The development and assessment of a family resilience-enhancement programme

Thesis (DPhil (Psychology))--University of Stelenbosch, 2010. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A probe into resilience research has revealed that psychologists have taken on the role of “keepers of the crypt”, where our attained knowledge has been “entombed” by virtue of our reluctance to allow it to bear practical fruition. Consequently, the impetus of the research is a response to the aforementioned gap and is explicated in four phases: Phase 1: A detailed literature review consisting of the review and integration of appropriate preceding resilience research, thereby serving as a possible reference guide for future studies; Phase 2: Provision of a succinct, comprehensive framework for programme development within the field of psychology; Phase 3: Family hardiness was selected as the resilience quality to be attended to via the development of a universal, multidimensional resilience-enhancement programme; Phase 4: An assessment of whether the resilience-enhancement programme is successful in developing the selected resilience quality in families. Following the salutogenic approach, the main theoretical foundation of the investigation resides in the Resiliency Model of Stress, Adjustment and Adaptation (McCubbin & Thompson, 1991). The significant contribution of the research is its provision of a framework for programme development within the field of psychology. Self-report questionnaires and open-ended questions were completed by mothers as representatives of their families. Therefore, the research amalgamated both qualitative and quantitative measures in its quasi-experimental, pretest-posttest natural control-group research design. A total of fifty families living in the Western Cape, South Africa participated in the research. The statistical trends observed in the study hinted at the enhancement potential of family hardiness. It became evident that gender, level of education, income and occupation, emotional intelligence and the time frame of interventions affected the enhancement potential of family hardiness. Age may also play a role, but the conflicting research results render conclusions about the correlation between age and hardiness questionable. Comparative studies would clarify this aspect. Future studies attempting to develop these findings further, need to consider the influence of factors such as gender, level of education, income and occupation, emotional intelligence and the time frame of interventions. Family hardiness is but one of the identified resilience qualities. An exploration of the enhancement potential of other identified resilience qualities will provide a plethora of interventions for service providers to choose from, enabling them to meet families and communities at their point of need. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Nadere ondersoek van veerkragtigheidsnavorsing het aangedui dat sielkundiges die rol van “bewaarders” aangeneem het, waar ons versamelde kennis verberg word as gevolg van ons onwilligheid om dit prakties toe te pas. Die navorsing het dus van beide kwalitatiewe en kwantitatiewe metings gebruik gemaak in die kwasi-eksperimentele voortoets-natoets, natuurlike kontrolegroep navorsingsontwerp. ’n Totaal van vyftig families wat in die Wes-Kaap van Suid Afrika woonagtig is, het aan die navorsing deelgeneem. Die statistiese neigings wat in die navorsing waargeneem is, sinspeel op die verrykingspotensiaal van gesinsgehardheid. Dit het aan die lig gekom dat geslag, opvoedkundige vlak, inkomste en beroep, emosionele intelligensie en die tydsduur van intervensies die verrykingspotensiaal van gesinsgehardheid beïnvloed. Ouderdom kan ook ‘n invloed hê, maar die teenstrydige navorsingsresultate in dié verband maak gevolgtrekkings oor die korrelasie tussen ouderdom en gesinsgehardheid twyfelagtig. Vergelykende studies sal die bogenoemde kan uitklaar. Toekomstige studies wat poog om die bevindinge van hierdie navorsing verder te ontwikkel, moet die invloed van faktore soos geslag, opvoedkundige vlak, inkomste en beroep, emosionele intelligensie en die tydsduur van intervensies in ag neem. Gesinsgehardheid is maar een geïdentifiseerde veerkragtigheidsfaktor. Verdere ondersoeke na die verrykingspotensiaal van ander veerkragtigheidsfaktore sal ‘n oorvloed van intervensies aan diensleweraars beskikbaar stel, ten einde in die behoeftes van families en gemeenskappe te voorsien.

Moral enhancement and moral disagreement

At first glance, the project of moral enhancement (making people more moral) may appear uncontroversial and obviously worth supporting; surely it is a good idea to make people better. However, as the recent literature on moral enhancement demonstrates, the situation is not so simple – there is significant disagreement over the content of moral norms as well as appropriate means by which to manipulate them. This disagreement seriously threatens many proposals to improve society via moral enhancement. In my dissertation, I develop an understanding of how, exactly, disagreement poses problems for moral enhancement. However, I also argue that there is a way forward. It is possible to bring about moral improvement without commitment to particular and controversial moral norms, but instead relying on relatively uncontroversial ideas concerning morally reliable processes. The upshot is that, while attempting to directly manipulate people’s moral ideas is objectionable, it is relatively unproblematic to focus on helping people reason better and avoid akrasia, with the justified expectation that this will generally lead to moral improvement. We should, therefore, focus not on how to bring people in line with what we take to be the right ideas, motives or behaviors. Rather, we should look to helping people determine for themselves what being moral consists in, as well as help ensure that they act on those judgments. Traditional, non-moral education, it turns out, is actually one of the best moral enhancers we have. In fact, the tools of philosophy (which is, in many aspects, concerned with proper reasoning) are central to the project of indirect moral enhancement. Ultimately, one of the best ways to make people morally better may well be to make them better philosophers.

