_____________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / Despite the abundance of lepidopteran species, there are few studies focusing on lepidopteran caterpillars, such as their biology, the interactions with their host plants and the effects of fire on their community structure in Cerrado. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of fire on foliar phenology of Byrsonima coccolobifolia Kunth (Malpighiaceae) and compare the frequencies, abundances and species composition of Lepidoptera larvae present in two areas of Cerrado sensu stricto disturbed by fire (nominated QI and QII) with a third area preserved for three decades from fire (P), in the RECOR. From December 2005 until August 2006, 900 plants of B. coccolobifolia were sampled at random in each area observed and the proportion of new leaves was registered along with the number of caterpillars found. The immatures collected were reared in the Ecology Laboratory of the Universidade de Brasilia. Leaf phenology of B. coccolobifolia differed significantly among areas, due to the larger proportion of plants with almost 50% of new leaves in the burnt areas. Area P showed the highest abundance (n=321), caterpillar richness (n=36) and frequency of plants with larvae (22.4%). The abundance in QI was 33% of Area P and richness 67%, while in QII abundance was 38% of area P and richness 40%. The dominant species were different in each area: Cerconota achatina (Elachistidae) in area P, Concana mundissima (Noctuidae) in area QI and Stenoma salome (Elachistidae) in area QII. The dissimilarity between P and the burnt areas was 63.94%. The results indicated leaf phenology alterations due to fire events and a negative impact on richness and abundance of caterpillars.

Studies to assess the main factors responsible for the dynamics of vegetation in the Amazon such as climate and / or deforestation suggest the possibility of the Amazon rainforest may not resist a potencial change in rainfall patterns, and be converted to an ecosystem of more sparse vegetation like savanna, which gave rise to the term “Amazon Savannization”. Some of these initial studies, however, used only future climate scenarios, neglecting in their majority the fire effects and especially the effect of nutrient limitation on vegetation dynamics. Recently, in the context of climate modeling, advancements have been made in an attempt to build models that incorporate the nutritional restriction effect and the fire to assess and measure their effects on vegetation at a large scale. In this work, the main objective was to evaluate the isolated and combined effects of climate (inter annual variability and CO2), fire (F) and nutritional limitation by phosphorus (P) using the dynamic vegetation model INLAND in the transition between forest-Cerrado. The INLAND model is the first Brazilian model to simulate the vegetation dynamics incorporating these factors. The INLAND characterizes the vegetation through plant functional types, which combined differently give rise to biomes. The nutritional limitation is established through a linear function of the total phosphorus content in the soil and the maximum carboxylation capacity of Rubisco enzyme (Vmax). The Rubisco is the main enzyme responsible for regulating carboxylation rates in plants with the C3 photosynthetic mechanism type acting directly on net primary productivity (NPP) and the increase of biomass. Two regional the datasets of Vmax to be used as input data of the simulations, based on regional (PR) (field measurements) and global data (PG) of total P content in the soil. In the design of numerical experiment, 24 simulations were performed for different combinations of climate factors, P, F and CO2 were obtained. To validate the simulations, regional datasets of dry season leaf area index (LAI), and biomass were compared against simulated values by the INLAND model. The results showed that isolation, the effect of fire on the NPP in the Cerrado is positive and higher than the effects of nutritional restriction, contrary to what happens in the Amazon biome where the P acts to reduce the NPP. The CO2 when evaluated in combination with the effects of fire acted as an attenuator increasing the NPP in the transition region. With respect to the climate, the use of inter-annual variability improved representation of biomass and LAI simulated by INLAND. The LAI and biomass simulated values showed good correlation with Amazon-Cerrado observed gradient. The best representation of the vegetation composition by INLAND was found when the effects of PG+F+CO2 were combined.

The deforestation of the Amazon, caused by farming and agribusiness activities in the northern state of Mato Grosso, has committed Transition Forests Amazon-Savanna, before the biodiversity of these areas is known by researchers. The fauna of small non-flying mammals is part of the little-known groups in the region, and may be suffering impacts of human activities, primarily effect of fire, used for cleaning of pastures and deforestation for the soybean plantations. This study characterized the diversity of small mammals not flying in an area of Amazon forest-savannah transition in the northern state of Mato Grosso and investigated the effect of fire and the effect of edge on this group of fauna. Two areas of 150 hectares were sampled, a preserved and another under impact of fire, with 183 traps of the type live-trap for three years in two season (dry and rainy seasons). The method used was the capture-mark-recapture. The sampling effort was 23,424-traps night. 390 individuals were captured with a successfully capture of 1.66%. A total of 11 species were caught, 6 rodents and 5 marsupials. Hylaeamys megacephalus was the most abundant species. The diversity of small mammals in the study area was more related to the Savanna than Amazon. In relation to fire, the species richness was not statistically different, but the abundance was significantly higher in transects located in an area without fire. Two distinct groups of transects were characteristic depending on the presence or absence of fire based on the composition of small mammals. The abundance of Hylaeamys megacephalus was significantly higher in transects that suffered no impact from fire. Regarding the effect of edge in Area 2, despite the richness of species was not significantly different, the abundance was significantly higher regarding distance from the border. Already in Area 1, nor richness nor abundance was statistically different regarding distance from the edge. This fact could be masked by both the direct and indirect effect of experimental fire on small mammals. When considered together fire and distance from the border, the relationship between them became clearer, since all transects sampled under effect of the fire had minor abundances. The population size of Hylaemys megacephalus was calculated over five seasons (dry and wet) in the area without influence of fire, and the rainy season of 2006 was statistically different peak and the other that growth can be explained by the “Alle effect”. There was no statistically significant differences in the structure of the community of small non-flying mammals between the dry and rainy seasons. This work contributed to the search of mammal knowledge at this region threatened by human pressures.
