The analysis of muscle fatigue variables during cycling protocols to exhaustion (incremental and constant load) or simulated (time trial), and its implications on kinetic and kinematic parameters, has been described in the literature for experimental models. Changes in hip, knee and ankle joints (such as increased range of motion and reduced ankle contribution to the total joint torque), associated with changes in the direction of the forces applied to the pedal (improved pedaling technique) during cycling tests, seems to be related to strategies for maintaining muscle work in order to postpone fatigue effects. However, evidences supports that application of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) minimizes fatigue effects on muscle performance. However, the ideal LLLT dosage to improve athletes’ performance during sports activities, such as cycling, is still unclear. Therefore, the goal of this study was to investigate the effects of different LLLT dosages on cyclists’ performance during a time-to-exhaustion test. In addition, we looked at the effects of LLLT on the frequency content of the EMG signals and kinetics of VO2 to assess fatigue mechanisms. Twenty male competitive cyclists participated in a crossover, randomized, double-blind and placebo controlled trial. They performed an incremental cycling test to exhaustion (day 1) determine maximal oxygen output (VO2MAX) and maximal power output (POMAX) followed by four time-to-exhaustion tests (days 2 to 5) at their individual POMAX. Before each time to exhaustion test, different LLLT dosages (3, 6 and 9 J/diode; or 135, 270 and 405 J/thigh, respectively) or placebo were applied at the quadriceps muscle bilaterally. Power output and muscle activation from both lower limbs were acquired throughout the tests. Increased performance at the exhaustion tests was observed with the LLLT-3J (~22 s; p < 0.01), LLLT-6J (~13 s; p = 0.03) and LLLT-9J (~13 s; p = 0.02) compared to placebo (149 ± 23 s). Although LLLT-6J and LLLT-9J did not show significant differences in muscle activation compared to placebo, LLLT-3J led to an increased high frequency content compared to placebo in both limbs at the end of the exhaustion test (p ≤ 0.03). The results in kinetics VO2, resulting in reduction of time constant (Tau) and deficit O2 with LLLT applications compared to the placebo condition (p < 0.05). No differences (p > 0.05) were found between the experimental conditions for VO2 amplitude and VO2 delay time. In conclusion, this study has shown that the phototherapy can be an effective ergogenic agent to increase cycling performance (regardless of the dose used), and this is due to increased activation of the high frequency bands (LLLT-3J) as well as the reduction of Tau and deficit of O2 (LLLT-3, 6 and 9J), during maximum cycling exhaustion test.

Emotional Exhaustion and Its Role in Service Sabotage among Boundary SpannersEdmondson, Diane R 18 November 2008 (has links)
The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate how emotional exhaustion (EE) impacts a boundary spanning employee's usage of service sabotage behaviors (SSB). This dissertation also investigates how perceived organizational support (POS) and perceived supervisory support (PSS) alleviate a boundary spanning employee's EE and SSB. Furthermore, this dissertation examines how extraversion (EXT) and imagination (IMAG) moderates the relationship between POS and SSB and between PSS and SSB.
A boundary spanning employee is any organizational employee who "engages in job-related interactions with a person who is considered part of the environment, who is not a member of the organization" (Robertson 1995, p. 75). These employees are important as research has shown that consumers use the attitudes and behaviors of these employees to positively or negatively impact their perceptions of the service encounter (e.g. Bitner 1990; Bowen and Schneider 1985; Pugh 2001).
SSB are overt or covert behaviors which negatively affect the relationship between the organization and the customer (Harris and Ogbonna 2006, 2002). Rather than the boundary spanning employee engaging in negative behaviors towards other employees or the organization as a whole, SSB are acted upon the customer.
EE occurs when an employee believes they are overextended by their work (Maslach and Jackson 1981). Boundary spanning employees are forced to display organizationally desired emotions even when encountering negative customers (Cordes and Dougherty 1993; Mulki, Jaramillo and Locander 2006). This interaction between the customer and employee may result in discontent and the employee may engage in SSB as a way to show this discontent.
A boundary spanner's EE is hypothesized to positively impact SSB; therefore, it is important to investigate what will reduce or mitigate a boundary spanner's EE. Two constructs that are hypothesized to reduce both EE and SSB are POS and PSS.
In order to test the hypotheses developed in this dissertation, 490 non-management retail sales and customer service employees across a variety of organizations were sampled. Results found that EE positively impacts SSB. EE also partially mediates the relationship between POS and SSB. The hypotheses associated with PSS, EXT and IMAG were not supported.

