Media in die onderrig van die gehoorgestremde leerling

Snyman, Darelle 03 April 2014 (has links)
M.Ed. / Hearing-impaired pupils differ from normal-hearing ones in that they have neither language nor speech. The result is an incapability to communicate. To overcome this immense problem, hearing-impaired children are educated with great empathy. The teachers of these children need to have patience, dedication and the capability to implement any available means to fulfil the special needs of their pupils. Media gives the teacher the ways and means to introduce the real world and its components to the child, starting with the wearing of a hearing aid. The hearing aid allows the child to step out of silence into a world of some sound. The education of the hearing-impaired relies on the use of media (that is: printed material, the overhead projector and transparencies, the computer, video, television, music, hearing aids and real objects). Each of the ,above mentioned, fulfils a special need in the education of the hearing-impaired - it brings about more effective teaching and learning. It gives the hearingimpaired the chance to be part of the normal living life .

Onderrigontwerp in tersiêre afstandsonderrig

Nienaber, Hilda 18 March 2014 (has links)
M.Ed. (Media Studies) / Man's need for information is continually increasing and this need, in turn, presupposes continuing education and training (Freysen 1985:1). Further study, however, demands a high degree of motivation and self-discipline, and for that reason it is generally adults that register for such study, to update or broaden their knowledge. Since most students are employed and cannot be traditional students at a residential university, they turn to distance education as a result of the possibilities it offers. As a result of the separation between the student and the lecturer particular use is made of the printed word, as well as broadcasting and telecommunication media. Traditional dialogue takes place in the form of correspondence through the post, and it is also dependent on the above communication media. Among the problems that have been identified is the fact that most study packages have not been designed and compiled with the media in mind, and if various media are selected, this is done in a haphazard way. This study attempts to propose a procedure by which the lecturer can approach the design of multimedia study packages for distance education. For the lecturer, as well as the student, audiovisual media offer better control over learning, and greater interaction with the learning content. The student can revise, study and integrate the learning content at his leisure. In practice this means that audiovisual media should be more effectively used when planning instruction and learning (Bates, 1984:6). The distance education situation is approached as a didactic situation and the mportance of various components of the study package as an instructional is shown. The importance of media selection in the compilation of the study package is indicated, and certain aspects of instructional design are discussed. In this study an attempt has been made to show that instructional design is on the one hand a definite need, but on the other a definite possibility in distance education. Instructional design takes place in a systematic way by means of different procedures. During the design process a multimedia approach is followed in order to put together a multimedia study package which will put the student in a better position to learn.

Developing edutainment principles and practices for audio-visual representations of Biblical books

Robertson, Charles Kenneth 12 1900 (has links)
Dissertation (PhD)--University of Stellenbosch, 2001. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The main purpose of the study is to develop a model and to establish certain principles for writing a script treatment (personal pictures) of a book of the Bible. Personal pictures can be identified as the most important component of the production (filmic creation) and marketing (promulgation) processes of a fully dramatised audio-visual representation of a biblical book. The study deals primarily with personal pictures. Changes in the communication and perception of biblical content are investigated. The study focuses mainly on the dissemination of such content through audio-visual Bible products (end products). The study contends that audio-visual Bible communications for children and adults should have an educational foundation. The other main dimension of all audio-visual Bible is the entertainment it provides to viewers (patrons). The educational and entertainment facets of end products are described here as edutainment. It is important for end products to have edutainment value as perceived by socio-economically diverse peoples, of both Christian and non-Christian (non-religious) persuasions. Aspects which can contribute to the edutainment value of fully dramatised audio-visual Bible products are expounded. An audio-visual model, which defines the basis for the filmic creation and promulgation of an end product, is explained and its elements described. The determinants of the filmic creation and promulgation processes, some of which have a greater educational impact and some which have a greater entertainment impact, are explicated. An important factor is to involve patrons in the filmic creation and promulgation processes, and to help them to feel part of these processes. Writing the personal pictures of a Bible book is investigated. A personal pictures model is put forward to explain how the personal pictures can be written. A variety of guidelines to help the writer (owner) write the personal pictures of a book are presented. These guidelines deal with aspects such as writing the narrative, selecting the context of the storytelling, gathering and using background information, using enhancement factors, and implementing requirements of the users. The personal pictures already written of two Bible books are assessed. An explanation is given of why the books of Ruth and Hebrews, one from the Old and one from the New Testament, are chosen for such assessment. These personal pictures are found to be deficient and new personal pictures are written for both books, using the model and guidelines given. An empirical survey is undertaken of the personal pictures of one of the two books assessed, namely Ruth. The analysis of the empirical research finds that the respondents are able to visualise a film of Ruth with edutainment value after reading the personal pictures. The results of the survey point to the importance of both the educational and entertainment aspects in end products. Some further valuable deductions can be made from the study: Audio-visual Bible products are beneficial to convey biblical content to patrons. A model and guidelines are presented for writing good quality personal pictures. Patrons can profitably be engaged in the filmic creation and promulgation processes of fully dramatised audio-visual Bible products. A few constraints have been encountered which have a limiting effect on the study. The study highlights a number of important areas which can be further researched.

