Gestaltungs- und Einsatzkonzeption multimedialer (interaktiver) Lehr- und Lernumgebungen für den Einsatz im Bildungswesen Mosambiks - Prototypische Lösung für die Informatikgrundausbildung / Designing and Usefulness conception of multimedia Teaching and Learning environments fpr the use in education system of Mozambique - Prototype solution for computer science basic training

Singo, Felisberto 24 April 2002 (has links) (PDF)
This report begins with the presentation of "the state of the art" as well as the foreseen trend in the education system in Mozambique and analyses the present situation in the area utilizing media opportunities for teaching and/or learning. Basing on this analysis, the prevailing problems and the aims (this might need research) of the study shall then be identified and formulated (chapter 1 and 2). The necessity to carry out the study is grounded by the worldwide stormy developments utilizing modern information technology. These developments do also apply to Mozambique as the pre-studies show. A flashback on the history of teaching-/learning system as well as on present solutions utilizing new media and new information as well as communication technology shall be discussed in the third chapter. To this end, the study shall contribute to identify the lacking of previous concepts as well as to introduce an orientation as to the current world sustainable system. The software for training on the market at present show (without doubt) that they reflect developers' imaginations (knowingly or unknowingly) as to what learning and teaching actually is and how this process take place. Basing on this knowledge, it is worth to work out the starting point as to teaching-/learning methodology before working out a conception. In addition, it shall be made clear (in the course of analysis) that the dominating criterion for customizing a teaching-/learning system is that system or its form that has been realised. The contribution of this report, further, is to make the definition of the media more precise by adding new terminology that shall be discussed and viewed from different viewpoints. This shall in turn contribute to a clear and sound understanding of the media. In the past years, a series of different teaching and methodologies concepts on the design of computer-based teaching-/learning environment were developed and discussed. Among them is the so called "anchored instruction" of the cognition and Technology Group based at Vanderbilt University and the Cognitive Apprenticeship developed by Collins, Brown and their co-workers. This shall be dealt with in the fourth chapter. On that basis, and taking other factors into consideration, such as design, functionality, applications scenarios, boundary conditions as well as user backgrounds, a more effective teaching-/learning environment can be predicted and consequently a concrete design proposal can be derived. The guidelines strived as to the design of context-sensitive multimedia teaching and learning environment shall not only be treated intuitive, but implemented technically in a prototype. In so doing they can then be evaluated and adopted. The so evaluated guidelines and other relevant design proposals that can find use in other areas with respect to the demand of the study as a whole shall make the results of this report. The fifth chapter shall describe the development and evaluation of prototype-art "e-Aula" solutions basing on the developed and grounded conception. The conception constitutes of a hybrid solution in the form of training software that supports both freelance as well as classroom learning. This training technology solution is called teaching-/learning environment and it is being characterised through its feature that it embodies two system interfaces having functions (learning environment and teaching arrangement) that basically refer to the same data collection (media) that can be accessed by the in different ways. This function rates "e-Aula" at a relatively higher position in comparison with a number of learning systems. The sixth chapter shall then summarise the important findings of the report and recommend areas for further research. "Teaching Arrangements" nutzen lassen. Anlage: e-Aula Suite 1.0 (1,26 MB) Nutzung: Referat Informationsvermittlung der SLUB

Out of sight, out of mind : how proximity influenced access during computer supported collaborative authoring

Herschell, Mary Heather 23 February 2011 (has links)
In spite of the popularity of technologies that facilitate distance learning, institutions still educate students who gather together in shared physical spaces. But now even these traditional settings for learning are more collaborative and technology-rich environments. Qualitative methods in the sociolinguistic tradition allowed me to attend carefully to the vocal and non-vocal interactions of students engaged in a computer supported collaborative authoring assignment. Three research questions guided my inquiry: 1) In what ways did students negotiate roles and responsibilities?; 2) In what ways did students negotiate access to their assignment?; and 3) what was the nature of discourse in computer supported collaborative authoring? I conducted microanalysis of the communication in online discussions and face-to-face discourse throughout an entire semester of one graduate level course entitled The Psychology of Teachers and Teaching. My data revealed that the online discussion forum, physical proximity to the computer during face-to-face collaboration and instructor influence shaped the students’ roles and responsibilities as well as their entry into the assignment. I propose a model illustrating how students negotiate entry into computer supported collaborative authoring assignments and discuss its implications for teaching and learning. / text

