Land reform in the Limpopo Province : a case study of the Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality / Harry Mantaneng PhaahlaPhaahla, Harry Mantaneng January 2011 (has links)
My interest in this research was to interview leaders and members of the three
communities within the Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality as well as officials of the
Regional Land Claims Commission (RLCC).
The purpose of the discussions was to find out how the communities involved
Government when lodging land claims. The three communities are, Bakwena Ba-
Kopa, Bakgaga Ba-Kopa and Masakaneng. The research yielded the following
findings: 1. All the three communities followed the correct procedures regarding the
relevant legislation and policies when they lodged their land claims. 2. Government played its role through the RLCC by assisting the communities in their endeavor to have their land restored. 3. In the interaction between Government and the communities challenges were encountered that at times led to the delay of the settlements. 4. When the communities keep patient during the land claim processes and
Government officials are dedicated to assist the communities, the chance of
positive outcomes is maximised.
There is evidence that Government made progress to ensure that the affected
communities have the dispossessed land restored. However, there is still a lot to be
done in addressing the outstanding issues. To handle these matters, as indicated
below, co-ordination and interaction between Government and the communities is
crucial.
One can point out these obstacles by focusing on the three affected communities
respectively. Masakaneng:
There is a need to tackle the challenge of the concerned group that led to the
emergence of another committee in the process. This delays the formal negotiations
with the municipality to help facilitate the delivery of the necessary services.
Bakwena Ba-Kopa:
The role-players missed the time-frames that were targeted for settlement.
Government will have to speed up the matter and finalise the settlement, seeing that
the beneficiaries have been waiting for many years.
Bakgaga Ba-Kopa:
Only portion one of RietKloof was restored to the community. The community is
eagerly awaiting Government to help facilitate the restoration of the remaining
portion. This community also needs to play its part in ensuring that the other sections
of the land are restored. It is important that they go back to the drawing board as
beneficiaries and tackle the prevailing differences so that they end up with a
unanimous stand on this matter.
To conclude: It is quite evident that the democratic government post-1994 is
committed and prepared to restore the dignity of the black people who were forcibly
removed from land they and their ancestors occupied. Government is assisting in
this matter by providing all the necessary resources to ensure that land restoration is
a success. For Government to succeed, the affected communities must also play
their role within the parameters of the relevant legislation. This is what the land Acts
expect of all the beneficiaries. / Thesis (M. Development and Management)--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2011

Symbolika labutě ve finské poezii od lidové slovesnosti k symbolizmu / Swan Symbolism in Finnish Poetry from Oral Tradition to Symbolist MovementŠvec, Michal January 2012 (has links)
ENGLISH SUMMARY This master thesis focuses on swan symbolism in Finnish poetry, from the oldest folk poems of oral tradition to the first decades of the 20th century. Firstly a swan is described from the zoological and etymological point of view, and its position in the contemporary Finnish culture is clarified. The next chapter is dedicated to swan symbolism in European culture, from antiquity till presence, and it focuses on mythology, folk traditions and the most common motives in visual art, music and literature. The key part of the thesis describes the swan symbolism in Finnish oral tradition and especially in poetry of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. The thesis focuses in particular on Johan Ludvig Runeberg's, Aleksis Kivi's, Elias Lönnrot's, Juhani Aho's, Eino Leino's, Otto Manninen's and Aarni Kouta's poetry. A special chapter is devoted to the myth of the Swan of Tuonela. Following the swan symbolism throughout literature and culture history, I have been looking for connections to Finnish national as well as European traditions and intertextual relations.

The subject of this thesis is the transformation of the perception of the stranger in modem social theory during the 20th century. Current approaches about the stranger show that social exclusion, prejudice and intolerance are the main challenges for strangers in our contemporary world. By mapping approaches of authors like Georg Simmel, Alfred Schütz, Norbert Elias e Zygmunt Bauman the differences of the perception of the stranger could be demonstrated, reaching from approaches at the outset of the 20th century, in which the stranger occupied a place clearly separated from society, to approaches at the end of the 20th century, which recognize a certain generalisation of the condition of the stranger in our globalised world. Simultaneously, it could be observed that claims regarding the place of strangers in society have been more and more shifted from the question of equality of rights to the question of recognition and valuation of differences in an increasingly multicultural society / Mestrado / Mestre em Ciências Sociais

CRIME FICTION AS A LENS FOR POLITICAL AND SOCIAL CRITIQUE IN THE MODERN ARAB WORLD: ELIAS KHOURY’S WHITE MASKS AND YASMINA KHADRA’S MORITURIRachel Hannah Hackett (10682463) 07 May 2021 (has links)

This thesis
argues that Morituri by Yasmina Khadra and White Masks by Elias
Khoury use the genre of the detective novel as a pretext for social and
political critique of Algeria and Lebanon respectively. This thesis links the generic (crime
fiction) and the conceptual (Political and Social Critique in Modern Arab
World). While the
detective novel is traditionally thought of as a non-academic, entertaining
part of popular culture, the use of the genre to critique the failure of nation
building after colonization elevates the genre and transforms it from mere
entertainment to a more serious genre. Both novels are emblematic of a shift in
the use of the detective and crime novel to address the political disarray in
their respective states and the Arab world as a whole. As modern examples of
detective novels in the modern Arab world, Morituri and White Masks
transform the genre through their complex interweaving of aspects of the
popular genre of detective fiction with the more serious political novel. The
historical and political context of both countries at the time of the novels’
settings are an intrinsic part of understanding the crimes and the obfuscation
of the perpetrator. In both of these novels, the technical and generic aspects
are connected to the thematic, and the detective novel structure is not just
there for suspense and entertainment. Instead, this structure points to the
neocolonial system, benefitting the most powerful and the most affluent at the
expense of the weak, poor, and disadvantaged.

Kopf und Schädel : Methoden des Wahnsinns in Canettis roman "Die Blendung" / Brain and brawn methods of madness in Canetti's novel "Die Blendung"Riezky, Günther Helmut Dieter 11 1900 (has links)
Text in German / Many treatises and disquisitions concerning "Die Blendung"
concentrate on the main character, Peter Kien, as well as
on other protagonists. In contrast, this dissertation deals
with Pfaff, the primitive force and his influence on Peter
Kien, the "Brain", the masterspirit.
Common traits of these di verse characters are highlighted
and it is explained why Pfaff, the brute, manages to exult
over Kien, the intellectual. Their interactions and their
interdependence are dealt with and it is shown that
insanity which is prevalent in both protagonists prepares
the way to Kien's doom whereas it leads to Pfaff's
survival.
seinen Wahnsinn gesichert wird / Linguistics and Modern Languages / M. A. (German)
