Management strategies for establishing discipline in primary classrooms in a KwaZulu-Natal districtPadayachie, Sagree 11 1900 (has links)
The aim of this study was to investigate the management strategies conducive to establishing constructive discipline for optimal learning. The study represented a case study conducted in a primary school in the Empangeni district of KwaZulu-Natal. An in-depth literature study was followed by an empirical investigation based on a qualitative research design employing focus group and individual interviews. The research findings revealed that optimal learning is achieved through effective classroom management practices promoting constructive discipline. A classroom environment in which constructive discipline prevails includes the organisation of the physical environment in a functional way, the consideration of instructional strategies such as teachers being well-prepared for the lesson, as well as class routines and procedures being well communicated. Based on the findings of the empirical investigation, and concurring with the findings from literature, recommendations were made regarding classroom management strategies for constructive discipline in order to arrange for optimal learning. / Educational Leadership and Management / M. Quiet Time Programme (QTP) as a model for managing discipline in primary schools in Chatsworth, DurbanGovender, Lucilla 11 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the Quiet Time Programme as a technique to maintain learner discipline in primary schools in Chatsworth, Durban.
Data regarding the impact of the Quiet Time Programme on positive discipline was collected. Questionnaires were used to collect the data. Data was collected from principals, educators and learners. Three primary schools in Chatsworth were used. A quantitative research approach was used in this study.
The empirical investigation revealed that there are many learner discipline issues that educators are faced with on a daily basis. The investigation also demonstrated the ineffectiveness of the alternatives to Corporal Punishment that are used at schools currently. This study introduced the Quiet Time Model. Principals, educators and learners revealed their perceptions of the Quiet Time Programme.
The study concluded with the discussion of the major findings emanating from the data analysis. Recommendations have been provided to schools for drawing up their discipline policies. The role of the principals, parents, educators and learners play in creating an environment conducive to teaching and learning must be considered. Some techniques to keep all stakeholders interested and inspired in the implementation of new discipline techniques are provided. / Educational Management and Leadership / M. Ed. The study, “Teacher support in the inclusive primary school: addressing barriers to learning in the classroom”, aims to investigate teacher support in addressing and reducing barriers to learning, particularly in primary school. The objective of the introduction of the Education White Paper 6 of 2001 was to ensure that learners with different learning needs are accommodated in ordinary or mainstream schools, with the support of the District-Based Support Team (DBST) and the School-Based Support Team (SBST). Although the schools have established a team to support teachers to address barriers to learning in the class, it seems teachers are not getting the expected support from the SBST. Therefore, an investigation on teacher support addressing barriers to learning was explored.
This qualitative study employed interviews, observations and document analysis as methods of data collection. The study was collected in one primary school situated in an informal settlement in Tshwane South District in Gauteng, with eight teachers from Grade 1 to 7 as participants. Creswell’s method of data analysis was adopted, and the findings revealed that the following were factors affecting teachers when addressing barriers to learning: challenges with diverse-needs learners, systemic challenges and challenges of teacher support. Recommendations from the study were given. Key topics for future research are regarding the role of the SBST and DBST in supporting teachers, teachers’ intervention strategies, training, monitoring and evaluation, and teacher development. / Inclusive Education / M. Accountability and transparency in managing school finances at primary schools in Johannesbug SouthNtsele, Cynthia Nonhlanhla 11 1900 (has links)
The management of school finances is one of the major responsibilities facing principals and School Governing Bodies (SGBs) since the implementation of the South African Schools Act (SASA) in 1996. Schools and their governing bodies have broad financial responsibilities, including managing funding from the respective provincial department, setting and managing school fees, preparing the school’s budget as well as raising additional funds to augment the school budget.
As democratically elected structures, School Governing Bodies stand to account to various stakeholders for public funds they manage. The South African Schools Act of 1996 provides guidelines on how schools should manage their finances - roles and responsibilities of individuals entrusted with school funds are also outlined.
This study was undertaken to determine the extent of accountability and transparency practised by some Johannesburg South primary schools in managing school finances. A comprehensive literature study was explored, encompassing different aspects or components of financial school management such as budgeting, financial organisation as well as financial control and reporting.
This study employed a qualitative research methodological approach. In order to establish the issue of accountability and transparency in managing school finances, semi-structured interviews were conducted to principals, SGB members, finance officers and finance committee members of various selected schools. Data were qualitatively analysed and findings from the study objects revealed that some schools lack accountability and transparency in managing their finances - SGBs experience major challenges in executing their financial responsibilities. Results further delineated that insufficient training of SGB members, overlapping responsibilities and dysfunctionality of finance committees are some underlying factors that hinder schools from managing their finances efficiently, effectively and economically. / Educational Leadership and Management / M. The role of cultural diversity on social wellness in a primary school in GautengNkomo, Annah Ndlovu 04 1900 (has links)
This study investigates the role of cultural diversity on social wellness in a diverse
school setting. It explores the views of learners and teachers on issues pertaining to
cultural diversity and social wellness in the school. An integrative lens encompassing
Hettler’s (1970) wellness theory and Letseka’s (2000) Ubuntu principle were used as
the framework to guide the study. The interpretivist paradigm was used because the
research method for this study is qualitative in nature. Purposive sampling was used in
this study where fifteen participants were selected. The approach used is a case study,
with the case being a multicultural primary school in Gauteng Province, South Africa.