Image detection and retrieval for biometric security from an image enhancement perspective

Security methods based on biometrics have been gaining importance increasingly in the last few years due to recent advances in biometrics technology and its reliability and efficiency in real world applications. Also, several major security disasters that occurred in the last decade have given a new momentum to this research area. The successful development of biometric security applications cannot only minimise such threats but may also help in preventing them from happening on a global scale. Biometric security methods take into account humans’ unique physical or behavioural traits that help to identify them based on their intrinsic characteristics. However, there are a number of issues related to biometric security, in particular with regard to surveillance images. The first issue is related to the poor visibility of the images produced by surveillance cameras and the second issue is concerned with the effective image retrieval based on user query. This research addresses both issues. This research addresses the first issue of low quality of surveillance images by proposing an integrated image enhancement approach for face detection. The proposed approach is based on contrast enhancement and colour balancing methods. The contrast enhancement method is used to improve the contrast, while the colour balancing method helps to achieve a balanced colour. Importantly, in the colour balancing method, a new process for colour cast adjustment is introduced which relies on statistical calculation. It can adjust the colour cast and maintain the luminance of the whole image at the same level. The research addresses the second issue relating to image retrieval by proposing a content-based image retrieval approach. The approach is based on the three welliii known algorithms: colour histogram, texture and moment invariants. Colour histogram is used to extract the colour features of an image. Gabor filter is used to extract the texture features and the moment invariant is used to extract the shape features of an image. The use of these three algorithms ensures that the proposed image retrieval approach produces results which are highly relevant to the content of an image query, by taking into account the three distinct features of the image and the similarity metrics based on Euclidean measure. In order to retrieve the most relevant images the proposed approach also employs a set of fuzzy heuristics to improve the quality of the results further. The integrated image enhancement approach is applied to the enhancement of low quality images produced by surveillance cameras. The performance of the proposed approach is evaluated by applying three face detection methods (skin colour based face detection, feature based face detection and image based face detection methods) to surveillance images before and after enhancement using the proposed approach. The results show a significant improvement in face detection when the proposed approach was applied. The performance of the content-based image retrieval approach is carried out using the standard Precision and Recall measures, and the results are compared with wellknown existing approaches. The results show the proposed approach perform s better than the well-known existing approaches.

The ethics of stimulant use in healthy students

Progress in scientific developments and especially in the field of medical science has allowed for previously unthinkable advances to be employed in the endeavours to improve human functioning in its various forms. Whereas in the past, enhancement has been focused on aspects such as prolonging life, improving the immune system or cosmetic enhancements, cognitive enhancement is receiving substantial attention at the moment. Recent reports have commented on the use of stimulants such as methylphenidate, especially amongst students at tertiary institutions with the aim of enhancing cognitive abilities. This raises various concerns, ranging from safety issues and the risk of drug abuse to the moral issues relating to enhancement in the broader context. Enhancement therapies are easily justified where the required enhancement is needed to improve functioning where a specific deficit is present or where such enhancement could prevent illness. But where no illness or disorder is present, these issues cause marked ambivalence amongst medical practitioners. The legal restrictions placed on the access to stimulants require the participation of a doctor as these drugs may not be sold across the counter and a prescription is needed to acquire them. The doctor is then put in the position where a request is made for medication where illness or a disorder is not present. Medical paternalism could easily dictate that the decision does lie with the doctor because of statutory rules, but this would be at the risk of ignoring the possible rights of students to enhance. This thesis examines the concerns mentioned related to safety risks as well as the abuse potential of methylphenidate. Although there are precautions that need to be taken into account when prescribing methylphenidate, this is not sufficient to warrant a blanket refusal by medical practitioners to prescribe it to healthy students. The arguments used to debate both the promotion of enhancement therapies as well as the reasons for restricting and possibly even preventing any use thereof, are discussed. There are various reasons why enhancement may be needed in current and future society and to ignore these would raise moral issues in itself. There are various arguments used to disapprove of enhancement, but this thesis concludes that although the concerns raised should be considered on an ongoing basis, as enhancement is an ongoing process, enhancement should be allowed to continue to be explored and employed where appropriate. Finally, potential guidelines for the individual and also for tertiary institutions relating to enhancement, especially relating to cognitive enhancement with stimulants such as methylphenidate, are proposed. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die soeke na verbetering is reeds vir duisende jare deel van die menslike kultuur. Vordering in wetenskaplike ontwikkelings en veral op die gebied van die mediese wetenskap het toegelaat dat voorheen ondenkbare vooruitgang toegepas kan word in die pogings om menslike funksionering in sy verskillende vorme te verbeter. In die verlede het verbeteringstegnieke merendeels gefokus op aspekte soos verlenging van lewe, die verbetering van die immuunstelsel of kosmetiese verbeterings, maar tans geniet kognitiewe verbetering aansienlike aandag. Onlangse verslae lewer veral kommentaar oor die gebruik van stimulante soos metielfenidaat, veral onder studente by tersiêre instellings, met die doel om die verbetering van kognitiewe vermoëns teweeg te bring. Methods for Objective and Subjective Video Quality Assessment and for Speech Enhancement