The creative network: a satellite campus for design education in the twenty-first century

Hartung, Rehanna 09 April 2012 (has links)
As models and methods of educational pedagogy are altered by social media and digital technology, so too are the spaces where learning takes place. Creative education, particularly the education of design students, does not fit into the “typical” higher education classroom, and therefore requires a different physical setting. Despite changes in learning styles, there are many unchanged traditions and functions of the physical setting of design education. The lack of changes has continued to isolate architectural education from the real, urban experience of the city. This practicum aims to address these issues by proposing a satellite campus in an authentic urban environment for the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Architecture students and teachers. I will investigate theories regarding emerging trends in higher education, the importance of place in education, and the process of educating designers. Throughout this investigation, emphasis is placed on creativity, collaboration, and flexibility in design education.

A Proposal Of Instructional Design/development Model For Game-like Learning Environments: The Fid&lt / sup&gt / 2&lt / /sup&gt / ge Model

Kaplan Akilli, Goknur - 01 February 2004 (has links) (PDF)
Computer games are considered as powerful tools to learning and they have a potential for educational use. However, the lack of available comprehensive design paradigms and well-designed research studies about the question of &ldquo / how to&rdquo / incorporate games into learning environments is still a question, despite more than 30 years&rsquo / existence of computer games and simulations in the instructional design movement. Setting off from these issues, a formative research study is designed to propose an instructional design/development model, which may be used for creation of game-like learning environments. Eighteen undergraduate students from Computer Education and Instructional Technology Department in METU participated to the study. Data collection lasted for three months and data were collected through interviews, observations and the artifacts that the participants produced. After the data analysis, it was found that the phases of the instructional design/development process should not be separate, strictly bounded, and processing a linear manner. Depending on these results and with the inspiration from fuzzy logic, an instructional design/development model for creating game-like environments, which is called as &ldquo / FID&lt / sup&gt / 2&lt / /sup&gt / GE model&rdquo / is proposed.

Open learning technology and the rural school: The effects on classroom practice

Richardson, Lesley January 2001 (has links)
New developments in information and communications technologies have rapidly made their way into the forefront of educational concerns. With exciting possibilities for global communication, access to vast amounts of information and new approaches to teaching and learning practices, a small number of schools have integrated the technology into the school environment. However, the majority of schools are just feeling their way and this is particularly so in small rural schools which are removed from the high technology communications networks of the capital cities. This study placed open learning technology into three rural schools where the teachers had control over its use. Using qualitative multi-site case study techniques, the effect of the technology on the planning and teaching strategies of the teachers, classroom organisation and management, changes in teacher-student interactions, student motivation, curriculum enhancement and/or extension, the role of the teacher, and professional development issues was investigated. It was found that the use of the technology had a positive effect on encouraging open learning and student-centred approaches to lesson delivery. The Internet and e-mail were accepted by the teachers and the wider school community and became part of normal classroom activities. Staff development opportunities figured largely in the outcomes of this study being revealed as a necessity for teacher adoption of the innovation. The leadership role of the principals emerged as an important theoretical construct influencing the implementation of the innovation. Finally, the introduction of the technology was found to contribute to breaking down the barriers of distance that are a characteristic of rural and isolated schools. By providing teachers in rural schools with access to open learning technology that can be readily integrated into teaching activities, it is likely that lasting change in attitude to the legitimacy of information gained through the technology, and a greater level of independent student classroom activity, will occur.