The Influence of Perceived Fairness and Relational Leadership on Nursing Safety Climate and Work EnvironmentSquires, Mae Ellen 23 February 2011 (has links)
Canadian statistics on patient safety in acute care hospitals are alarming. Hospital safety concerns are not isolated to patient safety. Occupational safety is also important. With increasing shortages of nurses, stress in the work place is growing. Nurses report high levels of absenteeism of 14.5 days per year. The importance of a just and fair culture and the role of nurse leaders have been emphasized in safety literature. Although deemed important, studies of nurse leaders and patient outcomes are limited. The influence of interactional justice in the workplace on nurse and patient safety has not been studied.
The purpose of this study was to test and refine a model developed from the literature which explains the impact of perceived interactional justice, relational leadership, and quality of nurse manager – clinical nurse relationships on the nursing work environment and ultimately patient and nurse safety outcomes.
The model was tested on a random sample of 266 Ontario acute care registered nurses. Findings indicated the model reasonably fit the observed data, however could benefit from further refinement. The addition of 2 pathways (span of control to nurses’ intent to leave and number of medication errors to nurse emotional exhaustion) and trimming of the insignificant paths improved the overall model fit.
The resulting model indicates that resonant leadership style and interactional justice improves the quality of nurse leader-nurse relationships which in turn improves quality of the nurses’ work environment and safety climate. A positive safety climate led to a decrease in the number medication errors and nurses’ intentions to leave their unit. A higher quality work environment predicted lower nurse emotional exhaustion. Additionally, higher numbers of medication errors led to an increase in nurse emotional exhaustion. This suggests that distress may be associated with making a medication error or fear of consequences. As well, larger manager spans were associated with less nurse intent to leave. As the span increased, the number of support personnel also increased. Contrary to other research findings, this result suggests that supportive personnel may mitigate the effect of large manager spans of control on nurses’ intent to leave their units.

Fehlbeanspruchungen bei personenbezogenen Dienstleistungstätigkeiten : eine Mehr-Stichprobenanalyse zur Entstehung von emotionaler Erschöpfung, Aversionsgefühlen und Distanzierung sowie eine vertiefte Betrachtung der Lehrkräftetätigkeit / Strain in human service work : a multi-sample analysis on the development of emotional exhaustion, aversion to clients and disengagement and a deeper look into teachers' workWülser, Marc January 2006 (has links)
The present work comprises two parts to a study. In the first part, the stability of a model on the associations between workload (i.e. quantitative overload), task requirements (i.e. variety, completeness), organisational resources (i.e. decision possibilities) and strain as well as tendencies toward disengagement in human service work was investigated. This included four samples: assistant physicians, senior physicians, nursing and paramedic workers and teachers. The clearest positive associations are shown between stressors and emotional exhaustion, whereas the quantitative overload reached the most stable results. The stressors show beyond the emotional exhaustion significant associations with aversion to clients. Regarding the associations between workload and disengagement, there were some significantly positive coefficients, yet no stable associations over the four samples. The assumptions of a negative association betweend task requirements/resources and disengagement can only be confirmed for the task requirements.
The second part to the study involved a deeper look into teachers' work based on the working model developed in part 1 of the study. Different school system levels were included and distinctions were made between different types of tasks. The results of this analysis showed that on an organizationl level, the effort-reward imbalance and the (lacking) of collective self-efficacy were associated with strain. Particularly clear associations have been demonstrated for primary task-related workload with strain and disengagement. Also, but not as clear, the reciprocity estimates relating to students and parents show similar associations. The results on the personal characteristics lead to the conclusion that the role of the person in the development of burnout should not be underestimated.
Based on the results of the analyses, there are different implications for in practice. There was allusion to the possibilities for reinforcing teaching-related and inter-class cooperation. Further important implications are the "professionalisation" of the organisation school, combined with an optimisation of the school organisation and school management. The fundamental question arises, whether one would have to refrain from portraying teacher activities as a lifetime career. Finally the importance of the abilty to distance onself and the self-efficacy of teachers is pointed out.

Intelektinės nuosavybės teisių išsėmimas ir jo ribos pagal Europos Sąjungos teisę / Exhaustion of Intellectual Property Rights and Its Limits under European Union LawGorodeckytė, Milda 04 March 2009 (has links)
This principle causes not only legal but also important economic consequences. There are three types of the principle of exhaustion - national, regional and international exhaustion of intellectual property rights. In the European Union law a regional exhaustion was established by a whole series of decisions of the European Court of Justice (ECJ). The main purpose of the exhaustion rule is to prevent intellectual property owners from using their exclusive rights in order to partition the market, to safeguard the balance between the protection of intellectual property rights and the principle of free movement of goods in the Community. The application of the exhaustion rule determines that once goods protected by any right of intellectual property are placed on the market by or with the consent of the right-owner, the right to control further distribution of these goods are exhausted. Trade marks are of fundamental importance in the market. Exhaustion of trade mark rights is an issue most related to the problematic of parallel trade. The Article 7 of the Trade mark Directive, which establishes the exhaustion of trade mark rights, is one of the most controversial articles of this Directive. It was concluded in Silhouette case that Article 7 of the Trade Mark Directive precluded Member States... [to full text]