The overwhelming trend of the usage of multimedia services has raised the consumers' awareness about quality. Both service providers and consumers are interested in the delivered level of perceptual quality. The perceptual quality of an original video signal can get degraded due to compression and due to its transmission over a lossy network. Video quality assessment (VQA) has to be performed in order to gauge the level of video quality. Generally, it can be performed by following subjective methods, where a panel of humans judges the quality of video, or by using objective methods, where a computational model yields an estimate of the quality. Objective methods and specifically No-Reference (NR) or Reduced-Reference (RR) methods are preferable because they are practical for implementation in real-time scenarios. This doctoral thesis begins with a review of existing approaches proposed in the area of NR image and video quality assessment. In the review, recently proposed methods of visual quality assessment are classified into three categories. This is followed by the chapters related to the description of studies on the development of NR and RR methods as well as on conducting subjective experiments of VQA. In the case of NR methods, the required features are extracted from the coded bitstream of a video, and in the case of RR methods additional pixel-based information is used. Specifically, NR methods are developed with the help of suitable techniques of regression using artificial neural networks and least-squares support vector machines. Subsequently, in a later study, linear regression techniques are used to elaborate the interpretability of NR and RR models with respect to the selection of perceptually significant features. The presented studies on subjective experiments are performed using laboratory based and crowdsourcing platforms. In the laboratory based experiments, the focus has been on using standardized methods in order to generate datasets that can be used to validate objective methods of VQA. The subjective experiments performed through crowdsourcing relate to the investigation of non-standard methods in order to determine perceptual preference of various adaptation scenarios in the context of adaptive streaming of high-definition videos. Lastly, the use of adaptive gain equalizer in the modulation frequency domain for speech enhancement has been examined. To this end, two methods of demodulating speech signals namely spectral center of gravity carrier estimation and convex optimization have been studied.

Process of Motivational Enhancement Therapy: Relationships between Therapist and Client Behaviours, and Alcohol Use Outcome

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based, directive, client-centered therapy designed to develop discrepancy and resolve ambivalence by eliciting and reinforcing client Change Talk. However, the exact link between the process engaged in during MI and outcome is only starting to be uncovered. The present thesis has replicated and expanded on the current knowledge of the relationship between Therapist and Client Behaviours during a MI-based intervention (Motivational Enhancement Therapy; MET) and outcome, and has provided support for the emergent theory of the inner workings of MI. This was achieved by coding 106 audiotaped MET sessions primarily by the methods outlined in the Motivational Interviewing Skill Code Version 2.0. Data was drawn from 28 participants who received 3-4 sessions of MET within the context of a randomised controlled trial for mild-moderate alcohol dependence at the Community Alcohol and Drug Service of Christchurch. Therapist and Client Behaviours were analysed within sessions (categorised into Early, Mid, or End Intervals) and across sessions, and compared with whether the client had drank within national drinking guidelines during the 6-months after MET (Controlled Drinkers). In terms of Client Behaviours during MET it was found that Uncontrolled Drinkers (compared with Controlled Drinkers) uttered a significantly higher frequency of Sustain Talk, lower Ability Language strength (over all MET and during End Intervals), and lower Commitment Language strength (during Session 2 and 4, and change over MET). Giving Information was the only Therapist Behaviour where significant differences were observed over all MET, with a higher frequency given to the Uncontrolled Drinkers. However, during End Intervals within MET Sessions, Controlled Drinkers received a significantly higher frequency of Advise without Permission and a lower frequency of Emphasise Control statements. In most instances MI-Consistent Therapist Behaviours were associated with higher strength of Ability and Commitment Language, and a lower frequency of Sustain Talk. MI-Inconsistent Therapist Behaviour, Direct, was associated with lower Client Language strength. Limitations to these results include small sample, limited ability to make inferences about causality, coder biases, and uneven reliability. However, this exploratory study was unique in investigating the relationship between Therapist Behaviours and the strength of Client Language, and in examining these factors within and across multiple sessions, and has produced a number of potentially valuable findings that warrant further investigation.