Ethical clearance was obtained from the Unisa’s Ethics Committee. Furthermore,
permission was granted by the Department of Basic Education and the school’s
principal. All participants signed consent and assent letters before data were collected.
Learner participants gave their assent to take part in the study after consent had been
obtained from their parents and guardians prior to the commencement of data
collection.
Data collected reflected the participants’ understanding of the need and means to
promote social wellness within a culturally diverse school setting. It also suggests that it
is possible to make diversity work for, instead of against us as is advocated for by
Sheets (2005). The themes that emerged from collected data were: knowing one
another as well as each other’s cultures, respect for equality and human dignity, loving
kindness and compassion towards everyone, practicing good manners and discipline
towards everyone, positive social interaction/desired attitude and also leading by
example. These themes form guidelines that can be used in promoting social wellness

Mirrors and windows : a case study of the effectiveness of teaching strategies employed in racially diverse classrooms at one primary school in the Gauteng Province in South AfricaNenweli, Mmahlomotse Sekinah 15 November 2019 (has links)
This study used Bhaskar’s Critical Realist ontology as meta-theory reinforced by Margaret
Archer’s Social Realist Theory as an analytical framework to help obtain a deeper
understanding of the contributory mechanisms to the provision of equal opportunities to
learn in racially diverse South African classrooms in a chosen primary school in Pretoria, South
Africa. The study applied Archer’s Morphogenesis/Morphostasis analytical framework in an
attempt to understand whether or not the school has transformed or reproduced the status
quo on opportunities to learning after democracy. In particular, the study focused on the
provision of equal opportunities to learn irrespective of their racial or cultural backgrounds.
Archer’s analytical dualism was used to scrutinise the interaction between ‘parts’ (structure
and culture) and the ‘people’ (agency). Thus, the focus was to uncover the fundamental
factors that enable and constrain the provision of equal opportunities to learn in a class with
racially diverse learners. This entailed the separation of structures (policies, systems, and the
school governance structures), cultures (beliefs and values and how do they affect teaching
and learning) and agents (people such as teachers, learners, school principals, amongst others
and their ability to act (agency) within and upon their own world with regard to their social
roles and positions to stimulate their emergent properties and powers.
In this study, I explored how the emergent properties and powers contained in the learning
resource material, policies, and ideational and agential components assisted in the
production of certain actions and practices in relation to teaching and learning in a racially
diverse environment. I examined these generative mechanisms to identify whether they
enabled or constrained the provision of equal opportunities to learn within a racially diverse
classroom context. Qualitative research methodologies were applied through the use of semistructured
interviews, classroom observations and document analysis as data collection
methods.
At the domain of structure, the findings of the study revealed that the notion of ensuring that
all learners have access to basic education without discrimination of any kind was a critical
mechanism that provided learners from racially diverse contexts with physical access. Arabia
(pseudonym) Primary School had enough classrooms and teaching and learning materials to cater for all learners. The South African Schools Act1 (SASA) (1996) and the admission policy
of the school were found to be enabling factors in terms of admission of racially diverse
learners into the school as there is no encouragement of discrimination of any kind. The
school’s religious policy was also found to cater for the learners’ diverse religions, however,
it is silent about learners who are not religious.
The study found that there was a mismatch between the staff complement and learner
enrolment as teachers were predominantly White while learners were mainly Black Africans.
Ideally, it will be better for the school to strive towards a racially diverse teaching staff
complement to match the racially diverse learners. The current situation may have
implications for the provision of equal opportunities to learn. The study also realised that,
since there was evidence of racial and cultural incongruity between learners and teachers, it might take time for the school to match the now racially diverse learner enrolment with a
racially diverse staff complement. This may require transforming the staff complement
through the employment of teachers who can speak different African languages and can
accommodate and represent diverse cultures in teaching and learning.
A constraining mechanism to the provision of equal opportunities to learn was the time
assigned to some of the lessons. In some instances, it was found that lessons scheduled for thirty minutes were limited in terms of teaching and learning activities possible in this time
frame, thereby hampering the provision of equal opportunities to learn.
Within the domain of culture, an important mechanism that was identified was the discourse
of the language of learning and teaching (LOLT). The LOLT, specifically English, was found
constraining to the provision of equal opportunities to learn to learners of African descent.
Learners whose home language was English benefited more in terms of knowledge and
understanding of lessons compared to the majority of black African learners who spoke
indigenous languages. This points to the need to review the language policy of the school in order to accommodate the local indigenous African languages. However, this may be a
complex exercise considering that the black African learners speak different indigenous
languages.