Psychometric evaluation of the UWES and OLBI within the cement industry / Olebogeng Martin LekutleLekutle, Olebogeng Martin January 2010 (has links)
In order to be sustainable, companies have to adapt in the ever–changing market and
economic conditions which are often unpredictable. The adaptation to these challenges rests
with employees who have to stay motivated and psychologically well. The environmental
working conditions are often undesirable
The objective of this study was to evaluate the psychometric performance of the Utrecht
Work Engagement Scale (UWES) and the Oldenburg Burnout inventory (OLBI) within the
cement factory. A random sampling approach was adopted by distributing a questionnaire
for the purposes of achieving the general research objective with an availability sample (N = 187). The UWES and OLBI were administered. Exploratory factor analysis, descriptive
statistics, Cronbach alpha coefficients, Pearson product–moment correlations and
MANOVA's were used to analyse the data.
The outcome of the study through literature review confirmed that work engagement and
burnout are two important components of employee wellbeing. The factor loadings of the
UWES and OLBI resulted in a two–factor structure for both the UWES and OLBI. The two
factor structure for the UWES were labelled as Vigour/Dedication and Absorption. The twofactor
structure for the OLBI was labelled Disengagement and Exhaustion. A small number
of items were retained for the OLBI.
The internal consistency of the UWES was found to be well above the acceptable level with
the alpha coefficients exceeding 0,70. The internal consistency for the OLBI was found to be
lower than the 0,70 level. Data analysis further showed that correlations between engagement
and burnout were statistically insignificant. Data analysis also showed that there were no
vi
significant differences for age and gender for both engagement and burnout, however there is
a significant difference in race and language with regard to engagement but none for burnout.
Limitations within the study were identified and recommendations for future research were
made. / Thesis (M.A. (Industrial Psychology))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2011.

Side effects of being tired : burnout among Swedish sport coaches / Sidoeffekter av trötthet : utbrändhet hos svenska idrottstränareLundkvist, Erik January 2015 (has links)
Burnout is a psychological concept that have got much attention since it was first defined in the middle of the 1970s. Although the definition of burnout differ there is consensus about exhaustion as the most important part of the concept. Burnout have also been in focus in sport psychology research. Mostly athletes have been studied but interest the coach profession have also been of interest. Research on coach burnout have mostly been directed towards demographic variables, organizational issues, behaviors and emotions and more holistic perspectives covering larger models or theories. The aims with this thesis was to try to fill some of the knowledge gaps from earlier coach burnout research with three studies. Study 1 aimed to study subjective experiences associated with perceived causes and symptoms of burnout and the subsequent recovery process. Eight elite soccer coaches who previously had been troubled with high scores of the exhaustion was interviewed. We found two burnout profiles that matched the coaches’ perceived causes of burnout. The first was associatedwith problems in handling the performance culture itself and the second had to do with the overall situation, including workload, family and health. Our findings describe coach burnout as stemming from a combination of issues, related to both home and work. When combined with work overload, coaches who have problems handling the performance culture in elite sports, and who lack the tools to enhance recovery, are particularly vulnerable to burnout. Study 2 focused on evaluating three self-report burnout measures that are available for researchers to use. Our analysis included Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), Oldenburg Burnout Inventory (OLBI) and Coach Burnout Questionnaire (CBQ). The main findings were that there are psychometric problems with all three measures and that MBI and OLBI cover similar definitions of burnout and CBQ cover somewhat different dimensions. Of the three methods that were tested CBQ seem to be most suitable for the coaching context. However, CBQ also have several problems and other burnout measures need to be evaluated in the coach context. Study 3 focused on the associations between workaholic tendencies and combining coaching job with having a family or a spouse, which can be a stressor since the work situation and family situation can be hard to combine. The main findings were that work seem to interfere more with family life than family life interfere with working live. Further workaholic tendencies and exhaustion was not associated. When interpreting the aggregated results from the thesis there are two main findings. First, the way coach burnout has been measured until now is unsatisfying. Although the development of a coach specific measure (CBQ) is promising, further development is needed, both when it comes to the theoretical aspects of the burnout construct and psychometric issues. Second, the symptoms and perceived causes in coach burnout is highly individual and makes burnout a very personal experience. Future research should focus on both the origins as well as the measurement of thisdetrimental concept.