Improving effectiveness of dialogue in learning communities : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Ph. D. in Information Systems at Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand

Yang, Jingyu January 2009 (has links)
In a learning community, conventional discussion forums are integral to webbased interventions in traditional classrooms as well as on-line learning environments. Despite popular belief that they are a great success in fostering deep and meaningful discussions and support active learning; research has found that there are millions of messages posted by users to express such an opinion, but it is hard to be directly delivered to all users. Finally there are millions of postings in databases across the country stored away and never reused. This thesis introduces a PhD student’s current research work. It proposes a distributed intelligent discussion forum system dedicated to supporting both students and teachers. The system is developed with the primary goal of reducing the number of problems associated with conventional discussion forum systems in web-based environments and improving the effectiveness of dialogue between students with each other and with teachers so that it can enhance each individual student’s ability to share and learn knowledge.

Much of the courses offered in this mode uses the so-called Virtual Learning Environments (VLE). These environments are gaining ground in the daily lives of educators due to its easy handling and the wide variety of available tools. These tools allow, in general, the administration of fully distance courses with multiple media and resources (forums, chats, among others) for interactions between teachers and students. These interactions create huge volumes of data that can be analyzed through the application of Educational Data Mining techniques. Such techniques can be used to academic performance prediction that can be very useful for education institutions in order to help them to take, in advance, pedagogical decisions that can help students. This work presents a study of methods as Feature Selection using the Wrapper approach and Classifier Cascade that were not employed in other works, with the aim to improve the results obtained by Educational Data Mining techniques used in the academic performance prediction. Results showed an improvement in the performance of classifiers (some obtaining the remarkable mark of 90.2% in accuracy results), as well as pointed out what the resources used in VLE that have greater influence on student performance.

Information and Communication Technologies and the Internet have created the concept called Cyberspace, a virtual place where the sum of all the experiences, knowledge and cultures of all peoples that forms the Collective Intelligence. This phenomenon contributed to the development of Distance Education and Intelligent Systems for Education. One of the major problems in EaD is the lack of adaptability of teaching to students? learning style, which consists of the preferences each student has in receiving a certain content. Thus, the paper approaches a technique of Bayesian Networks to automatically detect the Learning Styles of the students to provide an offer of teaching material adapted to the preferences of learning in the Virtual Environments of Learning. The work is based on concepts and techniques of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to compose a computational and probabilistic model of a Bayesian Network to infer and detect the best combination of Learning Styles. To structure Learning Styles detection methods, the search uses the Felder-Silverman Learning Style Template. To represent student behavior in the Virtual Learning Environment, the work uses uses a system to simulate student performance in an Intelligent Tutoring System. The methods used result in the construction of an algorithm for automatic detection of Learning Styles in Virtual Learning Environments. The results of the Bayesian Network algorithm were compared to the results of another learning style detection algorithm in the literature. In the tests, the Bayesian Network algorithm proved to be more efficient compared to the literature, considerably reducing the number of system iterations that in the end converges to the student?s Learning Style, reducing execution time and increasing the accuracy of the results. The paper discusses the robustness, efficiency and accuracy of the application of Bayesian Networks for the detection of Learning Styles.

Brincando de conversar na cooperativa do conhecimento : o processo de apropriação da interface de chat por crianças de séries iniciais

Bittencourt, Juliano de Vargas January 2006 (has links)
The present study was developed with the goal of braiding the research in Human Computer Interaction – HCI with the Genetic Epistemology of Jean Piaget, in order to outline possible intersections between these theories in the context of a practical investigation. T For this purpose, this thesis, elected the development of a chat tool, with an isometric 3D interface, for children in the acquisition process of written language, named Cooperativa do Conhecimento, as an interesting problem in the field of HCI, that could be investigated with the piagetian theory. The study was based in the investigation of the child's cognitives process while in interaction with Cooperativa do Conhecimento and with a traditional chat. It was made a total of 18 experiments, each one consisting of a chat session, in a total of 32 primary school children. The results indicate that the interface proposal for Cooperativa do Conhecimento, developed in this study, fostered the development of the conceituation process, making, that the children stabilished the conversation as a possibility inside this environment earlier than in the traditional chat and understanded the necessary relations for this action.