Generation of VUV frequency combs in femtosecond enhancement cavity

This dissertation is on the development of a laser system for the generation of femtosecond frequency combs in the vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) via intracavity high-harmonic generation (HHG). The HHG process yields coherent vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) light resulting from the ionization of noble gases driven by intense near-IR femtosecond frequency combs in an optical enhancement cavity. An injection locked amplification cavity (fsAC) was developed in order to generate a high power femtosecond frequency combs based on a Ti:Sapphire oscillator. Detailed amplifier performance was investigated in order to evaluate the coherence of the pulse amplification process. A passive power enhancement cavity for fs pulses (fsEC) was designed for intracavity high harmonic generation. For maximum power enhancement and conversion efficiency, the intracavity dispersion was compensated and various design layouts tested. A careful analysis of the phase matching conditions was performed, taking into account the effect of reabsorption of the generated high harmonic light, to compare different cavity geometries and determine which would produce the most efficient harmonic yield. Numerical simulations were also performed to determine the level of intra-cavity ionization that could be sustained before disrupting the pulse enhancement process. Based on the results of these simulations and calculations, it was determined that for a xenon gas target, a moderate peak intensity of the order of ~ 5×10¹³W/cm² produces harmonics most efficiently.

Investigating the use of protein-targeted pegylated gold nanoparticle probes in the surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy of cells

Currently, it is very challenging to accurately monitor the response of patients to radiation therapy over the course of treatment. The initial response to ionizing radiation occurs in the cells at a molecular level, and effects of the response are not typically noticeable on short time scales. Surface-enhanced Raman Spectroscopy, or SERS, has proven to be a useful technique in the analysis of tissues and cells at a molecular level. Specifically, the use of targeted SERS probes allows for the detection of specific proteins on the cell membrane. The work presented here looks to assess the feasibility of using targeted SERS probes and two-dimensional SERS microscopy to measure the response of tumour cells to ionizing radiation, by identifying changes in the distribution of membrane proteins following exposure to clinically relevant doses of ionizing radiation (≤ 60Gy). Two different types of targeted SERS probes were investigated, based on the work of Grubisha et al. ([1]; Type I) and Qian et al. ([2]; Type II), both containing a gold nanoparticle core. In a simplified cellular experiment, biotin on the surface of biotinylated OVCAR5 cells was targeted with streptavidin-SERS probes, and the Type-II SERS probes showed the most promising results. However, SERS maps still provided less characteristic spectral signal than expected, and challenges remain in the development of a reproducible cellular imaging technique. Despite difficulties in cellular imaging, the functionality of the Type-II SERS probes was verified separately, using gold slides with a biotin monolayer in place of cells. Following verification, the SERS intensities provided by differently sized clusters of the SERS probes were characterized. To begin, both SERS maps and scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of gold slides were acquired after incubation with Type-II SERS probes for multiple times (1hr, 2hr, 3hr, 12hr). Data analysis of the SEM images provided a measure of the physical distribution of the SERS probes on the surface of the slide, while analysis of the SERS maps provided information about the spectral distribution of the probes. By relating the information provided by the SEM images and SERS maps, a simple polynomial relationship between SERS intensity and the number of clustered SERS probes providing the enhancement was determined, providing a framework for quantifiable SERS imaging. Finally, an independent experiment was devised to ensure that exposure to clinically relevant doses of ionizing radiation would affect the ability of the targeted protein to bind to SERS probes, thus leading to measurable differences in SERS maps of irradiated and unirradiated cells. A series of experiments utilizing the enzyme-linked immunosorbant assay (ELISA) was performed to test the effect of ionizing radiation-induced damage on the ability of streptavidin to bind to biotin, and the results confirmed that a noticeable reduction in binding could be detected at doses as low as 10 Gy. The results of this work demonstrate that following the development of a suitable cell/SERS probe incubation technique, Type-II SERS probes would be appropriate for use in quantifiable SERS imaging. Also, it is suggested that a measurable change in protein function will be present when comparing SERS maps of control cells to those of cells irradiated to clinically relevant doses. / Graduate

