equation that remains valid in the presence of discontinuities, the peridynamic theory is suitable for studying the material behavior in regions with singularities. The first part of this work concerns the evaluation of the properties of a linear elastic peridynamic material in the context of a three-dimensional state-based peridynamic theory, which uses the difference displacement quotient field in the neighborhood of a material point and considers both length and relative angle changes. This material model is based upon a free energy function that contains four material constants, being, therefore, different from other peridynamic models found in the literature, which contain only two material constants. Using convergence results of the peridynamic theory to the classical linear elasticity theory in the limit of small horizons and a correspondence argument between the free energy function and the strain energy density function from the classical theory, expressions were obtained previously relating three peridynamic constants to the classical elastic constants of an isotropic linear elastic material. To calculate the fourth peridynamic material constant, which couples both bond length and relative angle changes, the correspondence argument is used once again together with the strain field of a linearly elastic beam subjected to pure bending. The expression for the fourth constant is obtained in terms of the Poisson\'s ratio and the shear elastic modulus of the classical theory. The validity of this expression is confirmed through the consideration of other experiments in mechanics, such as bending of a beam by terminal loads and anti-plane shear of a circular cylinder. In particular, numerical results indicate that the expressions for the constants are independent of the experiment chosen. The second part of this work concerns an investigation of the behavior of a one-dimensional linearly elastic bar of length L in the context of the peridynamic theory; especially, near the ends of the bar, where it is expected that the behavior of the peridynamic bar may be very different from the behavior of a classical linear elastic bar. The bar is in equilibrium without body force, is fixed at one end, and is subjected to an imposed displacement at the other end. The bar has micromodulus C, which is related to the Young\'s modulus E in the classical theory through different expressions found in the literature. Depending on the expression for C, the displacement field may be singular near the ends, which is in contrast to the linear behavior of the displacement field observed in classical linear elasticity. In spite of the above, it is also shown that the peridynamic displacement field converges to its classical counterpart as the peridynamic horizon tends to zero.

Microestructural, mechanical and during turning process characterization of ABNT 1045 and ABNT 1145 steels for the evaluation of the sulfur effect.González Santos, Diego Fernando 20 May 2008 (has links)
This work deals with the sulfur influence on the microstructure and on the static, dynamic and machining behavior of four steels with similar chemical composition. (ABNT 1045 and ABNT 1145). Microstructure characterization of the materials was performed in order to obtain the area fraction of the phases of perlite and sulfide inclusions. A mechanical characterization of the materials was also performed, consisting in a set of static (tension and hardness test) and dynamic tests (Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar Test) with the objective of observing the deformation behavior of the sulfide inclusions at low and high strain rates. Various machining tests were carried out at different cutting speeds, namely 190, 110, 45 e 15 m min-1, for obtaining the cutting forces during de machining process. After the machining tests, the roughness of the steels was also measured. Later on, the results of the different experiments were analyzed with statistical tools and then compared to establish a correlation between the cutting forces and microstructure. The higher cutting forces were registered for the 1045-A steel and the lower for the 1145-B steel. However, this was considered merely a trend given that no statistical difference was found to support any conclusion. It was also observed a stronger roughness dependency on the cutting speed than in the distribution and/or morphology of the inclusions. The steels were observed to form a built-up edge (BUE) in a range of cutting velocities of 15-50 m/min. This phenomenon affected the roughness for these cutting velocities. The behavior of the sulfide inclusions was observed to be brittle under low strain rates. On the other hand, under high strain rates, a plastic deformation behavior was observed with inclusions participating in the plastic flow of the metal matrix.