In the domain of agency, the study found that the Head of Department (HoD) possessed the authority to guide teachers regarding the Learning Areas that they teach, the approaches to teaching and learning, as well as the learning activities that they have to carry out. This meant
that they provided curriculum leadership, thus they could exercise more agency in this regard.
Data also revealed that, although the curriculum was found to be relevant to racially diverse
classes, teachers were unable to integrate racial diversity to the topics covered in the
prescribed textbooks, particularly those that were largely based on western knowledge. This implied that teachers who participated in the study were not prepared for racially diverse
classes. It will be necessary to integrate learners’ indigenous knowledge into the western
knowledge content and concepts in order to enhance their epistemological access and
provide equal opportunities to learn, thus appreciating local community knowledge in
education and development. Curricula should also be reviewed in order to align them to the school’s clientele base/learners towards enabling the provision of equal opportunities to learn.
Overall, this study concludes that, although the school had experienced Morphogenesis in
terms of learner enrolment from a predominantly racially singular to a racially diverse learning
population. However, the apartheid-era culture of the school was still reproduced due to the Morphostasis of the (White) teacher complement, the languages taught and the dominant
school culture that was not congruent with the majority of the (Black) learners. I believe that
the findings from this study may provide the conceptual and empirical foundations towards
understanding whether teachers provide or fail to provide equal opportunities to learn in
racially diverse classrooms in a country emerging from apartheid. I note that this is a singular
case study that is not necessarily generalisable. However, it can provide insights into the
extent of provision of equal opportunities to learning for the racially diverse learner

Opportunities and impediments in the implementation of environmental education within Curriculum 2005 : a Lusikisiki district case studyRuhinda, Bernadette 31 December 2004 (has links)
This study investigated the opportunities and impediments that were present in C2005 and which impacted on the implementation of environmental education in selected schools in the Lusikisiki District of the Eastern Cape Province.
The sample consisted of 12 learners from grade 2 to grade 7, 26 educators and 2 parents from 2 GET band schools. Two Department of Education Officials also formed part of the sample. Interviews were conducted and observations were made within the two schools to get an insight on the position and status of environmental education in the two schools.
The study's findings indicated that the position and status of environmental education in the two schools were low although all the stakeholders had a desire to see things improving.
The study puts forward some recommendations and review of environmental education implementation strategies. It also makes suggestions for further related investigation in this area. / Educational Studies / M.Ed(Environmental Education))

Investigating teaching and learning within three Eastern Cape reception year classroomsMnene, Mthetheleli January 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to explore the extent to which young children in three Grade R classes in the Eastern Cape Province were exposed to developmentally appropriate opportunities to achieve the Critical Outcomes as outlined in the South African National Curriculum Statement. The research took the form of a case study. Semi-structured interviews and observations were used to collect data. Respondents included children, their parents, Grade R practitioners and the school leadership. The findings tentatively showed that this set of parents perceived their role in providing for their children’s developmental needs as separate to that of the GR practitioners. They seemed to see their roles as helping their children to develop social and emotional competence only, and that the GR practitioners provided, in addition to this, literacy and numeracy teaching to their children. In contrast, the three GR practitioners believed that parents were responsible also for promoting literacy, numeracy and life skills. There seemed therefore to be a lack of clarity of specific teacher and parent views of their roles. The researcher found, however, that the children seemed to be given few developmentally appropriate opportunities for planned and structured activities which enabled them to explore the Critical Outcomes, for example, working together, solving problems, using technology. The teaching methodology used by the GR practitioners during the observation periods, seemed to a large extent, to be based in 'talk and chalk' in the plenary grouping. It did not seem to enable the implementation of the curriculum and especially of the Critical Outcomes in a developmentally appropriate way. In addition, the environment in which children learned was not observed to be developmentally appropriate for relevant education to take place. Too many children were crowded into the available space, while learning equipment and materials were lacking. Any competences that young children in these three GR programmes achieved were therefore possibly learned incidentally, rather than deliberately through planned activities. In addition, GR classes in this study were not observed to be supported within the schools to deliver competent curriculum activities to the children. The study makes suggestions to meet some of these challenges. These include improving the understanding of curriculum guidelines of all role players in the three schools, enabling the management teams and especially parents to take a stronger support and monitoring role, and providing and using materials and equipment to promote the use of the Critical Out comes as methods for teaching and for learning.

Text in Afrikaans / Practical research has shown that children experiencing learning restraints may suffer from high stress levels. These children encounter difficulty adapting to normal scholastic challenges and their performance often appear marginalised. The objective of this study is to explore the phenomenon of stress experienced by three eleven year old learners with learning restraints in the intermediate phase.
The literature study on this topic has shown that learning restraints not only affect a child scholastically, but in his entire being. Based on this understanding, learning restraints may cause stress due to habitual underachievement in the learning environment. These learners might not necessarily have extremely poor cognitive abilities, but perceive themselves as incompetent or "dumb".
In the empirical study, projection techniques were mainly utilised to determine stress levels experienced by learning restrained learners, from their internal frame of reference.