Student experiences with instructional videos in online learning environments

Hibbert, Melanie C. January 2016 (has links)
Drawing upon qualitative methods of semi-structured interviews and observational talk-through interviews, this qualitative dissertation investigates the ways in which graduate students in an online course context experience online instructional videos. A conceptual framework of user experience and multimodality, as well as the framework of sense-making developed by McCarthy and Wright (2004) guided this study and data analysis. The findings of this dissertation have implications for how students are participating in, interacting with, and making sense of online learning environments. Some of the findings of this research include: (a) students do not necessarily experience course videos as discrete elements (or differentiate them with other aspects of the course); (b) the times and contexts in which students view instructional videos shifts (e.g., between home and commuting); (c) student motivations and expectations shape how they approach and orient themselves towards watching online course videos; and (d) multimodal design elements influence students’ meaning-making of online instructional videos. These data findings are all in support of the overarching conclusion of this dissertation, which is that students have significant agency in these online environments, and their meaning-making of online videos may not align with designers’ intentions. This conclusion argues against deterministic views of design. The emerging findings have design implications related to the creation of learning environments in online spaces, such as: (a) fully integrating videos within the broader instructional design of a course; (b) foregrounding the embedded context of instructional videos; and (c) accounting for the shifting times, places, and contexts in which viewers watch instructional videos. This dissertation is situated in the growing field of online education, in particular higher education, where significant money and resources are increasingly dedicated towards the development of online spaces while still much is unknown in relation to the design, experiences, and impact of these online learning environments.

The duties and responsibilities of the resource room teacher as perceived by elementary regular classroom teachers, resource room teachers and building principals

Summers, Dale Edward 03 June 2011 (has links)
The study was conducted to ascertain the extent and nature of differences of perceptions which exist between the elementary regular classroom teacher, elementary resource room teacher and building principal relating to the duties and responsibilities of the elementary resource room teacher.A questionnaire containing nineteen statements regarding the duties and responsibilities of the elementary resource room teacher was distributed to 40 building principals, 572 elementary regular classroom teachers and 21 elementary resource room teachers. hirty-four building principals, or 85 percent, completed the questionnaire and 370, or 64 percent of the elementary regular classroom teachers completed and returned the questionnaire. A total of twenty, or 95 percent, of the elementary resource room teachers also completed and returned the questionnaire. The results were analyzed by the chi-square test of independence at the .05 level of significance to test three null hypotheses in order to determine if perceptions of building principals, elementary regular classroom teachers and elementary resource room teachers were identical or different.A statistical difference in perceptions of the three groups was indicated with regard to elementary resource room teachers keeping the building principal informed of all aspects of the resource room program, including the referral process. The data also indicated a difference in perceptions among the three groups pertaining to the resource room teacher cooperatively implementing and coordinating with the elementary regular classroom teacher skill development tasks of the student which have been included in the individualized educational plan. A difference in perceptions between the three groups was also indicated with respect to the resource room teacher participating in case conferences and assisting in determination of criteria for placement of a child in special programs. Implementation of long term and short term goals for the mildly handicapped child cooperatively by the elementary regular class teacher and elementary resource room teacher was also perceived differently by the three groups as a duty of the elementary resource room teacher.Recommendations for Further Research1. A study should be conducted to determine whether the identified duties and responsibilities of the elementary resource room teacher are actually being performed.2. A study should be conducted to determine if the perceived duties and responsibilities of the elementary resource room teacherr have changed as the resource room concept has been utilized over a longer period of time.3. As the utilization of resource rooms increases in Indiana Public School Corporations, the study should be replicated, as a larger sample may add verification to the results.4. A study to determine whether years of professional experience of building principals, elementary regular classroom teachers and elementary resource room teachers can be identified as a factor regarding the perceptions of the duties and responsibilities of the elementary resource room teacher should be conducted.

Design and evaluation of taped instruction to teach environmental concepts on a nature trail

Ritter, Martha M. January 1984 (has links)
If students are to become aware of the vital, but fragile, interrelationships in their environment, they require many firsthand experiences in the out-of-doors. Environmental education is taught in some classrooms and nature centers, but to date, little research has been conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the instructional methods used. Nature center managers are finding it difficult to personally educate an increasing number of park visitors. School teachers who may lack expertise in the natural sciences need educational resources that can be used to supplement their science curricula. These situations indicate that there is a growing demand for environmental interpretive methods that are dynamic, convenient, and accessible to a large number of people. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a particular method of interpretation which involves the use of a taped message and hands-on activities along a nature trail. Middle school students took part in the project. The treatment for the experimental group consisted of taped instruction and nature trail activities. The control group toured Christy Woods Arboretum without a taped message. Both groups completed a short written questionnaire after theirexperience. Responses were analyzed to determine if the taped interpretive method was effective in helping students learn concepts and develop positive attitudes toward the natural environment. Teacher response was also evaluated.
