The Critical-Historical Pedagogy establishes some premises that stand as a starting point for the study presented here, among them: the relation between education and the formation / transformation of the worldview of students and teachers is one of the central concerns of that pedagogical theory; the role of scientific knowledge is more consistently effective the more teaching approaches a materialist, historical, and dialectical worldview; teaching school content is to teach worldviews conveyed by them. The present study is based on Critical-Historical Pedagogy, Cultural-Historical Psychology and the Philosophy of Biology and aims to clarify the relation between school education and the formation of the worldview, through the mediation of the school content "evolution". We take as unit of analysis the pedagogical work and sought to examine the main elements of the theory of evolution as contributions to the formation, through school education, of an objective conception of nature; as well as to elucidate the relations between the construction of an objective conception of nature and the elaboration of a scientific-philosophical worldview, in order to point out the developmental potential of Biology teaching for its construction. The first chapter was intended to clarify the origins of the worldview and the unit of analysis of this research (both based on the human work). In the second chapter three different dimensions of the worldview (philosophical-scientific, psychological and pedagogical) were analyzed and the relations between them were established. The third chapter presented a history of the scientific method and Biology itself, with the purpose of highlighting the relations between the biological thought that institutes the conception of nature and the formation of the worldview; as well as to characterize the teleological and essentialist conception of nature that had been predominant until the nineteenth century and is, today, already surpassed. This allowed us to consider that the teaching of Biology based on essentialist, teleological and metaphysical conceptions of nature is not identified with the teaching of the most developed scientific thinking to date (which contradicts principles of Critical-Historical Pedagogy). The fourth and final chapter was intended to explain why the evolutionary worldview is considered revolutionary and to analyze the materialistic, historical, and dialectical foundations of some of the major conceptual systems of current evolutionary thinking as school contents. Among them, organism, biological population, species, ancestry / descent with modifications, natural selection, adaptation, teleonomy. The course adopted allowed us to defend the thesis that the teaching and appropriation of evolution‟s fundamental principles can contribute to build the bases of the materialist, historical and dialectical conception of nature and worldview

Charles Darwin (1809-1882) e os peixes elétricos: história e natureza da ciência no ensino de ciências na Educação de Jovens  e Adultos / Charles Darwin (1809-1882) and eletric fish: history and nature of science in Youth and Adults Education

Jensen, Gerda Maisa 22 August 2016 (has links)
This thesis, History of Biology and Education part of the research line, was designed to introduce Science History episodes in elementary school science classes, mainly in Youth and Adult Education (YAE). The historical approach had two objectives in science teaching: promoting understanding of current scientific concepts related to the evolutionary theory of living beings and develop a perception on the characteristics of science and scientific inquiry. The first part of the thesis discusses the historical research and specially the episode in selected science history in which the same biological material - electric fish - were studied by different naturalists of the seventeenth to the nineteenth century. The interest was to know the main explanations for the phenomenon, first considered in a corpuscular and mechanical level, and then in an electric one, taken in the nineteenth century, in the context of evolutionary theory. The historical study was focused on the fact that the electric organs of fish belonging to different taxonomic groups were considered by Charles Robert Darwin (1809-1882) as a special difficulty for the principle of natural selection. This study indicated the approach adopted by English naturalist and compared it to the current scientific knowledge since this original historical study was devoted to the learning of a set of concepts related to the natural selection principle. The historical study followed the methodology research in history of science, through analysis of primary sources, in the light of secondary sources. The second part of the thesis is an empirical research that discusses the introduction of history of science in science education. The introduction of historical study in science education to adult education students was through planning, validation, implementation and evaluation of a Teaching Learning Sequence (TLS). The construction and validation of the TLS followed the parameters established by Méheut and Psillos (2004). The empirical research has been done according to the action-research methodology; the teacher-researcher, and YAE students in a public school, São Paulo. The triangulation of data was made from photographs, audiovisual recordings of classes, many student records along the teaching learning sequence, including answers to previous questionnaire (pre-test) and after (post-test) to the instructional sequence, semi-structured interviews, structured interviews and the teacher-researcher notes. The analysis of the following qualitative data, followed a methodology researched in the science education based on the authors Bogdan and Biklen (2014) and content analysis based on Bardin (1994). The main results of empirical research on the historical approach of science in science/biology education at the Youth and Adult Education are the increasing in the number of students with more informed perceptions about science and understanding the principle of natural selection to explain the origin of species - a current scientific content, considered complex and far from students\' daily lives

Though the teaching of how life originated and diversified are the object of researches already developed and published in the last decades, some difficulties still remain in teaching these subjects. Taking these considerations into account, the present research is characterized as State of Art and it aims to highlight what is being produced in academic researches, in the form of dissertations and theses, from 2006 to 2016, regarding the teaching of the themes Origin of Life and Biological Evolution. A total of 78 articles were found, being 65 (83%) dissertations and 16 (17%) theses. 86% of these are from Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) of public administrative nature, with emphasis on state and federal universities, and 13% of private HEIs. Around 80% of dissertations and thesis are concentrated in the South-Southeast region. Half of the papers are dissertations on teaching Biological Evolution, and only one thesis investigates the teaching of the Origin of Life. Around 70% of the academic productions identified are intended for research at the secondary level on basic education. The continuing formation of teachers contemplates only 4% of the productions. In relation to the most prevalent issues in the set of dissertations and theses, stand out: Characteristic of Teacher, with 25%, followed by Didactic Resources and Method-Contents with almost 16% each, and History and Philosophy of Science, with 14%. We found three issues that were not well investigated in the researches: Curriculum and Programs, Non-Formal Education and School Organization, which appears as a research field little explored and that requires an investigation on the teaching and learning process of the Origin and Evolution of Life. These results, as well as the researches focused on the analysis of academic production, can contribute to the deployment of more specific proposals of teaching formation and improvements in the teaching-learning of the Origin of Life and Biological Evolution.
