Moral Discourse: Categorical or Institutional?Warner, Calvin H. 12 August 2016 (has links)
Error theory turns on a particular presupposition about the conceptual commitments of moral realism, namely that the moral facts posited by realists need to be categorical. True moral propositions are said to have an absolute authority in their prescriptions in the sense that an agent, regardless of her own ends, needs or desires, is categorically obligated and has reason to act in accordance with their prescriptions. But, nothing in the world has such a queer property as categoricity, and therefore we ought to be suspect of the enterprise of moral discourse. Some philosophers, like Stephen Finlay, have argued that this categoricity is not a necessary feature of moral language, and in so doing hope to have shown that the error theoretic critique is thus refuted. In this article I offer a survey of the literature on this topic and then contribute independent motivations for siding with those who think moral facts need not be categorical (and that a powerful argument for error theory is defused).

is proposed and the resulting performance is analyzed. The correlation decoding rule
is modified to allow retransmission requests when the received word is rendered
unreliable by the channel noise. The modification is realized by a reduction in the
volume in Euclidean space of the decoding region corresponding to each codeword.
The performance analysis reveals the typical throughput - reliability trade-off
characteristic of error control systems which employ retransmissions. Performance
comparisons with hard-decision decoding reveal performance improvements beyond
those attainable with hard-decision decoding algorithms. The proposed soft-decision
decoding rule permits the use of a simplified codeword searching algorithm which
reduces the complexity of the correlation decoder to the point where practical
implementation is feasible.

This bachelor’s thesis focuses on the effect of outliers on the one-way analysis of variance and examines whether the estimate in ANOVA is robust and whether the actual test itself is robust from influence of extreme outliers. The robustness of the estimates is examined using the breakdown point while the robustness of the test is examined by simulating the hypothesis test under some extreme situations. This study finds evidence that the estimates in ANOVA are sensitive to outliers, i.e. that the procedure is not robust. Samples with a larger portion of extreme outliers have a higher type-I error probability than the expected level.

It seems to us the code isn't optimization. A series of optimum group sync codes (n = 60) have been searched out with error tolerance E = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 10, 12. Their error sync probabilities are less than the error sync probability of the TIROS code (from two times to two order of magnitudes about). These optimum or qansi-optimum codes will be presented for application in the second generation of the Meteorological Satellites of China.

This tracking method is advantageous, because of the reduced acquisition cost of non-autotracking receiver and antenna feed components. Further, widely separated frequency bands can readily be tracked, without the complexity of a frequency specific auto-track system. Two types of mobile tracking systems are described. They are composed of elevation-over-azimuth-over-tilt and of an X-Y axis pedestal configuration. The calibration methods for establishing time and geographical references are discussed, as well as the challenges of minimizing the effects of system and environment induced error contributors.

Abstract
In this paper, I will analyze Nietzsche’s argument for a moral error theory and examine the implications of his view. In order to arrive at the best possible interpretation I will heavily incorporate many passages from Nietzsche’s original works so that I can delve into a textual analysis of Nietzsche. Because Nietzsche is notoriously vague at times and often contradictory, I recognize that this is far from the only appropriate interpretation. However, I hope that it is one which has at least some intuitive appeal. Eventually, I hope to prove that despite his rejection of moral truths, Nietzsche’s theory of value can lead us to a sound ethical theory.

An enhanced FQPSK-B receiver using a Viterbi algorithm (VA) to perform trellis decoding is simulated and shown to have a 1.2 dB Eb=No improvement over symbol-by-symbol detection for 10^(-5)5 BER at the cost of increased complexity. A simplified Viterbi receiver with a reduced trellis and significantly less complexity is introduced with only a slight BER degradation compared to the full Viterbi receiver. In addition, a theoretical bit error probability expression for the symbol-by-symbol FQPSK-B receiver is derived and compared with simulation results.

services by users with increasingly complex test procedure for increasingly complex
weapon systems. At the same time they are having trouble obtaining more spectrum in
which to provide these higher rates because of the demand for spectrum in SHF range
from various mobile/cellular Personal Communications Services (PCS) as well as
congress’s desire to auction spectrum and to transfer as much spectrum as possible to
commercial uses. In light of these pressures the industry is in need of a modulation
standard that will out perform the existing PCM/FM standard.
The motivation for the present review and analysis of the performance of various
coded/uncoded modulation schemes arises from this issue. Comparison of the
performance of these schemes will be utilized in the following work to find a suitable
solution to the existing problem.