Contrast enhancement in digital imaging using histogram equalization

Nowadays devices are able to capture and process images from complex surveillance monitoring systems or from simple mobile phones. In certain applications, the time necessary to process the image is not as important as the quality of the processed images (e.g., medical imaging), but in other cases the quality can be sacrificed in favour of time. This thesis focuses on the latter case, and proposes two methodologies for fast image contrast enhancement methods. The proposed methods are based on histogram equalization (HE), and some for handling gray-level images and others for handling color images As far as HE methods for gray-level images are concerned, current methods tend to change the mean brightness of the image to the middle level of the gray-level range. This is not desirable in the case of image contrast enhancement for consumer electronics products, where preserving the input brightness of the image is required to avoid the generation of non-existing artifacts in the output image. To overcome this drawback, Bi-histogram equalization methods for both preserving the brightness and contrast enhancement have been proposed. Although these methods preserve the input brightness on the output image with a significant contrast enhancement, they may produce images which do not look as natural as the ones which have been input. In order to overcome this drawback, we propose a technique called Multi-HE, which consists of decomposing the input image into several sub-images, and then applying the classical HE process to each one of them. This methodology performs a less intensive image contrast enhancement, in a way that the output image presented looks more natural. We propose two discrepancy functions for image decomposition which lead to two new Multi-HE methods. A cost function is also used for automatically deciding in how many sub-images the input image will be decomposed on. Experimental results show that our methods are better in preserving the brightness and producing more natural looking images than the other HE methods. In order to deal with contrast enhancement in color images, we introduce a generic fast hue-preserving histogram equalization method based on the RGB color space, and two instances of the proposed generic method. The first instance uses R-red, G-green, and Bblue 1D histograms to estimate a RGB 3D histogram to be equalized, whereas the second instance uses RG, RB, and GB 2D histograms. Histogram equalization is performed using 7 Abstract 8 shift hue-preserving transformations, avoiding the appearance of unrealistic colors. Our methods have linear time and space complexities with respect to the image dimension, and do not require conversions between color spaces in order to perform image contrast enhancement. Objective assessments comparing our methods and others are performed using a contrast measure and color image quality measures, where the quality is established as a weighed function of the naturalness and colorfulness indexes. This is the first work to evaluate histogram equalization methods with a well-known database of 300 images (one dataset from the University of Berkeley) by using measures such as naturalness and colorfulness. Experimental results show that the value of the image contrast produced by our methods is in average 50% greater than the original image value, and still keeping the quality of the output images close to the original

The application of respiratory muscle training to competitive rowing

Respiratory muscle training (RMT) has been shown to improve exercise tolerance during a wide range of exercise modalities and durations of activity (McConnell & Romer, 2004b). However, there is a limited amount of research characterising the influence of RMT in specific athletic populations, or examining any sport-specific factors that may influence the benefits of RMT. Hence, the purpose of this dissertation was to evaluate the application of RMT in competitive rowers and to explore methods of optimising this to rowing. Results: Inspiratory muscle training (IMT) increased inspiratory muscle strength (~20-29%; p < 0.05) and attenuated inspiratory muscle fatigue (~8-28%; p < 0.05) during time trial performance in club-level and elite rowers. However, only in the club-level oarsmen was IMT associated with a measurable improvement in rowing performance (2.7% increase in mean power; p < 0.05). Expiratory muscle training (EMT) provided no ergogenic effect, and concurrent EMT and IMT did not enhance performance above that seen with IMT alone. IMT loads performed at 60-70% of maximal inspiratory mouth pressure (PImax) were equivalent to the widely used 30 repetition maximum, which is higher than reported for non-rowers (Caine & McConnell, 1998a); further, a load of 60% PImax was sufficient to activate the inspiratory muscle metaboreflex, as evidenced by a time-dependent rise in heart rate (70.1 ± 13.2 to 98.0 ± 22.8 bpm; p < 0.05) and mean arterial blood pressure (92.4 ± 8.5 to 99.7 ± 10.1 mmHg; p < 0.05). Higher and lower inspiratory loads did not activate the metaboreflex. Assessments of flow, pressure and volume in rowing relevant postures revealed no significant impairments, but optimal function occurred in the most upright postures. Conclusions: These data support the application of IMT, but not EMT, in elite and sub-elite rowers, and suggest that a load of 60-70% of PImax provides metaboreflex activation during loading. Further, the data do not support a requirement to undertake IMT in rowing relevant postures.
